    Remember when Lavarnway hit 34 home runs between AA, AAA and Boston in 2011? Sometimes skills don't necessarily translate. Napoli is a sure thing, and that is key here.

    At this point, does anyone think a QO would be a bad idea? Unless BC has a hardon for Abreu, the offer is a no-brainer.

    Buch is 11-0. The most wins ever for an undefeated pitcher was 12 (although 3 were from relief appearances). If he wins two more he could make history.... only possible because of a long DL stint, but still a cool accomplishment.

    The rule is 45 days on the active roster (Not including September call-ups) or 50 IP pitched. I am not positive, but I do not think he has been on the roster for 45 days this season.

    What I am saying is that IF he is their guy, they can get him. Only they can make the determination on what that number will be.

    Who do you see capable of outbidding the Red Sox? Most of the top spending teams are locked in with players or have controllable players at the position. Of the top 15 spenders, only the White Sox, Rangers, Nationals and Red Sox seem like fits.

    I don't know why Red Sox would hate Mo anyway. He has a 78% save rate against Boston, so we really shouldn't have the perspective of this world-beating closer that the rest of the league does.

    Laroche is a 20 HR hitter, and I doubt the Nats want him to sit on the bench with that salary. Tex can't move to DH if Jeter (2014) and Arod (2015-) are at that position. Detroit has Vmart at DH. You didn't mention the other teams, but those are a few of the only teams who can probably afford a monster contract here. Teams don't just bend over backwards to overpay for a guy with no major league experience. If they have a spot, they'll make bids, but all of the big spenders either have players already at the position, or would have to seriously inconvenience themselves to get Abreu here.

    How many of those teams have big name 1B already though? NYY has Tex, Orioles have Davis, Nationals have Laroche. The Tigers have Fielder, the Angels have Trumbo, the Dodgers have Gonzalez, the Cubs have Rizzo. I just don't think there are many teams looking for a 1B, and the ones that are probably can't bid that high.

    I am conflicted about Salty. If they can get McCann, I say do it. The problem with Salty is that he is only 28 years old. Catchers NEVER hit free agency that early. They usually take longer to reach the big leagues, and hit free agency in their early 30s, but their legs are already gone by then. Salty is a young and healthy catcher, and for some reason I think he might be able to get 3+ years. The other factor is that Salty was shuffled around many times before giving the permanent catching job here. I think he may have some loyalty to the Red Sox for giving him a legitimate opportunity to become what he is today.

    XB is still only 20 years old. We need to see how he does in the postseason, but it might be worthwhile to let him marinate in the minors in 2014 and push his arbitration clock back a year. If Middlebrooks is ineffective, Drew/Pedroia gets hurt, or if their 1B plan doesn't pan out, they will have a very good depth option. I am also not convinced that Drew is going to want to be a backup plan in 2014, even if it is a 14 million check in his pocket. Boras will probably see this offseason as the last chance for Drew to hit it big. He'll be 31 next March, and if he loses playing time to injury or being bumped out of the lineup, he probably won't ever see a multi-year deal again, nevermind an 8 figure deal again. The reason why this year worked was because BC made smart, flexible deals that built depth. If Drew takes the QO it will be exactly that.

    The team's two biggest critics ( we all know who they are) have gone on the record saying they are happy with the season's results. If they complain about the end result, well, it is what it is.

    Logic is completely irrelevant in this case. Even so, lackey has been the team's best pitcher all year.

    I'd say Lackey first. If the Red Sox are going to score very few runs, I would rather it be against Scherzer/Price/Colon/Kuroda than whoever that team's #4 is.
