    KC absolutely made the right choice. I'm not debating that. But the stats from last offseason were much closer than they are right now.

    I don't seriously expect XB to come up and rake. I just happen to think he is a significant upgrade over the guys at 3B right now.

    After the end of 2012... career numbers for these guys : Shields ERA 3.89, WHIP 1.223, ERA+ 107, K/9 7.7. Age 32. Pitching in the Trop his entire career. Lester ERA 3.76, WHIP 1.306, ERA+ 119, K/9 8.2. Age 29. Pitching in Fenway his entire career. Call me a homer, but I don't think there is a huge difference in the pitchers in 2012. What Shields made up for in innings, Lester makes up for in youth and park factors. The major sticking point would have been the poor performance from Lester in 2012, and it seemed like everyone in baseball thought he had very obvious mechanical flaws that were probably fixable outside of the Valentine circus.

    If Garza netted the Cubs Olts and Edwards... I'm not completely convinced Lester won't still be worth a solid prospect next offseason. Especially since he is almost a complete lock for an extra draft pick at the end of 2014.

    I don't think I have ever agreed so heartedly with one of your posts. Spot on in about ten different ways. Why couldn't they have suspended him in a year when he was actually benefiting from the steroids, like... oh I don't know, 2009.

    Here were the remaining needs of the Red Sox at the trade deadline. 1) A middle of the order bat who could protect Ortiz. 2) a quality RHH hitter. 3) A player who could field 3B. Hey! We have one of those guys sitting in the minors. It'll happen, I just don't think anyone knows when yet -- even the front office types.

    So far he has pitched 7, 7.1 and 8 innings with the Rangers, totalling an ERA of 2.82. Still not worth Mike Olt, but it looks like the Rangers might be in good shape to catch Oakland.

    It just seems like a strange thing to have evidence on. Refer a friend, get a free needle from Biogenesis! We just need to record you saying " I'm Alex Rodriguez, and I like recruiting my friends to steroids" on this tape recorder here. "Cooperating offenders" probably gave sworn statements, but can you really trust guys who have already lied to our faces? As a Red Sox fan, you should know by now that the Yankees are above the rules in baseball. Gold gloves awarded to a guy who hasn't defended well in a decade. Rivera's notoriously massive strikezone. But just because they're above the rules in baseball, doesn't mean they're above law.

    I actually agree with him here. It does seem like the Yankees and MLB have been doing whatever they can to absolve the Yankees of everything they owe. Why else make an example about an over-the-hill cripple whose career is probably over anyway? Maybe the MLB was just looking for a scape-goat that absolutely no one likes, or maybe the idea is that the Yankees are good for baseball. It doesn't seem fair to give A-rod significantly more time than the other offenders. The only entity that is on A-rod's side right now is the insurance company that the Yankees hired for his contract. The sole reason A-rod is playing tomorrow is because he forced the Yankee's hands with public comments about his health, and things could get messy with insurance fraud or some other legality.

    I doubt the Red Sox will go big on C/1B. If they do go for McCann, I think they'll want to split his bat between C and 1B, alternating Lavs/Ross and Nava/Carp at those positions, with Vazquez and Brentz in the minors as depth. Personally, I bet they go with Salty/Morales or Salty/Napoli at first next year.

    I don't agree that the Red Sox need several bullpen arms. The only current RP free agent is Uehara, and I seriously doubt they'll let him go unless he retires. Taz, Miller, Breslow are under contract. They'd probably want to add one more guy for the bullpen, but they have a lot of depth beyond that. The Sox's farm system and depth has been overflowing. For SP/RP options they have Morales, Wilson, Britton, RDLR, Wright, Workman, Ranaudo, Webster all for low salaries. If Buchholz is healthy, they have another arm available as well. Assuming they don't trade a pitcher, they're probably around 130 million. That's 50 million under the cap. Unless they make a serious run at one of the high-cost players, they have plenty of room.

    The payroll next year will definitely still be flexible. Even with Pedroia's new deal, and Peavy, they're losing 10 million on Drew, 7 million on Hanrahan, 4 million on Bailey. The 10 million they spent on Ellsbury this year could go straight back to him. Plus, if they go deep into the playoffs, they'll pull a good amount of money back in to reinvest, and might be worth to surpass the luxury tax again (which goes up 10+ million anyway). All that being said, I see them giving him a qualifying offer, and moving on since there are already 2 other solid CF options in the organization.

    The Red Sox are heading to Houston to face the Astros. In the first game John Lackey faces Oberholtzer... the only guy in the majors who could could beat Lackey in an ugliest face competition. Astros offense -- 415 runs ( 14th in AL). Astros pitching -- 576 runs allowed (30th in major leagues). Red Sox run differential + 101 runs. Astros run differential -161 runs. Oh, and Houston just traded its ace and closer. I don't care, need World Series. Just win!

    Terrible? That's a bit of hyperbole. OPS is the best starting point for a more complex discussion of the offensive value of a player. It isn't perfect --especially for small sample sizes -- but all good hitters have good OPS's over their careers. .700/.800/.900/1.000 marks will show you exactly how good a hitter is.
