When you go that much money for that many years, there's always a risk. But until there is a major change in the financial structure of the league, this is pretty much business as usual. -
I have no objection to Blyleven, Bagwell, Martinez and Olerud. In general, though, I think too many very good (and not great) players are getting in.

Does anyone out there buy a jersey the minute someone signs? How's that Dice-K jersey working out for ya? Or buy their rookie card or something? I think I'm going to buy a Gonzalez bat card, and maybe a Crawford jersey card.

So take the deal and just retire when you want to call it quits. At least you are guaranteed more jack than you'd get after baseball elsewhere.

Why would he refuse guaranteed money, especially for years when he may not be worth a damn? All he has to do is show up and go through the motions for a paycheck. I would totally do that if I was him. Only question is whether Nationals and Anaheim (and Boston??) are serious enough to push it at least to 8 years.

So looking on the bright side: AGon and his agent go back on their word, we have one year of AGon plus two picks for three prospects. That's not terrible. And before anyone jumps on me, I'm not saying this will happen, just that we have some protection if it does.

In the context of today's contracts, 6/150 isn't terrible since HorseFace got more than that.

I'd like to see more protection for teams laying out contracts, also a maximum put in place for no more than 5 years for hitters and 3 for pitchers. I want to go even further and do away with guaranteed contracts. Of course the players union will never go for it, but screw them.

I have major reservations if nothing is signed. There's nothing then to stop AGon extorting the Red Sox for more money, or playing the FA market after (presumably) lighting Fenway up for a season. Some years ago there was a case of someone who went back on a handshake deal, I can't remember who it was.
