  1. Maybe it worked out well in the end for the Nats, but two of those guys were top 50 prospects. The equivalent haul from the Red Sox was Bogaertz and Bradley. That's a steep price to pay for a guy who had a 4.20 ERA outside of Oakland. If put in the same situation again, I would still avoid Gio, and pick up Buerhle. Picking up no one is the problem here.
  2. Pretty much everyone who was available last year was available against this year, except for Gio, and Gio Gonzalez would have cost Bogaertz, Bradley and Ranaudo--maybe more. The real problem is that when those players were all available again this year, the Red Sox took a pass.
  3. The big name SP are never out there. You have to overpay in prospects or in money. No easy decision there, but the Red Sox should have gone the money route. 13 million for Haren? 15 million for Mccarthy? 24 million for Guthrie? I get that those destinations may be better fit for the players, but you need to overpay your pitchers, not your hitters, so maybe offering a couple more million than the next guy should have been the plan there.
  4. I read that the other day as well, but it sounded like it was a hypothetical, and not based on any facts or knowledge of the insurance policy. I thought that insurance companies simply don't insure players after 3-4 years of a contract because they'd almost always get burned.
  5. Reports have said that the Phillies aren't interested in trading Lee, and they already filled their center field spot.
  6. The pitching situation has gone very poorly. Most of the reasonably priced pitchers have already come off the board.
  7. Welcome back!
  8. Yeah, its crazy. I read a statistic today-- Uehara has the best K:BB ratio of any player with 100+ innings. All time.
  9. I don't know what Ben's plan is, but he's shouldn't be missing out on decent deals like that one. The options are running very low -- mostly NL West pitchers who will get hammered in the ALE now.
  10. If Ben pays Victorino 3/40 and Seattle gets Hamilton for 3/60 that would be sad
  11. Is it just me, or is it really obnoxious when people put up signatures about how awesome they are?
  12. More whining from Lord Snow. It would be one thing if he actually defended his argument, but it seems like people constantly are making very good arguments and his response is more whining and bitching.
  13. The meeting with Hamilton was on Monday night. This should be a nonstory.
  14. I would love to see Santana here. He's had some injury issues, but the guy is a stonecold ace, and the equivalent of a Verlander/Weaver. Everything about him makes me believe he'll be worth the risk in 2013.
  15. I would still be interested in a Ellsbury for Holland trade. What ever happened to that one?
  16. I don't think so. That would give the Red Sox with 3/4 elite center fielders, and only two places to put them.
  17. The Red Sox should have taken him off the Angel's hands when they hand the chance.
  18. Not true. He turned 32 last week, he'll be playing his 32/33/34 seasons here. So basically, even in the last year of his contract he'll be younger than the average Yankee.
  19. I was actually looking eyeballing it, and looking at the last three years only. Maybe cherrypicking a bit, but the difference was large enough that I assumed the career numbers were similar. Since 2009, Ellsbury's success rate is 76% compared to Victorino's 86% -- that was what I was basing that statement on.
  20. Congrats to our old friend Scutaro. Good to see a gritty, hardworking and selfless player get a great contract on a team that is happy to have him.
  21. Ellsbury's career -- .297/.349/.442/.791 1 gold glove Victorino's career --275/.341/.430/.771 3 gold gloves If Victorino is so terrible then so is Ellsbury. Except wait... Victorino is a better base stealer. He's a better defender. He will cost about 90 million dollars less. And he isn't a complete pussy who gets a new owie every week.
  22. Clearly you know absolutely nothing about Victorino, and have been ignoring the discussion about what makes him a better than advertised player.
  23. The Red Sox can't afford to give long contracts to guys like Jackson/Lohse/Dempster who will fail hard in the AL East. The number of available starting pitching has significantly dried up already. The list gets longer every day: Burhle, Josh Johnson, Guthrie, Ervin Santana, Hanson, Haren Kuroda, Peavy Baker, Pettite
  24. Johan Santana has been a had an ERA around 2.8-3.33 for his entire career. He had an injury issue at the end of this year at which point his stats fell off a cliff, but he's probably the best pitcher available if he's recovered from his should issue.
