  1. But the formula to calculate it also uses numbers not at all derived from player performance statistics.
  2. So why not bat Leon before Devers and make him into a good hitter?
  3. So his improved hitting is self generated, and not dependent on who hits before or after him?
  4. Looking at WAR is looking at a single number. There is no special way to look at it other than looking at all the numbers used to calculate it. The single WAR number tells us nothing about that. It is used as a shortcut, not as a means to help analyze further. WAR alone tells us nothing about opportunities any more than BABIP measures luck.
  5. Mookie is hitting better because he has adjusted somewhat to how he had been pitched to all season. Pitchers are still pitching to him the same and are still trying to get him to chase bad pitches. This can happen and does to any hitter, no matter how accomplished. Until Mookie stops chasing, he will not get as many pitches to hit.
  6. Not as good as Devers is now.
  7. But why is Devers hitting better?
  8. Is Mookie finally starting to show signs of life?
  9. I think in his first start Cashner made the big mistake of seeing that he was wearing a Red Sox uniform.
  10. I love what Eovaldi did to help the Sox win the 2018 championship. But Nate is not going to be the bullpen savior.
  11. Count me in as a huge fan of Brock Holt. I love the Brock Star!
  12. But the problem remains, as it does, with the use of any single number to evaluate the real value or ability of a player. Also, it is not important to compare players in assessing their value to your team.
  13. And unfortunately, it has so far worked very well. The Dodgers worked the hell out of the entire pitching staff. Their ability to foul off pitches was amazing.
  14. I like to take a realistic approach. I go by the performance of the present team in the present season. This team, from game one, gave me no reason for optimism. They don't have the fire that I see in the Yankees, or the scrappiness of the Rays. The Rays do more with less. And their other two main WC opponents, the Guardians and A's do the same. The Sox will have to clean up on the doormat teams, because the Yanks and Rays are not going down easy. I hate to say it, but the Yankee "savages" seem like the team on a mission this season.
  15. But that isn't what his WAR is saying. A single number is not doing what you are doing. It is not analysing the reason for the number. So in that way, WAR fails.
  16. I'm afraid the real shock may be to optimistic fans like you. I'm starting to think that the Sox won't even make it into the postseason. They just don't have it this season. I didn't think they would struggle like this, but I don't see any signs that they are going to suddenly start hitting on all cylinders.
  17. I think Cleveland will be in it until the end. Don't underestimate a Francona managed team. Oakland will be tough. Agree on Texas.
  18. Good pick up. Now the Sox should be good to go. The starting rotation has to do their thing now.
  19. I think we should keep all of them. But that depends on how much the FO is willing to pay them. I'm in no hurry to trade off one of the best outfields in baseball.
  20. Good to see that realism has finally settled in in the realistic thread. The Sox have never been anything but WC contenders all season. The WC competition is not to be taken lightly. It will be a dogfight to the end. If Sale becomes Sale and Mookie becomes Mookie they will have a better chance of making the postseason. I don't feel like any trades or roster moves are going to enhance their chances. To me, it comes down to performances of the key players. The supporting cast has done more than their share. If the stars rise, the Sox will be winners.
  21. Erod's game against the Dodgers just demonstrated the best solution to the bullpen problem.
  22. They really need to perform as they are capable of, or the rest of the season will be more of the same. It is going to be an extremely competitive WC race, and the Sox need to start firing on all cylinders. Starting pitching is the key to success.
  23. That's exactly right. The starters need to both pitch better and deeper into games. The Sox can't remake their pitching strengths and weaknesses midstream. The pitching issue is a performance issue, particularly starting pitching. They either perform as expected, or the Sox will struggle to make the postseason.
  24. David Ortiz was a smart hitter. His hitting IQ was off the charts.
  25. The help for the bullpen is already on the team. It is the starting pitchers.
