This could be a long road trip... The A's currently are in pole position for one of the WC spots and even the Mariners, the worst of the 4 teams in the AL W, have a better record than us atm... http://www.talkceltic.net/forum/images/smilies/54.gif On the bright side, it's almost September, so the expanded roster might see a few youngsters get a run out & we can gauge some new blood.

Watched the Mariners@Twins yesterday... Had to feel a bit sorry for Liam Hendriks, who also threw a complete game (as did Hernandez), yet lost 1-0 to King Felix.

I might not be the most knowledgeable Red Sox fan in the world - it's a bit hard to stay completely up to date from over here in Scotland - but why would Bobby V have a player batting less than .200 in the clean up spot? :dunno:

Are you serious? This must just about be the first game this season where he has lasted 6 inning. Just based on this season going into today he has an ERA of over 6 and a 0-3 record, even overlooking how injury prone he is. Yeah, it's been a quality start today, but am far from convinced that there is any sort of future at Fenway for Dice-K.

lol, Ferdinand's a defender, so his job is to stop goals being scored, but that's neither here nor there, lol. The point is, I was using that case as an example of how serious this issue is taken by sports elsewhere compared to the relative slap on the wrist that baseball issues. It's not just in football (soccer), there are countless examples I could provide to demonstrate the point in any number of professional - and amateur - sports.

Personally, I think MLB would benefit from being brought into line with the World Anti Doping Agency's standards, including punishments and suspensions for athletes that are found to be in breach. As Divinity pointed out, he went from a .255 to .346 hitter, so it's unlikely that this is an isolated case, rather just the first time he has been caught - and for that he misses roughly 1/3 of a season, whereas in other sports athletes can find themselves out for 2 years or more. Rio Ferdinand of Manchester United (& the former England soccer captain) was once suspended for 8 months for simply missing a drugs test!

Is it the quality of pitching has improved over the decades, or that Williams completed the feat before there was integration and the overall standard rose accordingly? If this is the case, then surely the overall standard of hitters should have equally of this level, no? Noting those that achieved the feat in the 20th century, it is interesting to note that when the 'dead ball' era came to a close and (dare I say it) Ruth started clobbering, which lead to so many others swinging for the fence, that there were fewer that were able to hit at such a clip that is needed to maintain a .400 average? Is everything, including average, now all secondary to the ability to hit bombs?

It has been over 70 years since Ted Williams hit .406 in 1941 - the last man to finish with a .400 season average. Will this feat ever be repeated? Has the modern game made this figure impossible? If it were to be done, what is the 'x' factor that no other major league hitter has failed to find ever since to replicate this?

So far as the pitching goes, last night's performance by Buchholz had me thinking that perhaps toying with the idea of a 5 1/2 starting rotation - the 1/2 being a 6th starter who, if there is a rest day drops from the rotation, if that makes sense. I've not looked into the stats or anything, but the guys seem to have that little extra zip on their fastballs etc if they get that one day off extra. Could improve all concerned. Just an idea.

Nice defensive play to cut Gonzalez's line drive. Schwing!!! With Big Pappi getting hold of that one, it could have been 3-0 but for that play. Ortiz must just about be dea0-set certain for the All Stars voting.

Looking forward to this one. Don't get to see many Red Sox games live here in the UK - think this is just the 2nd or 3rd time this season.
