  1. So many people are overpaid in our society and around the world. It seems the most bitching about comes over "common people" who make it big via sports, entertainment or some illegal manner. I'm all for a fairer way to even out income disparities, but I would not start with sports and entertainment industries. Their work brings billions of dollars to many people. They happen to share in those profits at a higher percentage than the average person, but the problem is not with the percentage entertainers make; it's with the percentage the average worker makes.
  2. Look what Oprah Winfrey makes. If she makes that much, every baseball player deserves every penny they make.
  3. I'm not saying he doesn't have a good track record of getting his clients top dollar. I'm just saying some GMs shy away from dealing with him over past experiences. Others have listed some players who avoid BorA$$ as well.
  4. Although Damon did well for the Yanks, we were right to let him go. We've actually had a very good track record on big- named we let go to free agency-- just before the sucked or got hurt. Beltre hurt, but we did get JBJ and Swihart as comp picks for letting him go.
  5. If they ask, why not? (Unless another team says don't tell anyone what my offer is.)
  6. There are several teams, I believe, that will not do business with Bore-A$$. I'm not sure his "reputation" with GMs/owners is all that high.
  7. I was not happy with the Moreland signing, but in all honesty, I would not have signed Hosmer to half of what he is reportedly offered. Comparing Moreland to the Santana deal is a little more difficult, and there's little power difference between the two.
  8. What if he has several offers better than five years and $125 million? Should Scott Boras play those teams off against each other? What if he has none, and we're just bidding against ourselves. How much can you trust Boras to be honest about what other teams are offering?
  9. I'm very curious about the idea that maybe no other team has offered more than $125M/5 or $130M/5. I'm not sure I'd rush to offer $150M/6 or set any deadline. I'd try to ask Boras to give us the opportunity to match or top any offer another team presents to JD, but I'm not sure that is always something an agent will agree to do, especially if another team asks Boras not to tell any other team about an offer they give. It's probably best to just give what you think he is worth, knowing full well you are overpaying with the market rate. Don't set a deadline, until you feel your option B or C is about to disappear, and you're not happy with plan D.
  10. Several teams "can afford" him, but for many paying him over $130M/5 would be a huge portion of their entire payroll. They could do it with the idea that they might trade him later, but I haven't heard much about any other teams being seriously interested in JD.
  11. I'm not sure how that "increases interest," since teams needing an OF'er already know he plays OF and about how much he will cost. They have not bid already, because they either don't need an OF'er or they do not want to pay what it might take to get him. So many teams usual high-bidders are looking to reset their tax this year. I'm wondering if any other team would even offer $125/5, or would if they knew the price was dropping.
  12. I know Hosmer is younger, but if he gets $147M/7, I have to think JD will get more than some of us are hoping he has to settle on. I guess it comes down to what another team might offer him, or if there is even a second team.
  13. I mostly fast forward between pitches. I've got it down to a science. It's all the commercials that kill me.
  14. Or, Larry/Ben. We spent a lot of money that year- just not on Scherzer. HRam + Pablo instead of Scherzer.
  15. Not many Sox fans down here in Sugar Land, TX. I usually time it, so I watch most of the game by fast-forwarding commercials and end up watching the last inning or two live.
  16. True, but since we score more at home, we often get more PAs in the process, so, here is fair: 2003-2017 Home: 47,075 PAs 1,333 HRs 2.8% 202 3Bs 0.4% 2,932 2Bs 6.2% 7,478 1Bs 15.9% 4,937 BBs+HBPs 10.5% HRs per AB: 3.2% (1333 in 41567) Away: 48,036 1,486 HRs 3.1% 192 3Bs 0.4% 2,151 2Bs 4.5% 7,261 1Bs 15.1% 4,840 BBs+ HBPs 10.1% HRs per AB: 3.6% (1486 in 43036) Still, clearly more HRs Away than Home. Significantly more 2Bs at home and more singles and BBs at home. How about our pitchers? Home PAs against: 47535 1,169 HRs 2.46% 0.95 HR/9 9.6% HR/FB Away PAs against: 45702 1310 HRs 2.87% 1.11 HR/9 11.0% HR/FB
  17. Try watching the games on tape. Fast forward all the commercials.
  18. Baltimore will trade Machado, so no QO will be attached, unless they trade him to another team before the season starts. If not, the only thing that scares me is the $1M Int'l money lost.
  19. This is a boring winter. Now that Notre Dame football is over, there's not much else to pay attention to.
  20. If there's a buyout, then the option year counts as a year and just the buyout counts on the AVV.
  21. If HRam fails to vest and we decide to let Kimbrel (go with Smith/Thornburg) and Pom (go with ERod/Johnson/Velazquez/Beeks) walk, we could afford JD and Machado without hitting the second penalty level,/
  22. I'm all for hitting more home runs anywhere we play.
  23. Moving a 26th pick to 36th is not "death" to any team. The 90% tax is only on the amount over the second threshold. Neither is too harmful, when you're talking about adding Machado. It's the step up tax rates after year 2 that would hurt most, and signing JD and Machado pretty much assures we will be over the limit for at least 3 or more years. Maybe we miss out on the QO costs, if Machado is traded mid season (or traded to us).
  24. Very true, but even when we had big power teams, we still hit more HRs on the road.
  25. Well, it's $1M x 11 years, so it's $11M for not ever playing again, assuming a career ending injury. One could imagine $30M x 4 years with an opt out after 4 with $2M a year for the next 16 years- basically $152M/20, if he does not opt out. He can retire with a $32M payout over 16 years or opt out and probably make more than that on a 2-3 year deal somewhere, if he's doing well, healthy and wants to play into his old age. That's just $7.6M against the luxury tax.
