  1. My sentiments exactly, except when we play them.
  2. I cheated and added some from the AAA roster I thought might compete for a job. (I should have noted who they were.) They did list 27, not counting Pedey.
  3. I'm not saying I want these guys, but I have to think it wouldn't take much to get some of them. (We might even get some cash to pay part of some deals listed) KC Danny Duffy (30) owed $30.75M/2 but just $13M on lux tax line Ian Kennedy (34) owed $16.5M/1 but $14M on lux tax line (We could trade JBJ for one or both and still be under the tax.) BAL (Big gamble) Alex Cobb (32): $29M/2 and $14.25M x 2 on lux NY Mets Jacob deGrom (31-we don't have the pieces): $128M/4 but just $21.8M x 4 lux Noah Syndergaard (26): $9.7M + 1 arb Steven Matz (28): $5M + 1 arb SF (Huge risk) Johnny Cueto (34) $47M/2 and $21.7M x 2 lux
  4. Why not sign Betts? An OF of beni, Betts & Verdugo is pretty damn good. The IF might be Moreland (Chavis/Dalebec) at 1B, Down (Peraza/Chavis) at 2B, Devers at 3B and Bogey at SS. We'd still need some pitching, but with a clean slate on taxes, and JBJ dropping off the rolls, we might be able to afford Betts and a SP'er and not come close to the $40M line.
  5. MLBTR... So, why do the deal? Not long ago, Bloom says, he expected to keep Betts for 2020. But “teams stepped forward” with increased offers over the course of the offseason. The ultimate package achieved constitutes a “major step forward” for the Boston organization’s future, in Bloom’s view.
  6. I'll admit, I was one who said he's probably one of the best pitchers to come along and if we were going to ever spend big and long for a SP'er, he was as good a bet as any. I knew the years were way too long. I feared the last 3 years. zI knew the cost was high but somewhat expected. To me, he was a big let down. (I never liked the CC signing, so I wasn't let down by that deal.) We essentially paid Price $44M x 4 years. That's like how we essentially paid Renteria over $30M for 1 year but times 4 years! (BTW, there's a sizable group of posters here that think we should not have dumped Price at that cost. They actually think LA either wanted Price at $48M/3.)
  7. Warm climes (or domed stadium cities) could bid for the World Series like the Super Bowl.
  8. He's not going to be looking for big names, but if he does, there's a guy named Mookie.
  9. We could trade for pitchers with contracts not appealing to their current team but are still valuable. We could also still deal JBJ, like I thought was the plan when we tendered him a contract, to free up more money for a pitcher. Maybe some sort of trade like JBJ, Workman and ____ for Familia, Smith and Matz. I'm not sure we have what it takes to get Syndergaard, and his 2 years of team control may not be all that desirable, except to generate excitement and fan interest. (Matz & Familia have only 2 years, too, but Smith is still pre-arb.
  10. I've only owned one Sox shirt with a name on the back. I still wear it to mow the lawn and do yard work. The name: Josh Beckett. (It was gifted to me.)
  11. I thought taking back Pollock instead of paying $48M for Price made sense, since we'd get an OF'er, still save a ton on the tax budget and get someone like Verdugo as well. (I was hoping for Gonsolin and Cartaya or Gonsolin, Gray and Wong.) I was okay with getting Myers, but only if they took Price.
  12. No, the computer says LA got hosed.
  13. I'm thinking Henry will be okay with going over the tax line again, but probably not by $40M. He may be very harsh on mega deals for long years (Good bye Betts for good) I'm thinking he hired Bloom to find multiple moderate deals instead of just a few big deals, while also rebuilding the farm to the point where we can count on a steady stream of young, low cost players from withing the organization- hopefully even a starting pitcher or two. It may take much longer to get back to serious contention than I'm hoping for, but I think we are now on the right track by building up the farm and freeing up a large chunk of the budget for 3 years. He's probably not done. He may find a way to dump more salary before season's end. He may find a few bargain players that help us in 2020 and or beyond, but my real optimism lies in the upcoming winter, when Bloom may have a sizable spending budget to use. If Henry insists on another under tax season in 2021, we may have to wait longer to be significant, but even so, having Bloom is perfect for that situation, too.
  14. I'm not claiming the trade value site is super accurate or all that trustworthy, but it's interesting to see how lopsided they viewed the trade. It would not have been accepted due to LA not getting enough value. Price: -55.3 Value/owed $96M. Break even number: $41.7M. The Dodgers are paying $48M, so we gained $6.3M in "value." Betts: +50.7 Value (despite the $27M/1 contract) Verdugo: +47.7 Value J Downs: +21.7 Value C Wong: +4.3 Value Total: 73.7 Value Sox net gain on talent: +23 Sox net gain on Price: +6.3 Total Sox gain: +29.3
  15. He had to wait to be sure Price was dumped and how much he'd have to work with.
  16. Agreed, and it cheapens the 162 game schedule designed to separate the good from the bad. The only change I could see as being a possible improvement would be to go with 6 teams and do away with the play-in game and have the two best division winners get a buy while the 3-6 seeds play a short 3 game series to get it to 4 teams. 3 plays 6 and 4 plays 5.
  17. I don't know, but we do have a GM with a completely different M.O. than DD, and I'm guessing/hoping we go back to spending large after we reset- just not stupidly and not all the eggs in 1-2 baskets, unless it's Betts.
  18. Hard to know. He's a special case. His AVV is $10.3M, but his actual salary is over $14M. If we wait until June or July, only a pro-rated amount counts.
  19. Hard to imagine a 7 team format that doesn't leave the buy team(s) waiting too long to play. 1 buy team, 6 teams play a 5 game series? 2 buy teams, 3 teams wait for the play-in winner to join for 5 game series? I shutter to think they go to 8 teams, but there'd be a lot of money in all those playoff games and having more teams in the regular season race, too.
  20. Sounds like a man with a plan(s).
  21. soxprospects.com projects this roster for 2021: C Vaz & Plawecki 1B Moreland (option) & Chavis 2B Downs & Peraza 3B Devers & Dalbec SS Bogey & Chatham (Lin) LF Beni CF Duran & Wilson RF Verdugo DH JD SP Sale, ERod, Eovaldi, Perez, Mata/Ward RP DHern, Barnes, Taylor, Houck, Hembree, Brasier, Feltman, Velazquez, Osich, Mazza
  22. Soxprospects.com has this listed for our 2022 projected roster: C Vaz & Wong 1B Casas & Chavis 2B Downs & Lin 3B Devers & Dalbec SS Bogey & Chatham LF Beni CF Duran & Wildon RF Verdugo DH Martinez SP Sale, Eovalid, Mata, Ward & Groome RP DHern, Houk, Taylor, Feltman, Brasier, Velazquez, Osich, Mazza, Shugart, Aybar By 2023, add Zeferjahn, N Song, Jimenez, Cannon & Decker among others
  23. It was very nice when we had Betts, Bogey, JBJ and others making pre-arb and early arb dollars. They contributed greatly while allowing budget space to fill other high need areas.
  24. It might not have been so bad, if they could start 75-80+ games a year, but...
  25. In theory, Chavis could platoon at 1B, and if he doesn't work out, we have Dalbec. It's then one position we have 2 ML ready young players/prospects. I agree, JD should never play OF, except at NL parks, and even then, I'd schedule all his rest days there, if possible. We need pitching for 2021 and beyond, and also for 2020, so that should be our main focus for a trade. A RH'd OF'er would be nice. If we stay well below the luxury tax, we could bring up Castillo for a partial year- his last season of control.
