  1. We are only screwed for one year. If we exceed the cap this year we are screwed for many years.
  2. There are lots of guys who have big arms who failed in the majors, especially in the ALE. Lets see what he can do in the pressure cooker that is NY. Meanwhile, the Red Sox are doing very well, spending nothing, waiting until next year. This IMO is the correct approach. They cannot afford to exceed the cap this year if they want to exceed it next year. We should NOT be going after Oswalt, even if it makes us a better team this year. Its all about the future now.
  3. This is all for the best, really. I hope the Sox spend NO MORE MONEY. There is no way in hell we make a run at the ring now, what with the Yankees getting a good pitching staff and the Rays already having one. This season is pretty much over before it even got started. Its a rebuilding year. But just wait 'till next year.
  4. You would rather watch Varitek continue to embarass himself when he should have retired gracefully? Varitek is pathetic, useless..and he is a distraction. He is part of the way things used to be. He needs to pack it up right now.
  5. All GMs lie. You should know that. And where there's smoke, there's fire.
  6. Neither can hit the baseball any more. At least Shoppach can play defense. The presence of Varitek in ST will provide too much temptation for the "good old boy network" to activate, allowing him a roster spot on the team. Watch. Wakefield is next.
  7. Varitek has been invited to come to spring training. Morons.
  8. Ortiz, Fred lives near LA; I live near the Napa Valley. If you are coming here in July there is a chance we can wave to each other as we pass by airborn. I will be in Cozumel on a diving trip at the end of the month. If you make it up here earlier let me know and I can show you around the wine region. Gotta split to the gym.
  9. Fred does not live near the Napa Valley. Its from me....and its Pumpsie Green. When you decide when you are coming up I can send you my contact information.
  10. The pitching staff has not added any significant talent and has finished NINTH in ERA two years running. It is unreasonable to expect that somehow we will be much better next year-just as it is unlikely that the staff will be much worse. Until we add talent, we will still have a mediocre pitching staff and will be unable to make a real run at a ring.
  11. Napa is practically in my backyard Ortiz. Its only about a 40 minute drive from here. I lived in St Helena, in the heart of the Napa Valley wine country, for 10 years. When you come up here let me know. I can show you around that valley and the next valley over, the Sonoma area, where I think the wines are even better.
  12. Nope. So near, but yet so far. Someone famous once said that. If they fail to get a #4 SP and a good RP then I don't think we really can compete for a ring. It will be very very tough.
  13. Well said VA! I don't think your post was overly optimistic, unrealistic, or pessimistic. The fact is that this board, or any Sox board, would be as boring as watching the paint dry if everyone agreed on everything. There needs to be a mix of viewpoint. When we disagree, however, we ought to try to disagree agreeably and not resort to name calling and personal attacks. Right now, without a #4 SP, IMO there is not much reason to be optimistic for this team this year. Get a good #4 and another arm for the pen and all that changes.
  14. Guess you forgot to include him on your list of significant pitcher losses. He was very effective for most of the year, except when he was injured. So we lost two guys who were good, Paps and Wheeler, and gained two who might be good. Net is zero. We have hired no significant SP. If we move Bard and/or Aceves to SP, we lose them from the pen. Net is zero, again. So we have not improved our pitching, which finished ninth in the AL two years running, at all. What do you realistically expect from them? Our staff is simply not that talented.
  15. Wheeler is a pen guy. We need, in addition, a decent #4 SP like Kuroda or Jackson or possibly Oswalt. Those guys (#4s) are not dominant pitchers, usually. But they should be able to keep their team in the game.
  16. I did not intend to compare their jobs directly, but I think that Friedman is doing his job much better than Epstein did his job here. They are similar jobs, but not identical.
