  1. There seems to be something really odd going on with his pitch recognition. I agree that he K's more than I'd like but without trying to figure out how to verify it he also seems to be getting an inordinate # of BB's recently too. I find that surprising because if I'm a pitcher I'm not going to be walking a guy who's hitting
  2. I'll say it again. Thanks, Manny, you punk.
  3. I'll say it again. Thanks, Manny, you punk.
  4. C'mon Price. That's not getting it done.
  5. Did anyone other than me notice Jason Varitek in the dugout during the last half-inning? I wonder if that means anything.
  6. Wow. I didn't realize that. Who would have thought that after a stint in Pawtucket Scott would come back and be equal to CHRIS FREAKIN' SALE! Who do we bump out of the rotation now? Get real. Bringing in Scott in that situation was a mistake and many of us saw it at the time. Scott may have done well against ML hitters last year and he may have done well against AAA hitting this year but this is the bigs in 2018. Your goal in a tie game is to not give up any more runs so you can win it with one swing of the bat. Bringing in Scott with NO ML experience this year was not the way to achieve that goal. Especially with a rested bullpen.
  7. I know. But I keep thinking that most of those pitches he's hitting are mistake pitches. As Jerry pointed out during the game, Devers can't stay away from that high hard one, and he also can't hit it. When pitchers get that pitch there Devers is toast.
  8. I gave up after the 2nd walk in the 8th. I could see the writing on the wall and I didn't like what I was seeing. Here's the news flash and it ain't rocket science. As a reliever you SIMPLY DO NOT walk the first two batters you see. I do get the rationale for not blaming Cora though. As the saying goes, if it's everyone's fault it's no one's fault.
  9. Nope, Sorry. One can always blame the offense for not scoring enough runs but this one's on Cora. As you said, "Scott left the game with the score tied, 1 man out, runners on 1st and 2d". The thing you left out is that situation was one of Scott's own making by walking those two hitters. It's hard for me to blame Scott because he never should have been put in that position. This one's on Cora.
  10. I'm usually not one to question what Cora (or Farrell, for that matter) does but why the f*** would he bring Scott - in an extremely high leverage situation - in his first game back from Pawtucket?!?! Wouldn't a more rational approach be to bring Scott into a game that's already either won (or lost) to see what he's got? And wasn't the rest of the pen rested after having the previous day off? Or didn't Cora notice that? This was stupidity in action.
  11. Yawn. Does anyone on this Red Sox board care?
  12. "Not bad" may be the understatement of the week. If he didn't throw the knuckler people would be salivating all over themselves at results like that. Myself, I don't care what he throws for pitches if he's going to get that kind of numbers. This pitching staff is really coming together now with ERod & Wright as #'s 4&5.
  13. Which brings us back around to what Bill James said 20 or so years ago. To paraphrase it, Free Agency will benefit teams that know how to manage it. The way to manage it is to draft wisely and try to keep the pipeline filled with quality players knowing that not all of them will pan out. Then use Free Agency to fill the holes. Teams that try to build teams completely through Free Agency will have some short term success but they'll eventually fail because they'll strangle themselves under the weight of increased FA salaries.
  14. I agree completely. Devers is a work in progress but he's delivering more than anyone else on the team can deliver at 3B and it would be difficult to work out a trade for anyone better. IMO his defense is better now than it was in April and while his offense may still be struggling (if you call .755 struggling) it's not realistic to expect all of his game to fall in together in a 3 month period.
  15. Because we may want his bat for the playoff run, but fortunately we don't have the pieces to get him while some other teams do. I don't see Machado coming to Boston under any circumstances. We don't have the pieces to trade for him before the end of the season and JH isn't going to go over the mega-LT limit after the season is over (IMO). And I'm happy about that.
  16. Maybe the best part of our farm being depleted is that we don't have the pieces to get Manny Machado.
  17. Just to keep his production in perspective, Mookie has also scored 54 runs in 50 games, or about 1.1 runs/game. I have to wonder how his total run production (RBI's + Runs scored) compares with other leadoff hitters.
  18. Where the Hell were you people when we were arguing about the effect of adrenaline in the "clutch" discussion??
  19. The thing I'd like to see is whether there was conclusive evidence that the wrong call was made or if there wasn't enough evidence to overturn it. I'm aware that in the long run it doesn't matter - the call is either going to be safe our out and we have to live with it, However, I've had times when I didn't agree with the replay decision (and neither did OB/Jerry) so I'd like to hear the umps rationale. I especially like it when the referee will say "There was no fumble on the play as the runner's right knee touched the ground prior to the ball's coming loose and therefore the runner was down by contact." In baseball it could be "While the runner reached the base safely he lost contact with the base while the fielder's glove was on the runner. Therefore the runner is out." Or even..."After review we have found insufficient evidence to overturn the original call therefore the runner is safe/out". As things currently are we're sometimes left wondering what the Hell they saw there to make that call!
  20. Speaking of the NFL replays, if MLB is going to continue with replays in baseball they've GOT to mic the crew chief so he can explain what they saw and why the call was made.
  21. I don't know the answer to your question, but to be a fair comparison one would have to compare two CF's with GG ability + the low BA. I understand the frustration with what we see every day offensively but there's a certain amount of ignoring his defense that's going on. Last night for example, both OB & Jerry were amazed at the play when JBJ went back on the ball, got turned around, then found the ball in the air and still made the play. That play saved a double and the game was tied after 9. Did it save the game? Who knows? But it saved a double which is often just a single from scoring the winning run in that situation. Plus he drove in a pad run in the 12th.
  22. Ok. Yeah. Me too. But isn't everyone entitled to a mulligan or two when it comes to their opinions?
  23. And that may be a part of the problem.
