  1. FWIW, I'm not buying your little quote at the bottom. For one thing, you start out by misspelling redemption. Second, you emphasize great defense over great hitting, which is just silly and never, ever applied to a Sox World Series team. I love defense, but the bread and butter for winning MLB teams are pitching and hitting, and for the Sox that order is normally reversed to hitting and pitching. Third, you don't even use the word hitting, but instead say "generate runs in more than one way," and that suggests basestealing, bunting, etc, which the 2004, 2007, 2013, and 2018 Sox WS teams did not emphasize. Fourth, you emphasize a "top end catcher," which the Sox just might have--jury is still out--in Connor Wong, but which they did not have on their WS teams.
  2. Terrific win, even with it being the A’s.
  3. One of those GIDP's needed a slick play by Chang who raced to his left, caught it, and flipped it (backhand I think) to Arroyo.
  4. TBD vs. righty Blackburn, ERA 4.86 Big win yesterday in Chicago with 11 runs, 6 against Steele, maybe the Cubs best starter--and a terrific start (6 IP, 0 runs) by Crawford. Smart money says a reliever starts tonight with Pivetta coming in shortly thereafter. Since he moved to the bullpen (May 21?) he's pitched 29 innings while giving up 9 ER for an ERA of 2.79. His last game was July 7 vs the A's: 5 IP, 2 ER (and the win). Connor Wong caught all three games @ the Cubs, so Alfaro is a good bet to catch one of the three in Oakland--probably tomorrow night which should be an all-bullpen affair. However, thanks to days off, Connor should be able to catch all the rest of the July games. Those three days off will also allow Bello, Paxton, and Crawford to pitch an extra game while still getting 5 days rest between starts. None of Sale, Houck, or Whitlock will be back before August--and maybe not until September. Kluber could start again before any of those three.
  5. You may be oversimplifying things. You are dead right we can't be sure who is coming back and when. Also that we can't be sure how good Sale, Houck, Whitlock, or whoever (Klubar?) will be. So, yes, first priority should probably be a starter, but then the questions are: how reliable a starter and for what price in $$ and/or prospects?
  6. Agree a somewhat reliable starter would be great. The issue to me is always, in return for what?
  7. Finally, finally, a name. I have no problem accepting the notion that Ortiz was clutch in the postseason. As someone said, pitching is normally better/tougher in the postseason because of the off days. So the fact that Ortiz was actually better in the postseason is astounding.
  8. Careful with the "stupid" branding, especially when applying it to Cora. Seriously. He's in his 5th season with the Sox, which includes managing the best season, 2018, the Sox ever had as well as 2021 when his managing wrought a minor miracle in getting the Sox to the ALCS. The Sox have a winning record this season with Kike in the lineup. This does not at all mean he was/is the key to winning, but it does undercut what seems to be your belief that his presence in the lineup guarantees the Sox will lose.
  9. His arm, etc are all fine, but apparently the Sox (and the doctors) want to give his face plenty of time to heal. So the word is August. There is finally a report on Whitlock, not good: August or September. He has not thrown at all since that one inning. They are waiting for the bone bruise in his elbow to "resolve itself." Sale is also August at the earliest. Kluber just might return first. Plus Pivetta will probably pitch tomorrow--long reliever after someone from the bullpen starts. In that context Crawford's 6 IP and 0 runs today were huge.
  10. 11-5. Maybe I spoke too soon.
  11. Could not disagree more because you are vastly over-reacting. Crawford still had a terrific start. The Sox still scored 11 runs, a bunch of them against the Cubs 9-2 starter whose ERA before the game was something like 2.67. The score going into the bottom of the 8th was 11-0, so to me that was the ideal time for Cora not only to send Faria out, but to leave him in after all those BB's.
  12. That quote is right but falls into the category of California dreaming.
  13. Nicely said. So was your streak which kind of continues today.
  14. Not really. His OPS against lefties is .867. We all slammed todays lineup against the Cubs ace, but it turns out Cora just might know what he’s doing. That’s heresy on talksox of course. This is actually an amazing game. Even the defense turned a couple of sweet double plays. Chang is terrific, and Arroyo was solid.
  15. Incredible game so far. 6-0 Sox completely unexpected. By me, anyway.
  16. I believe you, especially in the case of Refsnyder. Crawford looks like Paxton yesterday, but worse.
  17. According to some game graphics, Steele throws his 4 seamer over 60% of the time and this slider over 30%. A 2 repertoire that works for a starter.
  18. Not very smart by Refsnyder. Cost a run. That was one of those "I don't believe that went out" dingers by Devers. It was a defensive swing.
  19. Crawford, righty, vs Steele, lefty Big pitching edge for the Cubs: Steel's ERA is 2.56 and he is 9-2. One presumes Cora will send out righty bats, but you never can tell. Yesterday he used righties Arroyo and Kike at 2b and SS against a righty starter. My guess is Refsnyder will get a start, but the real question is whether Duran (OPS vs. lefties now .742) and Casas (.719) will start. I think Turner will again be at 2b with Casas at 1b, Yoshida DH. But that still leaves four outfielders (Ref, Dugo, Duran, and Duvall) for 3 positions. I'm guessing Duran sits despite his red hot July (OPS 1.513). Game again starts at 2:20 east coast time.
  20. Coming from the world champion, that's real incentive.
  21. I'm aware of the issue(s) concerning what he swings at, but, while I do like him to swing at strikes, I also know he can be effective swinging at pitches outside the zone.
  22. I know I'm by myself on this, but Devers' tantrum over the called 3d strike was too me unnecessary. First, neither pitch was way outside. Both were in the buffer zone and in fact both were in almost exactly the same spot. More than that, however, was/is the game situation: Cubs are clubbing the Sox pitching staff to death and have 10 runs. It's nice that the Sox have scored 3 runs, but no way, no how are they going to catch the Cubbies in this game.
