  1. Not signing Rich Hill was stupid............ That one will bother me all year....and could have been a HUGE upgrade for this season.
  2. I understand and do not disagree.........but take Ortiz off the 04, 07 and 13 teams......do they win the WS? Do they make the playoffs? Tough call....... In 46' Ted had probably his 3rd best season ever and won the MVP award........ He then batted .200 with one RBI in the WS against what was thought of as an inferior St.Louis team....... These conversations are tough.....it's SOOOOO difficult to compare players from VERY different era's. If we were to take, say an average present day player.....like JBJ and piut him on the 46 Sox.......he'd probably be one of the best players because of his advanced training, nutrition, playing, scouting, coaching etc.....players now have WAY more at their fingertips then players of yesteryear. Take Ted Williams or Dommagio and pit him against one of our pitchers today...and you'll see a dip. With that said......and I hate the Yankees as much as anybody else..... Mantle could play in ANY era and be amazing. To me.......he was the best of his time and if he stayed away from the bottle, he'd be the best ever.
  3. David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez.......
  4. Ortiz>Ted....... I know it's a horrible thing to say in terms of baseball history and nostalgia..... But I agree with Slash. Ted was quite possible the best hitter to ever live. Ortiz did things in the biggest stage of all time....in front of the biggest audience of all time (Live, On TV AND on Social Media) that may never be matched. I judge players based on not only regular season......but AB's int he big moment. Sure I know it was different back then in terms of making playoffs and such....I get that. I think of it like Marino and Brady. Marino did things in terms of throwing a football that pretty much NOBODY could match. Sure his stats are being broken but he played in VERY different defensive times. Brady has the stats.....but he won 4 SB rings....... Pretty sure nobody will ever say Marino was a better QB than Brady (Unless they are a hater....and they're just stupid). The problem baseball is that it has so much history, mystique and nostalgia behind it.......WAY more so than the NFL will ever have. We love Ted.....he was a great hitter, a legend and an American hero......it's hard to argue against that. Take all of those things away though........would we be still be having this conversation?
  5. That SHOULD have been a bargain considering his talent. I think it's getting to the point where his biggest issue is the 6 inches between his ears. Once that goes.....it's over. Bard and Knoblauch come to mind whenever I think of excellent players that just LOST it upstairs. Obviously at this point we have to wait and see.....however, if some of you caught what Farrell said the other day when he wasn't ever ASKED about Buch.....he pretty much said the same thing. Farrell NEVER does that to one of his players......so you gotta think there is something going on.
  6. Agree. I hate to keep using this excuse......but I'm going to pin it on the cold......for now. The 3 games he sucked at were in Boston.....not exactly steamy weather. If this continues once the warm weather comes along.....then I'll be more concerned. One GREAT thing about Price is that he is known around the game as pretty much one of the hardest working pitchers out there. As much as it is concerning us.....it's probably driving him NUTS.
  7. I still hold out hope for Castillo. I never really viewed it as a panic move because everyone knew he would take a year to make it into the ML club since he really didn't play for over a year. I don't think he's going to be the "Ron Gant" clone that many compared him to.....but I think he will be a serviceable player. He has played at a pretty high level everywhere he played and he DID do well in the minors last year.......something may just be wrong between the ears.....who knows. Castillo under performing is not a huge issue yet (although the contract could get that way). Right now I want to see our starters ALL get on track....not just Wright and Porcello (never thought I'd say that) and I'd like to see Mookie start producing as well. Hes our table setter and this is the second year in a row he has gotten off to a slow start (power number are there yes.....but not a lot else). All in all though......I'm liking this team more and more. They never seem out of the game, where last year the second they fell behind that was it.....
  8. Well..........I'm pretty sure 2 out of 3 isn't too bad in regards to that avitar.....
  9. HAHA!!! I wish I was tech savvy enough to do that! Other than using the internet, my computer is pretty much a paperweight! Looks like that place is pretty much toast now.
  10. .........wait......you're in your 20's?????
  11. The guy who always comes to mind retiring at the top of his game was the great Barry Sanders.........obviously a completely different sport.......but man.....he was the epitome of a great athlete. For some reason baseball seems to be the sport where people hang on a bit too long. I know baseball has more nostalgia and 'mystique' than any other sport.......but I hate seeing players get too caught up in it, causing the game to go by them, yet still trying to play.
  12. Agreed. I always think about Babe Ruth and Mays in terms of hanging on for 1-2 seasons too long. We want the greats to last forever......but father time can make things borderline sad.....
  13. Nice!!!!!! Welcome Notin!!!
  14. .......Ouch. Somebody ran out of Cheerios this morning.........
  15. Pike.....seriously stop. We were asked to not bring past squabbles here. Please respect that. BTW..... am i the only one that smiles when he says the word 'squabble' out loud??
  16. We often live in a bubble in regards to the team we rout for. Holt ALWAYS had a good hit tool when he was coming up in the minors....and kept it going in the Majors. What people didn't expect from him was that he would be an AS. He was projected as a borderline 'solid utility player'. He was an Allstar last year and it DID come out of nowhere.....admit it.....most here were probably a bit shocked. The iron was hot last year. We have seen that Holt plays well....then folds for a long period of time. That should be common knowledge by now. Holt is not in our long term plans. WE have ZERO pitching coming up worthy of a #2 role in the next 3 years. Why not package Holt, Devers and a lower level prospect for a #2?? TEAMS WERE LOOKING AT HOLT!!!!! We didn't need him the last half of last year.....and we NEED a #2 this year more than a utility player.......
  17. Last year H9lts value was at an alltime high.....so was Devers. If we could have gotten a #2 pitcher for Hlt and Devers....plus a lower prospect for a REAL #2.....would you have done it????
  18. Understood.......I was talking about last year when we NEEDED some pieces for THIS year. Holt is a backup player.....borderline starter. That we can all agree on. He was an AS last year.......we needed SP and BP help. Bench players are a dime a dozen. SUre they may not perform as well as Holt....but they are still a bench player. If we could have packaged Holt (when his stock was high) with other Minor League talent for a REAL #2 pitcher.......why wouldn't you have done that???? Teams WERE looking at Holt at the deadline last year (google it). Something could have gone down.......when would have been better than Buch as our #2.....
  19. BOOM!!!!!!!!!! Idiot is here!!!!!!!!!! Keep us updated my friend!!!!
  20. If Farrell wasn't the Manager, Young would be a better hitter than Cabrera.........
  21. Castillo had a lousy spring. I have said this A LOT......PLAY (*&^%'N CASTILLO!!!!!!!! What do you have to lose. Pretty sure the drop-off from Yound/Holt would not be more than Young/Castillo......... Holt should be the IF bench player. Young should be OF and Castillo the starter...... (I would rather have Castillo/Holt.......but the Sox committed to Young for decent $$$ for 2 years.......)
  22. Agreed Moon. We have ALWAYS agreed on the thing about Holt.....STRIKE WHEN THE IRON IS HOT!!!!! We could have gotten something GOOD for him last trading deadline. Holt ALWAYS hits a wall in late June....... Holt was a throw in in the Hanrahan trade. If we could have gotten a BP arm or a solid pitching prospect....OR he could have been in a bigger package for a TOR starter....WHY NOT DO THAT?!?!?!?!
  23. Funny you say that.....I was noticing it the the other day. I like the approach to the plate so far this season A LOT better than the last few seasons for sure. They seem more patient and are taking more pitches and fouling off the junk a lot more. I'd like to see Mookie become a bit more patient but with his success...it's hard to complain! I think when he gets into a slump his patience wanes a bit....but whose wouldn't??
