We should have won and we did have a better team at the time. The players kicked the pooch. Farrell had one bad move which was removing Buch too early IMHO. With that said, Farrell was NOT the reason nor was DD. He put together a great team this offseason. The loss is on the players. Yes, Pedey was injured, but overall The team just didn't perform.

I hold onto Kopech and Groome for right now. I think BOTH could be special. I want to see how Kopech does in AA this year. We need a power RHP in the rotation. Too many LHP IMHO. Also, if Kopech cant cut it as a starter, hes got 100++ in his back pocket so a closer is not out of the question. Right now I think I hold onto him. His value isnt really high but there are people watching him now since he hit 105 on the gun this year.

2016-2017 Offseason Trade Speculation Thread

Just said I wouldnt trade Moncada, so No. I think thats way too much for those guys. Quintana is the only real value to me. Too much talent given up for frazier and Robertson. We dont need another LHP andway...at least not without trading one. That would make 4 LHP, a flutter baller with a bad wing, and an inconsistent head case. Id like a nice Power RHP in there somewhere. Hopefully Kopech (AA) can find some consistency and really breakout this year against advanced hitters. I think DD will make a move for Sale and it will probably include Erod somewhere. -
2016-2017 Offseason Trade Speculation Thread

I just think his all around game will be better. His hit tool is outstanding vs LH and RHP. His defense is GG calibur. Does not have the same arm, but Im not as high on JBjs arm as a lot of people. I value Beni's all around game and approach more than JBJ. I think JBJ can get in his own head and overthink things, Especially with the bat. Jbj starts arb and Benintendi has 6 years, which is not really a big deal to me because we got the $$. Its still part of my thought process though. Now, thats not to say I dont value JBJ. Of course I do or I wouldnt be listing him as a headliner to a deal. JBJ is a GG Allstar CFer which will bring back something we need. We have another Allstar, possible league MVP, who can play CF and has GG defense already in RF. I can also easily see Beni as an AS GG OFer in the future. so my thought is we can afford to trade JBJ and still have two studs still out there with Moncada being groomed in the OF this winer and into 2017. Young and Holt could platoon out there, which is fine until Moncada is ready. So, with Moncada now being worked out in the OF, I can once again see three young AS OFers by 2018. Moncada making his OF debut sometime in 2017. -
2016-2017 Offseason Trade Speculation Thread

Wow, seriously? Bogey has been a steady 4+.WAR for two years. He had a extened slump at the end of the year and was still on of the top SS in the league. To use him to make your point for JBJ, IMHO, is a bit much man. Plus your right, theres is nobody ready to just jump into the SS position like there is in CF. Bogey is a perenial 300 hitter and all star. Had over 20+HR which is one of the best for a MLB SS. Everyone knows your love for JBJ, but when you have two more than capable CFers on either side of him that makes him more available than some guys. Same with Swihart. Swi may have the bat, but his D behind the plate sucks right now, as well as all the other intangibles that Leon and Vaz have. He could possibly be a Lfer if JBJ was traded. Obviously it depends on how other GMs value our players based on their needs. Teams may just want Beni or Someone else. I love JBJ, but I like Betts and Beni more. If a GM wanted JBJ as a centerpiece along with Swihart+ for a top starter, Id do it depending on the pitcher and other players involved. I for no reason move Benintendi, Betts, Xander or Moncada. Make me offers on anyone else. -
Beltran is an interesting option as a short term DH. Hes still close to a 300 hitter with some HR power from both sides without the big price tag. Honestly, out of all our young MLB ready players, I can see DD trading Swihart and/or JBJ. They BOTH have great value and could possibly bring back something worth moving one, or both for. Beni or Betts could easily shift back to CF and Vaz/Leon is a solid tandum at catcher for a few years. Moncada will be in AAA to start 2017 IMHO. And should be. I dont like the idea of Chapman because hes a closer and will want to close. Kimbrel is our closer. Thats going to piss one off. Not a good idea financially as well. Not sure Melancon will want to come back here. I think he likes a dimmer spotlight. It would have to be Someone that can be a late inning arm IMHO. A guy who gets swings and misses is what Id look for.. I like the possibility of Koji for another year too...we rotate a few of our AAA guys that are possibilities like Austin Maddox, kyle Martin, Robby Scott did good in his SSS, And Brandon Workman has healed up and is back. He could be a bullpen or starter option. Besides a closer and maybe a real proven consistent guy like Koji, I dont like to put too much more $$$ into the pen if I dont have to.

