I'm not sure what mvp's theory is for who makes the baseball decisions. Somebody has to make 'em, we know that much.

Well, my speculation is that Bloom is the guy who blueprints all the team construction stuff, and everyone else is working within those blueprints, so the input Bloom gets is going to be about the kind of moves that fit into his philosophy. So it's not just the final say that's his, it's the underlying plans.

I don't know any way we could possibly determine whether fans are more collectively pissed off or not. Last year's team was playing like crap before the deadline, and perhaps unworthy of being improved. This year's team was playing pretty well but obviously needed some pitching help. I'm kind of pissed off but I'm also puzzled. I don't understand exactly how this front office thinks. The team seems to be headed in the right direction, but they also keep doing things that make you grind your teeth.

It's my educated guess that Bloom makes most of the decisions on the big team's player acquisitions and dispositions, subject of course to the payroll budget imposed by Henry. I'm sure Bloom receives a lot of information and opinions from others in the organization before making those decisions, but he has the final call. You mentioned something you had read about Bloom being much more consultative than DD was, to the point that maybe Bloom considered the input of others too much. That aligns with the process I'm describing.

Believe it or don't, but the Mets are actually saying they're not going to be all in on 2024. Cohen seems to have seen the light in a hurry. Trading Scherzer and Verlander when they were both under contract for next year makes it appear they're not kidding about this.

To me, doing nothing at this deadline and staying $10 million or so under the tax threshold for 2023 feels like the Sox front office giving the fans the middle finger one more time. "Crybaby fans", I guess I should say.

Hard to say. Ben was sort of the natural in-house replacement for Theo. Plus they spent plenty in the pre-2015 offseason, so you might say that was when the patience ran out.

We're talking about who is primarily responsible for roster construction. If that man for the Red Sox is not Chaim Bloom, it's a major news flash.

You said Bloom's "main task is running the whole organization by managing the GM and other people in upper level management". What the hell does that even mean? It sounds like something from a business administration course.

Sounds like bafflegab to me. Is constructing the MLB team's roster a huge part of Chaim's job or not?

It's potentially a good trade. Seems a little early to pronounce it a great trade. The guy was available for a reason.

To me the incredible thing about how the Sox FO has handled this season is staying $11 million under the tax cap (per Cot's). Seems indefensible considering that they increased ticket prices. Shows balls, though, I guess.
