  1. Assuming you mean with the Dodgers, I imagine he should be thrilled.
  2. MLB.com's Jon Paul Morosi reports that the Dodgers will not deal shortstop Gavin Lux (MLB's No. 2 overall prospect according to MLB Pipeline) in a Betts trade package, but they are willing to include outfielder Alex Verdugo -- a former top 100 prospect himself. Mookie Betts rumors WWW.MLB.COM With Mookie Betts entering the final year of his contract in 2020, the '18 American League Most Valuable Player Award winner will be the focus of plenty of trade talks this offseason. Below is a list of the latest news and rumors surrounding the 27-year-old outfielder. I don't know how you don't make this trade if Verdugo is the centerpiece. He gone...
  3. I'm sure hoping so.
  4. The MLB scandal of the future will be rival teams hacking into/planting malware in the robot manager.
  5. The trade simulator puts Betts and Verdugo at roughly equal surplus value, so getting Verdugo plus anything else significant would be a (very pleasant) surprise...if the Dodgers are also taking Price, it becomes even more far-fetched. I would guess that Pollock or Pederson is more likely, but who knows.
  6. There's not a ton of new info there. I won't post lengthy excerpts out of respect for the paywall, but... -Dodgers and Red Sox "remain engaged" and talks have "approached a resolution" in recent days. -LAD doesn't want to part with elite prospects like Lux or May, but Enrique Hernandez, Chris Taylor, Verdugo, Gonsolin, Ruiz, and Gray are all mentioned as potential pieces in a package. -However, Price is involved in some scenarios, which complicates things. Dodgers don't want to take on his full contract and aren't motivated to do so just to land Betts. "Two rival executives" say they wouldn't value him at more than $15M per year.
  7. If the Dodgers offered May in any deal, I think you take it and run, but I doubt he's on the table here.
  8. Hmm...when asked to rank the Dodgers' chances of landing Betts on a 1 to 10 scale (1 being no way, 10 being a lock), Buster Olney answered 8.5... While I've talked myself into not hating some of the Padres trade scenarios, the Dodgers have always seemed to make the most sense here...
  9. If I don't get my way on this, as God is my witness, I will...cancel...the, uh...Red Sox.
  10. Something like 10/365 gives him the highest AAV ever and second-largest contract after Trout. It's also just over halfway between his reported $420M ask and the $300M the Sox offered. Add in vesting options for a potential 11th and 12th year that will be attainable if he doesn't fall off a cliff before then.
  11. I get it...I still reserve my right to bitch about it when it happens, though.
  12. Now, Price for Myers is a swap I do think I'd make...there's been little talk of the Padres being interested in Price (as part of a Betts deal or otherwise), though. That may be the case, but as their "need" to get under the CBT line is entirely self-imposed, and their current payroll situation self-inflicted, I have little sympathy for them and refuse to accept it as an excuse to make bad baseball trades.
  13. Oh, I perfectly understand why the Padres want us to take Myers...I'm just saying you don't give them that salary relief for free. Whatever you feel would be a fair return for one year of Mookie, once you add in Myers with any significant portion of his salary, the cost goes up. By all accounts, the Padres are highly motivated to get out from under that contract...to not use that to our advantage in any negotiation with them would be malpractice.
  14. IMO, if Myers is coming to the Red Sox along with the majority of his money, asking for Gore as a headliner is far from crazy...I can see why that's probably not happening, but I'd hold out for Patino at least. (Play around with the trade simulator if you still think this is unreasonable...people have already posted scenarios where it works.) At a bare minimum, if Myers is in this deal, then Campusano needs to be. There...I'm done.
  15. No offense, but did you read the post you just replied to? Maybe you can explain what conceivable purpose there would be for the Red Sox to even consider taking Myers and his underwater contract in this deal if not to wring a greater return out of the Padres?
  16. Nah, people see the reports that San Diego wants to unload Myers and most of his salary on us and still not give up any top prospects and are calling ******** on that. The "It's only one year" argument is invalidated to an extent in any scenario that has us taking on the majority of Myers' contract, because by doing so, you've now made the Padres significantly better (and the Red Sox worse) in 2021 and 2022 in addition to 2020. Guys like Lucchesi and Naylor would be perfectly acceptable pieces in a Mookie trade sans Myers, but if the Padres want to push Myers' contract on us, they need to pony up more.
  17. Also, a full blowup-and-rebuild scenario is pretty clearly not happening here, no matter how much the Yankees fans among us might enjoy that or insist it is necessary. Can we get that out of the way now?
  18. If the report from yesterday is to be believed... Imagine being the Padres and missing out on getting Mookie Betts for that weak-ass package due to a disagreement over 25% of Myers' salary. Also imagine being the Dodgers and missing out on getting Mookie Betts because you wouldn't top that weak-ass package. The reported offer from the Padres reads like one of those homerish proposals where the Red Sox send Rusney Castillo, a good-not-great prospect, and some other spare parts we don't really need for another team's star...I can reluctantly accept trading Mookie for an impressive return, but not if we're doing the John Lackey trade again on a grander scale, which is what this sounds like. Something still isn't adding up here.
  19. I'll give you one better: Betts and a minor pot sweetener (think Marcus Wilson or Brandon Howlett) to SD for Myers, Gore, and Campusano. We say forget about the luxury tax and take Myers' entire contract. I hope Bloom doesn't continue to waste his time (except to drive the price up for the Dodgers) if the Padres really expect us to take second-rate talent here along with 75% of Myers' money. If you're not using Myers' inclusion to extort an elite name or two out of the Padres, what's the point?
  20. Well that ought to do it (said no one)...
  21. There is a Cape Cod League and Red Sox connection to this tragedy as well... https://www.boston.com/sports/national-news/2020/01/26/john-altobelli-former-cape-league-coach-father-of-red-sox-scout-dies-with-wife-daughter-in-kobe-bryant-crash So sad for all involved.
  22. A horrible day gets even worse...just devastating.
  23. I've always been on team #KeepMookie, but if we truly have two prospect-rich division rivals bidding against each other, we may get to the point where it does make the most sense for the long-term future of the franchise to get the best haul you can. You can always try to sign Mookie a year from now if you so choose. I trust Bloom to do the right thing here.
  24. I know that...the point was to show just how much negative value Myers' contract carries with it.
  25. So the trade simulator accepted a trade of Betts and Chavis to SD for Myers and Tatis (the Padres actually come out on top by 2.2 there)...that's how much of a negative Myers' contract is. The Padres' reported desire to unload most or all of Myers' money on us is understandable...their desire not to give up their best prospects for one year of Betts is also understandable...but expecting to do both is ludicrous. Guys like Campusano and Lucchesi ought to be in play for us without involving Myers at all. If we're taking Myers, I'd want Gore as a starting point, plus other significant pieces...otherwise SD can pound sand.
