  1. And now he's gone 15 innings without giving up a run.
  2. Before this game, Gil had gone 11 innings without giving up a run.
  3. After 3 innings, Sox are 0 for 5 with RISP.
  4. Gil is tough. And the bottom of the Sox order is, well, the pits.
  5. Gil made a bunch of good pitches to K Plawecki.
  6. Plawecki, now hear this. No GIDP. Repeat, no GIDP.
  7. Agree with you and vegasbob. Kike and Renfroe screwed up.
  8. First I realized what MFY stands for. Lead off single by JDM!!
  9. I don't want to hear from anyone who didn't say before the 5th started that Houck should come out for the 5th. I am the only one who said it, and I think there was a valid reason for not sending Houck out for the 3d time through the Yankees order. As for sample size, Houck doesn't have a big one, so Cora has to go with what he's got. As someone else has already pointed out, Houck stinks in the 4th and 5th innings. Plus Whitlock has been the Sox best reliever (WAR-wise) on the Sox, at least, before this game, and Whitlock can go 2 innings easily. Hindsight says shoulda, woulda, coulda gone with Houck, but foresight said, even when he is pitching great guns, Houck comes apart 3d time through the order--or the 5th inning, take your pick.
  10. Many thanks to mvp 78 for 3 straight and crucial wins.
  11. Wild applause. I personally am way down because the bullpen stunk yet again and because the Sox got three straight singles to start the 7th, then Shaw lined out (good swing), and Rike and Renfroe struck out like rookies. But it was a good game, despite the outcome, and tonight could be another with Eovaldi vs. Gil.
  12. I frankly prefer 7 + 7.
  13. With this bullpen you seriously think the Sox need to go 9 innings in both games?
  14. Lo and behold, Vazquez also makes a smart swing and gets and opposite field single.
  15. Actually, that was a smart swing, which JDM and others would do well to copy.
  16. Schwarber got lucky, and I'm glad he did.
  17. The good news from this game is that Cora has not used Sawamura, Ottavino, or Barnes. The bad news is that Ottavino and Barnes will be available for the night game.
  18. Absolutely. And that's my point. No way, no how do I see Houck going 7 innings, which means the Sox bullpen always gets a chance to give the game away. My goodness, 10 days ago Barnes--our closer who just got a big pay raise-- gave a game away on just 1 stupid pitch. He's gifted that way. And the next day, because he has only thrown 1 pitch the day before, he came back out and gave up 2 more runs, but this time needed 18 pitches to do it. Season long, Whitlock has been our best reliever, and today he was just awful.
  19. It's really so simple. The Yankees have a bullpen and we don't--and good pitching, especially by a bullpen, routinely beats good hitting.
  20. Whoops. You caught moonslav once again being the cockeyed optimist, which I have to admit is overall a good quality.
  21. Well said, both of you. I wanted Houck back out there because he was doing so well and because I have been suspicious of the bullpen. To be honest, I think the Sox lose this game if Houck doesn't go 7 innings while giving up no more runs. The bullpen is that bad.
  22. It's not babying. Houck has repeatedly shown he is ineffective the 3d time through the order. Whitlock, on the other hand, has shown he is great anytime he goes in and that he can do it for 2 or more innings. Bringing Taylor in vs. lefty Gallo was also the right move until he walked him; I would have sent Houck back out there because I thought he was pitching well and because the bullpen has gone sour recently. But I support Cora's decision. It's a simple fact that, if the bullpen is busted--and it certainly appears to be with Whitlock and Taylor stinking recently, Barnes and Ottavino the same, and Hernandez on the IL--the Sox are in big trouble the rest of the way. As I said on another thread, the rotation has averaged 4.1 innings per start this year, and the bullpen has been crucial to many of the Sox wins.
  23. On the other hand, given what's happened, Cora's trust in his bullpen (1 run lead with 3 innings in which bullpen must hold that lead) clearly was misplaced.
  24. Ball game. Sox bullpen still stinks to high heaven. Three straight walks by two different relievers. I don't question Houck not coming out for the 5th because he has stunk 3d time through the order.
  25. Can there be any doubt that the bullpen has either lost their stuff or their nerve or both?
