  1. The Sox actually had a decent second half of the season, so not a lot of reason to boo them then. They also had a decent home record (43-38)
  2. Not sure about the comment about 'replacing the DH' adding to the payroll - assuming we keep him, he's already on the roster - Hanley. I'm for keeping him for 2016, at 1B, and let him slide into DH in 2017. I think he could be an outstanding DH - he would stay healthy, and without having to learn a new position for the second or third year in a row, he can focus only on hitting. So unless we can get a really good return for him without having to pay a massive amount of his salary, I say keep him and live with his defense at 1B (which I think will be much better than his LF defense). In fact, I would extend this to say, unless we are blown away by an offer and don't have to pay any of his salary, I would keep him to fill the DH role in 2017 and beyond.
  3. Definitely fills a need for a RH 4th outfielder. Good deal. Also, he crushed Sox pitching so nice to get him on our side....
  4. Re: the discussion of signing a #1/ace vs a couple of lesser arms (i.e., Price vs Chen/Lackey-type thing).... I am firmly on the 'sign a #1' side. The Sox have not had a stopper for quite some time, that guy that gives you confidence he can stop a 2- or 3-game slide and match up against the other team's ace. I'd be okay if they went into the season with Price and the current pitchers, in some sort of order/mix. Sure, I'd like a second top-notch arm, but not everyone has that these days and I think we could compete in the AL East with that set-up.
  5. Of our 2 crappy contracts, Hanley and Panda, I think moving the former is more likely because he can hit and has power.
  6. Cheers, mate.
  7. When you sign a guy to a 6 or 7 year contract, you assume years 5 - 6/7 are going to be wasted money. You just hope you get what you paid for in years 1-4.
  8. X2. Price does have that 'ace' make-up - cockiness/nastiness - like Pedro. Not quite THAT much, but he has it. That's been missing from our rotation for a while.
  9. I'd have no qualms about Greinke. I'm a little less sold on Cueto.
  10. Looks like he is going to be plenty busy after he retires..... http://nesn.com/2015/11/david-ortiz-promotes-dating-website-in-hilarious-saturday-night-live-skit-video/
  11. So he will either learn to play 1B, or get hurt and miss the season..... Either way, the Sox benefit....
  12. Yes, Larry liked him.
  13. LOL, wasn't that the book on Dice-K as well?
  14. I was actually thinking more from a perspective of being a good fit for DH, vs personality-wise..... But I see your point. Still, if he hits like that I'll take it.
  15. I read somewhere that Price => Cubs is looking less likely. Let me see if I can find it.... http://www.foxsports.com/mlb/just-a-bit-outside/baseball-joe/blog/david-price-chicago-cubs-free-agency-hot-stove-john-lackey-fernandez-gray-trade-rumors-112015 Re: Hanley - unless blown away with a trade offer, I'd keep him since he can DH starting in 2017. He's probably the closest thing to a Big Papi we would have and could thrive in that role. I'd play him at first as I think he could be average, at least. As far as concentration, he'd be involved a lot in the game, more so than in left field, and I think he still has the hands and athletic ability to do, especially since it looks like he's slimmed down a bit. And keep Papi in his ear this year as well.
  16. I'd put Kelly in instead of Owens. Not sure I want 3 lefties in the rotation. And Kelly has such good stuff that I'd want to see it play first, coming off a decent end to the season in 2015. He went 8-1 with a sub-4.00 ERA in the second half. Why not give him a shot to continue that trend? Owens I think needs a little more seasoning in AAA.
  17. I find it interesting all the love for Jose Fernandez, while there is a lot of concern about Matt Harvey's arm due to TJ surgery. Harvey pitched a full season last year, and pitched well, with spectacular games thrown in. I think he proved his arm is fine. And since pitchers typically take 2 years to recover, he should be better this year. I like Fernandez a lot, and both having Boras certainly makes that a wash. Fernandez being younger is a benefit, but I haven't seen him pitch enough to be able to judge how he pitches with no stuff - does he battle and scratch his way through? I've seen Harvey pitch a lot and really like him. I think it's more likely you could get him than Fernandez.
  18. These guys are professionals. Issues he has had in the past with the Sox will disappear when the money becomes huge. And the guys on the Sox he had an issue with - really mostly Big Papi - will embrace him if he helps them win.
  19. Well, who you want is not exactly the question that Jack asked....
  20. Is Cueto an ace? I'm not sure..... I will say Price. Love to see the 'welcome' text from Big Papi on that one.....
  21. If nothing else, this off-season isn't shaping up to be boring.....!
  22. Lots of talk about the Mets trading Harvey again. Betts and Bogaerts for Harvey and ? Not sure I would do that deal, and I can't think of anyone else on the Mets roster I would want for that price. Maybe Conforto but he's probably too much from the Mets side.
  23. Re: Cincinnati - would rather see them go for Todd Frazier vs Votto, and move Sandoval - or move Hanley and play Sandoval at first. Re: Sale - he concerns me a big, his mechanics are so quirky that I wonder how long it will be before he breaks down. He's tall but weighs nothing. OTOH, his contract only runs through 2017 (plus 2 team options) and is very reasonable.
