I think the point is that the entire league would not have left Ortiz sitting on the scrap heap. Pedro gave the Sox an early warning and an opportunity to get him before the rest of the league got cranked up. He was available for next to nothing. Everybody has next to nothing that they can come up with to spend for a guy and any number of teams would have taken that shot.
I think it is hard to believe we would have ended up with Ortiz were it not for Pedro. Think about that one for minute and when your heart comes back out of your throat take yourself a shot of some good scotch and say a little prayer.
I wonder if the rest of the league finds our guys, Jerry and Don as objectionable as we find most of theirs'. I have to think everybody everywhere just cannot stand Bucknife and McCarvedup...maybe with the exception of New York fans since they tend to gush whenever discussing the Yankee turds.
Anyway not really looking forward to seeing the Sox return to ML baseball from AAA by making the trip from Minn. to Chicago. White Sox are not Tigers, Yankees or Rangers but they are surely a truer test than Twins. Whites Sox are a good representative for the second tier in this league.
At least we have Doubront and Bard going. Those two and Beckett are the only guys I am really that confident in right now.
I will say that this is a seven year deal for a player that makes money in large part with his speed/legs. There is no guarantee that he turns into Johnny Damon or any part of Johnny Damon later in his career.
CC has already blown away year one of his overblown contract playing like a September call up (that is eventually sent back down) and will now have blown away maybe as much as a third of this season before he even lifts a bat. So that leaves him with 4 2/3 years the back end of which he will clearly not be as speedy as he is today with no guarantees what so ever that he will enjoy an associated increase in power.
If he comes back to form which will take a bit of time best case, I will be saying that with the 4 2/3 years he has left at the end of the day he might return $70-85M worth of value against his $142M contact while painting the Sox into an ugly corner with regard to any chance that they might have to sign Ells when he gets to free agency. Boras has got the CC contract to look at and shove right down the Sox throats when the time comes. So that is what I will be saying! How does sound...does that sound appealing? Does that sound like something you would like to repeat?
The only consolation for me with the Bruins is that you could tell they were not going anywhere this year. I kept wishful thinking and hoping but a few key injuries down the stretch really hurt them and Thomas frankly gave up to many soft goals including one tonight. He gave up none last year.
NESN nitwits..."lets get to the good news from the bullpen"
and what would that be
- Padilla to the DL
- Tazawa apparently in V's doghouse or something
- V bringing in Atch to get out of a jam and pitch to the two best LH hitters the Twins have when he is clearly not that kind of relief pitcher
- Thomas near decapitating somebody
- Aceves still clearly throwing instead of pitching having only had two occasions so far when you could call what he is doing out there pitching
Is that the good news from the pen the NESN boys want to talk about?
Not only has he been overthrowing but he has on occasion also been aiming the ball. Like he does not ever seem to find that spot in between where he is not aiming and not overthrowing.
I don't know if they should bring Padilla out again or not. I think they will likely put him on the shelf after tonight after seeing him grimace like that. How can they trust him against a real baseball team. The last time he actually pitched with that injury against a real baseball team he got crushed.
I can't tell anymore what V will or will not do with this wreckage of a pen.
There is something wrong with Padilla...the Sox never reported his groin as healed and he already missed one turn for it...when he took the ball the last time he was still hurting and he is obviously still hurting tonight.
Atch was the first mistake. No idea what Atch was doing out there. Mauer and Morneau are really all the Twins have. What is this....a hunch a night for V?
