I don't think he got any other offers because he WAS offered arbitration. That figure of $9M per year is really stretching it. I look at it this way: arbitration will get him $15M. If he is productive this year he is ours for just $3M next year; if not, we can walk away from that. That said, I think it would have been wiser not to offer arbitration and let him walk, using the money to sign Oswalt or Kuroda for a year. Our offense would still have scored lots of runs.

Its an excellent point if you think the team was able to compete for a ring this year, yes. And certainly using that money for a good SP who would sign for one year (eg: Oswalt or Kuroda) made a hell of a lot more sense than giving it to Ortiz. It was a calculated risk-one the Sox management lost (again). They FO is really going to have to learn how the game is played all over again.

Its because his ERA pitching primarily against the very weak hitting ALW (ie the A's and M's) was 4.40 and someone here mentioned that his ERA vs the Yankees is 6. He would be just cannon fodder out there. We don't need more cannon fodder: we already have Miller and now Silva. Unless, of course, we are clearly in a rebuilding year, Red Sox style, and the owners are already surrendering the season to the better ALE teams.

Nope. I don't. Neither of us can prove it, but I think that if he got that offer he would have taken it. This is probably his last year in baseball IMO. He is severely limited by the fact that he cannot play in the field. I wish someone HAD offered him that money. I suspect he got NO offers once arbitration was offered by the Red Sox

What's Bill Lee doing these days? He is a very nice guy too. So is John Smoltz. They are also to be found wherever we found Carlos Silva.

My comments obviously refer to the current roster, since I cannot predict the future. If we got a Garza or even a Jackson that would change things. I have no reason to believe that we are going to obtain quality SP, based on what I have read about even guys like Oswalt or Kuroda being too expensive.

Therein lies the root of the problem. Ortiz screwed up the club's strategy when he unexpectedly accepted arbitration. Our offense needed no help, even without Ortiz. But our pitching sure did, and sure does now, and will all season long. Hell, the best we can do now is..........Carlos Silva??? Give me a break.

Ortiz failed to get any offers of more than one year. At the end of last season he commented about his desire to leave all the drama in Boston for a more serene atmosphere. The Red Sox offered him arbitration not because they really wanted to pay him the $14-15M he will get but because the took a calculated risk that he would decline it and then we would get two good draft picks. They guessed wrong, and now they don't have the money to buy the SP the team desperately needs. At least thats my take on it.

Does anyone know where we really stand with the cap? I have read that we are already over it and I have also read that the owners are trying hard to stay under it. Both cannot be true.

I think a power struggle will happen. The question is whether Valentine has enough time to complete his appointed task before that happens. I think he can do it.

Well, there is Francona.... Oh wait-I guess that in the end, he really wasn't that successful at all. His teams tended to win games in spite of him rather than because of him. I would much rather have a manager who covers for his recalcitrant self-absorbed spoiled players than any on the lists you have provided. Bring back Terry!
