Except for his biggest problem is that he doesn't.
-John Sickels, who had him ranked as the Yankees 12th best prospect
He's walked 4.0 batters per 9 innings pitched in his professional career and he's walked 4.9 batters per 9 innings this year.
I would try to acquire Peavy, Luis Villanueva and Luke Hochevar. Players I would make available include Middlebrooks, Lavarnway, Brentz, Britton, Marrero, Johnson, Wilson, Almanzar, Hazelbaker, Hassan and Kalish.
I agree, I think we'd be better overall with Holt or Snyder at third base right now. I would stay away from Drew, since he's never played third base before and he's not hitting at all.
I would like us to look at a third baseman. I wouldn't give up too much to get one because we do have back up options in Bogaerts and Middlebrooks, but Drew and Iglesias not hitting and Iglesias playing poor defense at third base is killing us. I'd check the price on Headley, Frandsen, Aramis Ramirez and Callaspo. More reasonably, we might be able to work something out for someone like Cody Ransom or Placido Polanco.
September call-ups don't have any separate rules for service time. At this point, I think the only thing holding Bogaerts back is that they want him to get a chance to play multiple positions so once they call him up they can get him regular playing time. If Iglesias and Drew keep sucking at the level they are, however, we could call up Bogaerts and get him at bats as the regular third baseman.
If the White Sox get Middlebrooks, they shouldn't also get one of our top 10 prospects. I'd be comfortable with Middlebrooks and Alex Wilson/Devon Marrero/Brian Johnson. Brentz, Almanzar and Hazelbaker are all eligible for the Rule 5 draft, but I'd make sure we have enough left to package for a reliever or two.
Yeah, I understand where you're coming from. I just find it exceedingly unlikely that Middlebrooks becomes a solid starting third basemen for a contending team. I pointed out months ago how similar his minor league and rookie year numbers are to Jeff Francour.
I'm still hoping he gets hot and helps us down the stretch, but I'm not counting on it. I feel better about the chances of Peavy being able to provide some rotation depth and allow us to move someone to the bullpen.
Soriano's an upgrade, but why trade a projectable young righthander for a 13% chance of making the playoffs? The Yankees may only be a few games out of the second wild card spot, but they also have a run differential of -4 and have gone 24-29 since May 26th. This move might save them some money on the luxury tax next year, but having Soriano and Wells on the team limits the Yankees options of how they can attempt to improve. If Soriano improves the Yankees by a win, and that moves them back in the draft, remember this move next year when the team ahead of them takes prospect you guys wanted.
If we could use Middlebrooks as the centerpiece in a Peavy deal, I would do that deal in a heartbeat and I'm not even a fan of Peavy. I think we need to consider that Middlebrooks will never again regain the form he had last year and the longer we wait, the less value he'll have in a trade.
The rumor is that the Cubs will be getting Corey Black in return. 21 year old, projectable righty who's already hit triple digits with his fastball. Needs polishing, he's only recently converted to pitching fulltime. Not a top prospect but he's not exactly the kind of non-prospect you'd want to give up on a deal like this either. The Yankees liked him so much they invited him to major league camp in Spring Training.
