  1. For once I agree with you. The Yankees did just vastly improve their SP, most likely (ie as long as Pineda is as good as advertised). Moreover, this is not Cherington's fault. If the owners have not given him the go-ahead to spend money, then he has no money to spend. What do you guys think he ought to do? Dip into his personal savings to write Oswalt a check? If anyone is to "blame", its our billionaire owners. And frankly, I am not sure I would even blame them. This is a year to step back, rebuild our resources, and exercise financial restraint. We sacrifice this year so that we can compete over the next several years. The only competing we will be doing this year is for third place.
  2. You know, usually your posts are logical, though I may not agree with them. But I am not going to allow "injuries" to be an excuse here without comment, unless they are extraordinary. A single injury to Sabathia is not in that category. Sorry. Injuries happen. We have a mediocre pitching staff. Thats just the way it is, with or without CB.
  3. ALL teams have injuries. Next year it could be Beckett; it could be Lester; it could be CC; it could be Pineda. Its insane to say that gee, we could be better if not for injuries. Thats ******** and you know it.
  4. We are only screwed for one year. If we exceed the cap this year we are screwed for many years.
  5. There are lots of guys who have big arms who failed in the majors, especially in the ALE. Lets see what he can do in the pressure cooker that is NY. Meanwhile, the Red Sox are doing very well, spending nothing, waiting until next year. This IMO is the correct approach. They cannot afford to exceed the cap this year if they want to exceed it next year. We should NOT be going after Oswalt, even if it makes us a better team this year. Its all about the future now.
  6. This is all for the best, really. I hope the Sox spend NO MORE MONEY. There is no way in hell we make a run at the ring now, what with the Yankees getting a good pitching staff and the Rays already having one. This season is pretty much over before it even got started. Its a rebuilding year. But just wait 'till next year.
  7. You would rather watch Varitek continue to embarass himself when he should have retired gracefully? Varitek is pathetic, useless..and he is a distraction. He is part of the way things used to be. He needs to pack it up right now.
  8. All GMs lie. You should know that. And where there's smoke, there's fire.
  9. Neither can hit the baseball any more. At least Shoppach can play defense. The presence of Varitek in ST will provide too much temptation for the "good old boy network" to activate, allowing him a roster spot on the team. Watch. Wakefield is next.
  10. Varitek has been invited to come to spring training. Morons.
  11. Ortiz, Fred lives near LA; I live near the Napa Valley. If you are coming here in July there is a chance we can wave to each other as we pass by airborn. I will be in Cozumel on a diving trip at the end of the month. If you make it up here earlier let me know and I can show you around the wine region. Gotta split to the gym.
  12. Fred does not live near the Napa Valley. Its from me....and its Pumpsie Green. When you decide when you are coming up I can send you my contact information.
  13. The pitching staff has not added any significant talent and has finished NINTH in ERA two years running. It is unreasonable to expect that somehow we will be much better next year-just as it is unlikely that the staff will be much worse. Until we add talent, we will still have a mediocre pitching staff and will be unable to make a real run at a ring.
  14. Napa is practically in my backyard Ortiz. Its only about a 40 minute drive from here. I lived in St Helena, in the heart of the Napa Valley wine country, for 10 years. When you come up here let me know. I can show you around that valley and the next valley over, the Sonoma area, where I think the wines are even better.
  15. Nope. So near, but yet so far. Someone famous once said that. If they fail to get a #4 SP and a good RP then I don't think we really can compete for a ring. It will be very very tough.
