  1. IIRC Ted Williams has been quoted as saying that he'd give up some of those personal awards for a World Series Championship.
  2. Guaranteed money and sometimes a chance at a ring can be a big incentive. Once he opts out of that contract he's naked out there, hoping he can get a better one. That list of prospective employers who can pay him more and give him a shot at a ring is quite small.
  3. It's a sucky position to be in. Do you swing at a pitch that you know is a ball but might be called a strike because the last one was? Or do you hope the ump will get this one right? And you know that even if you make contact the best you're going to get is a weak dribbler to the infleld. Those allegedly insignificant bad calls by the ump on balls and strikes can have a huge impact on an AB and a game. I don't want to see robo-umps but I DO want to see the quality of umpiring improve. Unfortunately unless MLB does something to "incentivlse" the umpires things aren't going to change. Ignoring the bad calls isn't the answer
  4. Bogaerts, Beni & Hanley for Stanton IF Stanton will drop his opt-out. Then Butterfield and Stanton take a stroll to 1b where Butter said, "i hope you like it here. You;re going to be viewing the field from this spot in the future".
  5. Thank Machado.
  6. My position was and continues to be that neither viewpoint is completely right nor completely wrong. I believe in the statistics to a point but I also believe that one cannot rule out "the human element", and when you acknowledge the human element what are you acknowledging is the emotional ability to 'turn it up'. I've played on several teams that were pretty ordinary until something happened to ignite the team. When that happened we became pretty darn good and when it didn't happen we lost. Sometimes all a team needs is that spark. That spark can be a fielder making a great play, a couple of "random" hits or, in the case of what David Ortiz did, a fired-up dugout speech. The results of those things is the 'human element" we speak of. I fail to see how anyone could have watched yesterday's game and can believe that the six run 7th inning was all the result of randomness.
  7. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE who follows baseball knows deep inside that players can 'turn it up', they know that 'hitting is contagious' and that there's such a thing as momentum. Then they read 'studies' done by other people and suddenly they're conflicted. Who do they believe? Do they believe the number crunchers who 'prove' that everything they have learned was wrong or do their believe their own lyin' eyes? http://www.businessinsider.com/why-most-published-scientific-research-is-wrong-2013-10
  8. Devers looks better at 3B because overall he's an improvement over what was there, but only on the offensive side of the ball. This team cannot have a player at 3B next year who's making wholesale errors. The idea of moving Devers to 1B and acquiring a real defensive 3B is beginning to gain some traction with me.
  9. Yup. There goes his credibility! LOL
  10. I saw no posts from anyone advocating taking Price out. I made the suggestion (order? LOL) for Farrell to have someone up in the bullpen during that 4th inning in case it was needed. Remember, we were nursing a one run lead at that time. Maybe there was a misunderstanding of what my intent was.
  11. I'm not going to engage with you because all you want to do is be a jerk. Have (yet another) very nice day.
  12. The Butler did it, in the end zone, with a pick.
  13. As I said in the GT, Mookie makes that play.
  14. Let me put it this way.... I'm now ready to give him another appearance, whereas if he'd gotten the snot kicked out of him today I wouldn't have been.
  15. Yes. Clearly was on replay. The only thing I'm unsure about is whether the ball would have come down on the field of play had Reddick not touched it. He may have actually pushed it into the stands.
  16. All we needed was for the Sox to get Sandoval back an have him come through too.
  17. Now if the Guardians can come through tonight the Sox will at least have lasted longer than the Yankees!! I take my blessings where I can find them. LOL
  18. Do you mean like not having the ball clank off his glove for a home run?
  19. I agree. It is. But to put the best possible spin on it we also have to win Game 5 to advance and he'll be able to pitch a few innings then.
  20. Is Reed that good, or have the Astros given up on this game?
  21. ERod would be the guy for me. It's going to be All Hands On Deck whomever it is.
  22. You know what? Mookie makes that play.
  23. OMG. Off Reddick's glove!!
