  1. Is whether a team wins the WS going to be the criteria now for whether it's worthwhile to have a shut-down closer? Unfortunately we don't know who's going to win the WS until it's over but that shut-down closer can give a team a better opportunity to win the WS than a team who doesn't have one. For example, the Sox made the playoffs last year with Kimbrel's 35 saves. If we had a closer who only had half that many the Sox would have missed the playoffs completely and therefore had no chance at winning the WS. Not to mention that if the Sox closer only saved 18 games the closer and everyone in the FO would have been lynched.
  2. Small sample size. :-) There's no right way to win the WS or even qualify for the playoffs. If there were everyone would be doing it. However, Kimbrel had 35 saves last year and the Sox finished two games ahead of the Yankees. Obviously there's no way to prove what would have happened had we spent Kimbrel's money elsewhere but what we do know is that had Kimbrel had three fewer saves we wouldn't have won the division. I like that as "knowledge" that he's extremely valuable to the Red Sox and worth re-signing.
  3. This is the entire story with closers. With playoff spots decided by a game or three a few losses that could have been turned into W's with a really good closer (maybe named Kimbrel) is the difference between playing baseball or golf in October.
  4. JD should only play in the field against NL teams, and then only to keep his bat in the order. Every fly ball is an adventure with him out there.
  5. I think I said originally that I understood that we were short on options with Mookie out so I understand why it happened. What I was implying was that I hope I don't see it again. Are you suggesting that we keep JDM in LF and move Beni to CF because JDM's OPS is better than JBJ's? And do what with JBJ? Keep him on the bench? Because I've seen some bad ideas here and that will go down among them. But that still didn't respond to my question of "how would you have felt if his misjudgement of that ball contributed to a run scoring and the Sox lost by one run? Would you still not give a s***?"
  6. Baseball is full of superstitions, maybe more than any other sport. Even though I consider myself to be a rational thinker I sometimes got swooped up into it too. Although I never told any of my teammates about it I always had the same thing to drink before every game and always wore the same socks as long as we were on a winning streak. I even told myself how ridiculous it was and how those things couldn't possibly make a difference in the outcome of a game - but I did them anyway. Dave O'Brian is notorious for NOT buying into superstitions. If a pitcher has a no-no going on he's the first one to talk about it, and it always makes me cringe.
  7. Ok, now how would you have felt if his misjudgement of that ball contributed to a run scoring and the Sox lost by one run? Would you still not give a s***?
  8. I saw bits and pieces of the game and heard other parts. I didn't see this particular play but I was recording the game so I was able to go back and watch it later. In the 8th inning there was a ball hit to LF that JDM misjudged and it went over his glove and one-hopped the Wall. As Tim Neverett said, "that play is usually made by a left fielder". There was a runner on 1st at the time who got to 3rd on the play and the batter ended up at 2b. No error was charged because Martinez didn't touch the ball. Neither later scored but the poor play in the OF extended the inning by one out. We dodged a bullet - this time. Misleading statistic of the day: The Sox have committed fewer errors than any team in the AL. Or at least it was that way at the beginning of the game. Devers committed one today (shock!) so I'm not sure whether that still stands.
  9. I don't disagree with liking those three guys bunched up in the lineup, but at the same time I have a different perspective on it than some do. I "expect" a hitter to be successful about 1/3 of the time, but I "expect" an outfielder to make 99% of the playable balls. But that's also why I'm a JBJ & Mookie fanboy. They have more playable balls than most OF's do. You simply cannot give a team an extra out in an inning and expect them to not score.
  10. We're going to disagree on this. I want competency.
  11. Uhhh.. yes. We dodged a bullet today no thanks to JDM in the OF. As some of us have been saying, he's been making the plays but he looks lost out there. If he's insisted that he get time in the OF to prove he can play there it's backfiring on him. And yes, I know with Mookie out we're short on options but that still doesn't justify having JMart out there. I say give Swihart a chance and let JDM DH.
  12. I've got to agree with this post. We make decisions based on the best information we have at the time and sometimes the results aren't what we expected. In fact, sometimes I feel like I've made a career of saying, "Gee, that seemed like a Hell of an idea.... at the time.
  13. What he said. ^^^^^ C'mon guys. If you're going to jump off the Tobin bridge at least have the decency to wait until late August.
  14. It looks like those posters who were calling for Swihart last night have been heard!
  15. Those people who think they know everything cramp the style of those of us who actually do.
  16. OK. From my perspective the ball took an unpredictable bounce to JBJ's right, and much like a ball hitting a rock or a rut in the infield it was eventually ruled a hit. I do agree that he sold out so he could make a throw to home if necessary but IMO that's exactly what he should have been doing. If he lays back and the run scores he'd be criticized for not charging the ball and setting himself up for the throw. Different people see things different ways. Meh. It's all good.
  17. Take it up with the official scorer.
  18. IMO whether we like it or not Pom has the benefit of seniority on his side. He's been there before and proven he can do the job when he's right. Velazquez OTOH is the new kid on the block and doesn't have that benefit. V proved a lot last night and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him be the first new pitcher in the rotation if/when someone falters or gets injured. And I agree completely that running Pom out there for 5 innings just to build his arm strength up - if that's why it was done - was a mistake. Send him to Pawtucket for 2-3 starts then bring him back up.
  19. And I've never understood why people can't separate sports from real life. Baseball is just a game being played by millionaires (not that their pay matters to me - I'm just stating a fact). If the Red Sox win it doesn't cure cancer and if they lose it's not the end of the world. Sports is - or IMO should be - a diversion for most of us. I believe that most (all?) players are trying as hard as they can to be successful, it's just that some are more talented than others. I find it deplorable and unreasonable when a poster repeatedly attacks a player because that player didn't live up to the expectations of the poster.
  20. Sorry. Sometimes I forget that everyone can read what I've posted here. I'm sure you know that I was just bustin' your chops a bit.
  21. It's easy to see who values defense here and who doesn't. :-(
  22. Just another difference we have, I guess.
  23. I don't know JBJ personally so I can't attest to his character, but I see calling someone out on a message board over his character when they don't know that person is pretty weasely too.
