    The starting pitchers, as a group, need to perform better for the Sox to be true contenders. Tweaking the bullpen is not the answer.

    This is the same Devers that was practically being written off earlier in the season. That is why patience is a key baseball virtue.

    Right now business is not as good for Mookie and his agent. Free agency may not bring the big offers if Mookie can't prove on the field that 2018 was not a huge outlier in his career. He is still a valuable player because of his skill set, but is he going to be able to parlay that into the big payout he may want? If the incentive of future free agency is not enough to motivate him to better performance than he is currently having, how many teams are going to want to break the bank for him?

    The game isn't over until the last out is made. There is nothing wrong with congratulating hitters for any type of success in any game situation. That is what started this little discussion. I have no problem with players high fiving over any good results for a hitter or baserunner or run scored. Until the last out is made there is not a 100% chance of winning.

    Wins bring happiness, not the other way around. I agree that players are not just bundles of stats that follow statistical rules. The stats only give you an idea of their performance capabilities, strengths and weaknesses. Players are often not as great as their best season nor as bad as their worst season. Physical performance in a sport with such specialized skills is tough to analyze and predict. This team has no reason to be unhappy as they are defending champs. Mookie still smiles and seems to behaving fun playing baseball. If there is anecdotal evidence out their that this is an unhappy team I would be curious to know the source of their unhappiness. Supposedly they were unhappy under Farrell while winning the division two seasons in a row. Now they have Cora who they all seem to love but they are struggling this season. So there is something illogical about putting the blame on emotions just as much as you think there is in a cold, stats based approach.

    ERA is a flawed stat and does not reveal that Sale is not pitching to his own standards or that expected by his manager.

    No runs are meaningless until the last out is made.

    Taking into account his back issues, JD is doing just fine.

    The key stat is innings pitched by start. This is where the starting rotation is not meeting expectations or pitching to norms. This team was built to have starters go deep into games. If that does not happen, the bullpen becomes exposed over the long run. Trying to fix the bullpen just ignores this issue, but the problem remains. The starters are expected to shoulder the bulk of innings pitched. If they do not, the team plan fails and we are seeing the results of that.

    Yes, they do. They understand the value of a productive out. Hitting is very difficult, so any ball hit that produces something good is rightly celebrated.

    It's the entire team. They keep finding ways to lose, and have beefed up their offensive stats in blowouts against teams like the Orioles and the recent slugfest losses to the Yankees. Their hitting stats really don't translate into wins because they keep finding new ways to lose. The Yankees are showing a fighting, winning spirit while the Sox may be resting on last season's laurels. Last years offense had a knack of adding on in key moments while this years offense seems to miss those opportunities.

    No, they weren't. But they were the best run baseball organization.

    The Yankees did not have a large payroll for all 27 championships. But they did have superior management compared to the Sox.

    No, that is an oversimplification. It's the entire team. Cora admitted as much in the postgame interview today.

    And Betts could well become another one. But is a franchise that gives out those contracts doing it to win championships or to excite the fans with star players?

    Waaaaaaay too optimistic! Betts will not improve that much, nor Nunez. Pearce and Eovaldi may not play again, let alone improve on practically no performance in the first half. Sox only chance is the WC, despite your and Cora's optimism. There is no shame in admitting that is the only path. Once you get in, anything can happen. Remember 2004!
