Yesterday, Farrell was quoted saying the organization doesn't see Bradley as a left fielder. Today, Bradley played left field for 1/2 of the game. After the game, Farrell said the organization changed their mind on Bradley playing left field. Got to think this means they're seriously considering starting him out with the big club in NY. My guess is that they start him out with Boston, and when Ortiz gets back, they make their decision. If he's still playing well, you keep him up. If he's struggling, you send him down and get his 20 days in.

Great. And last year, they would have called the A's and the Orioles a mess. And in 2011, they would have called the Red Sox a masterpiece. And in 2010, they would have called the Padres a mess. And in 2009, they would have called the Rockies a mess. And in 2008, they would have called the Rays a mess. Point being. That doesn't bother me at all. Especially since this is an NL pitcher who has zero insight with the Red Sox anyway. I can't wait for this team to surprise a lot of people. Including a lot of people on this thread and in Boston.

I don't get it. Every single team needs SP depth. The Yankees have Phelps, but nothing after that. Hell, if the Sox have a couple guys go down, at least they still have both Webster and Aceves who can step in while a guy like Morales gets back into condition. It's not as if we don't have a #6, #7, or #8 starter right now. Morales is already back into a throwing program. People are all freaked out because he has a bit of a bulging disc. Well, so did Hughes. Nobody said "Oh the Yankees are done. They have no SP depth and Hughes has a bulging disc. Cashman is an idiot". Hell. We have 5 starters and 2 solid depth options right now, and we're in trouble?!? It's just so damn hypocritical.

According to BBRef, Boesch hasn't played a single professional baseball game at 1B. Minors or majors.

League Average AL SS in 2012: .671 OPS. To say that Iglesias can't develop into a league average (.300 OBP/.370 SLG) hitter is a bit obtuse. You're very delusional in what you believe the requirement is to be a starting MLB player, and the progressions that players make.

Right now? Yes. But that certainly doesn't mean he can't develop into a league average (offensively speaking) catcher. Just to be clear, here are the league average production numbers for AL Catchers over the past few years: 2012: .242/.310/.397 2011: .237/.304/.389 2010: .243/.311/.372 League average offensive production is horrendous for catchers. That's why Russell Martin was able to put up a .713 OPS last year and still get 2 year/$17mm deal. Defense behind the dish is extremely valuable.

Looks like Drew may be on the shelf to start the season. It's a good thing that Iglesias has come out swinging with some conviction this year. Makes the sting of losing Drew much less. Not saying he's going to replicate Drews offensive production, but if he can drive a few balls and play elite elite defense in his absence, I don't see a massive drop off

Most, if not all teams stash their SP depth at AAA, I don't see how having Webster there causes a problem?

Not saying it will ever happen, but if the Sox ever roll out Vazquez at C, Iggy at SS, Pedroia at 2B, and Bradley in CF, that could/would be the best defense up the middle that I've ever seen on one team.

When he was 20, he was a sophomore at South Carolina. He's 22, turns 23 on 4/19.

To be fair, each player is different. If the Sox thought that Bradley would hit .117 for a month, this wouldn't even be a consideration because it's partly replacing Ortiz's offensive production. Not his power, but at least having someone out there that can get on base and play elite D, bring other aspects to the game. If they thought he was just going to bomb for a month, then I don't think they'd even think about this.

And just to be clear, that's an aggregate 20 days over the 6 seasons until he reaches FA. That's not 20 days this year, or 20 days in succession.

Not to mention that Victorino can't hit RHP very well, either. I said it in another thread (or maybe this one, a while ago). If Gomes plays 90 games in LF, Victorino plays 140 in RF, and Ellsbury plays 145 in CF, that's 110 games right there that Bradley plays. And that's assuming health for each of the 3 OF. The season is 24 weeks long after removing the ASB, so he's essentially playing 9 games every two weeks to get in 110 games/season.

Guys - I think something we're all missing here is this: "Yet, even if he starts with the big club prior to April 12 and ends up spending the 20 or more days in the minors, free agency eligibility won’t come until after ’19." So, if Ortiz is out, there is always the option to bring up Bradley, then send him back to Pawtucket the day Ortiz gets back, leave him there for 20 days while this lineup doesn't need the extra stick, and then bring him back up once he's fulfilled that 20 days in the minors. That would both allow us to start out the season with him, have him up here while Ortiz is out for the entirety of his leave, and still not lose a year of control.

So of those 9 games, he would miss 6 vs a LH SP, 3 vs a RH SP. Call him up on the 12th, the schedule works out in his favor.

-Dempster worked 4IP, 1 ER. Got into a bit of a jam early on but was able to pitch out of it. -Bard threw an inning. First 2 reached, but then a K, FO, and GO got him out of it. -In the 8th, the Twins had the bases juiced. Someone flew out to short CF (Bradley). The runner on 3rd bluffed, and Bradley thought he would so he threw behind the runner and nearly picked him off at 3rd. -Middlebrooks crushed a would be grand slam but the wind kept it in and he hit a bases clearing wall ball double. That's about all I picked up on. I was in and out of the game at work listening to the Twins broadcast, could well have missed something.

You gotta remember, we're talking 6 years down the road here. Not 2013. This is 2019. Look at what BJ Upton got this year. 5/75? And his wOBA isn't close to what Bradley's projects to be. These salaries are only going to increase. This obviously is all predicated on Bradley turning into a very good player.

I understand that. And I'm giving him a Scott Boras deal. 7/140? That's about right for a 15 HR, 25 SB, .300/.385/.450 hitter.

I am very excited about him, I'll admit that. But I also think this is a team that shouldn't let dollars in 2019 get between putting the best team on the field for 162 games. I understand that we would get an extra year from him if we keep him out until May 6th (or whatever that magic date is), but at the same time, that also pushes his FA year back by a year, which affects us in 2019 if/when we decide to try to give him an extension. I think the monetary value is being overhyped a bit. Would you rather pay him $6mm extra in 2019, or pay him $20mm at the age of 36 instead of 35?

My point is that they can extend him and, rather than paying him at the age of 36, they'll be paying him at the age of 23.

This is not a cash strapped team. If Bradley is going to be the elite player that he's projecting to be, he will likely be making ~12-14mm in his final year of arbitration. If he gets a 7 year contract at ~18-20mm/year, you're only out 6-8mm total, and you're cutting his contract off at 35 rather than 36, which is incredibly beneficial for the team, even at a cost of $8mm.