Im hearing Moncada will be playing a couple positions, not just 3b. He very well could end up in the OF, with one of our three right now being moved. Pablo is probably going to get a fair shot at the starting 3b in 2017 since nobody really stood out. If his fat ass comes in with a much better attitude and he takes full responsibility for how he f***ed the team over the last couple years not being in shape and performs well, then im sure RSN will forgive him. I dont trust him and I cant stand his "meh, whatever" type attitude. Really, besides the pen and maybe a move for a starter Im not sure theres a huge need to go get a Bautista/EE type...thats gonna cost a LOT of $$ for a DH...Hanley is your 1b so no, that position is NOT open. The starting nine is pretty much set already, save for b. But we have options already in house with Pablo coming back. Shouldnt be a overly busy offseason like last year, but I wouldnt put it past DD to make a big trade. I just dont see a big FA signing, but more a trade. I can also see a couple of those involving certain players that would upset a few fans here.
-
Carson Smith is probably counting as one of those guys Moon. He may bring back Koji for low money, which wouldnt bother me either. Kimbrel, Smith, Barnes seem like the main guys next year as it stands right now. Not sure who they consider their main LHP. That may be something DD addresses first in the pen. I think he could sign one main piece and then do the usual of throwing a bunch of guys at the wall and see who sticks. We have a few, what seem to be, decent possibilities on the farm.
-
And why would you note that he HAD to play them and couldnt rest Bogey and the others a day or two more? He could have easily not played Bogey that many days in a row. Farrell has had a tendency to over use his players, especially pitchers.
-
I was not happy to see that...but Mom asked him to from what i hear...
-
Hes been playing sporadically since coming back. Hard to get the full timing back when hes playing a couple times a week, so Im not too concerned about that performance.. From what Ive seen overall, and what i believe he can be when all is said and done is around 380. I agree its optimistic and the number is always give or take a few points, So yeah, thats my opinion.
-
I have to believe after the great night Vaz had the other day he needs to see Holiday too so he can make a choice for the PO roster ....Vaz vs Holaday... Obviously my choice is for Vaz.
-
Clay Buchholz - Is he worth the 2016 option?
southpaw777 replied to Slasher9's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
Have agree with you. Hes been worth his 13m this year just by his august/sept performace as well as his work out of the pen -
Ill take 800-820 from the corners. 850 + isnt easy for most. Whats the average mlb ops for 3b this year? That would be more of a fair comparison
-
Exactly...anyone saying that Moncada has been "exposed" hasnt a clue. He is a 20-21 yo kid who was given a COC in MLB waaaaay before he was truly ready. Hes only played in 100 professional games.. He's getting a great learning experience being up here and watching the other guys take care of business... talking to Papi, Hanley, Pedey and all the vets, taking it all in. My guess is he should get time in winter ball and a full year in AAA at 3b...Unless his perfromance dictates a quicker rise to Boston. But I wouldnt count on him to start in Boston in 2017..
-
I was talking when all is said and done. He will have adjustments first of course, but like Mookie, i think his hit tool is plenty good enough to be a leadoff guy...which was my main point And yes, i think Beni can be around a 380 obp.

Clay Buchholz - Is he worth the 2016 option?
southpaw777 replied to Slasher9's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
The real question is...is Clay worth 13m to give us 15 great starts? -
Dude, enough already. Everyone knows you didnt want the trade. The fact that you have let us know all friggin year has gotten very very stale...last i checked we won the division with him...
-
They had holaday come in for Leon instead of Vaz, im guessing Farrell wants to see him and Vaz before he makes the decision who the PO catchers are. Vaz should win that one out IMO. He has looked better than Holaday in his limited action.
-
Beni looks like he could be a solid leadoff hitter. I really dont see a prolonged slump from him. The bat is too good. Too much plate coverage. I see a 300BA with a High obp. 380-400ish. I also can see 20+ dingers and 20sb. Seems like a logical choice to leadoff.

I like Hernandez as well. I dont think hes a permanent option, but hes earned a "next in line" behind Shaw Hill and Holt. Pablo, IMHO, has hurt this team with his selfishness. He was paid 17-18M a year, and then come to camp looking like a friggin blimp, then lose your job to the rookie and wind up messing your shoulder up, Probably related in some way to being in such bad shape, certainly doent earn you a shot at 3b before these guys. I dont think shaw needs a fire lit under him. Hes still young and still making adjustments. He may never end up being more than a streaky 260 hitter with 25 bombs. Kinda like Napoli. Maybe that means sticking with him even after a couple months of underperformance. Let him work out of it while the rest of the team is good enough to carry a couple guys. Farrell didnt. The only RHHs out of the bunch is Hill and Hernandez. One should make the PO roster. I say Hernandez.
-
Vaz looking solid so far today. Struck out 1st AB but made him throw 10 pitches. Work the count really good. Smokes a line drive double down the LF line his 2nd AB. Looks good on D so far. Getting a couple call strikes with good framing through four innings...I sure hope Farrell wakes up and starts playing him more. Especially if his bat is going to be productive when Leon has like three hits his last 30 something ABs. This is also not a knock on Leon. I really like him, and I want a Vaz/Leon Tandum if possible. I just want Vaz as the main guy.

The good thing about having to pay certain guys is that we can. Not a lot of teams will even approach a 189M payroll like the Sox will...And be willing to go over it. Soon the LT should be at or around 200M. You have to trade young prospects sometimes. Its just part of the game. Even really good ones depending on whats going on in the organization. The trade has to be whats best for the organization. The Goal for every organization regarding trades is to get the best possible value back in return. DD seems pretty good at this. Kimbrel has been a good move. pomeranz was needed and looks to be a good/smart move, even if Espi works out. Bringing up Benintendi. Holding on to certain prospects/young players. Good draft getting Groome. So Id say hes done really well so far overall. I didnt like that they didnt sign Lester to what couldve been a 22M/5-6 year deal at the time. He is still going to be worth what the Cubs gave him into his mid 30s IMHO. I think Price has adjusted to his new team and will end up earning his pay. FA is always going to cost more, so 30M is fair for an Ace is todays MLB. Thats why locking up Lester was so important. We probably couldve had Lester and Porcello for 42M rather than 50M with Price. There is always those certain vets that your going to have to pay, including your own home grown talent when/if the time comes. Eventually your going to have to pay some of these guys. Thats just part of it. Unless your the Rays or Athletics of course. But were not The trick is to identify those in your own system and lock them up early if possible and your payroll allows.. Not all moves/deals will work out. But Between good drafting, development, trades/FA, and also figuring in injuries and underperformance that always happens, theres a lot going on for a Prez of Baseball ops and a GM to juggle. Theres always going to be deals that go wrong and prospects that dont work out, etc. you just have do more good than bad. Not easy, but I like who we have in the FO running thins right now.
