    The Rays lost about 6 in a row recently after a winning streak. That covers up the run they made. Trouble is, the Sox haven't been able to take advantage of that losing streak. They are now the team without momentum, as the Yankees are also surging--thanks to Soriano. You can't underestimate the effect of adding a hot player or two in August to revive a team. The two road trips out west have made August a challenging month. Peavy has helped, but Farrell is showing some cracks in his BP decisions. Lost the game last night. They will have to turn things around quickly out west, or they will fall behind.

    Farrell is getting criticized on the tweets for putting that wild guy in with the bases loaded--with predictable results. They are 2-5 in 1-run games since the all-star break. TB is 10-2. That's the difference. They need to look at why they aren't winning these low scoring games. One reason has to be their weak middle part of the order. Especially against LHP. After Ortiz, you have a lot of outs. They are going to have to get untracked, or they will miss the playoffs. the Yankees have recharged with Soriano. The Red Sox have not. Peavy has been good, but Farrell has a quick hook--except with Dempster.Wasted effort.

    They do everything deliberately. That's their trademark. I don't expect to see Bogaerts until they face a LHd starter--playing SS. Middlebrooks is hitting well enough right now, and Bogaerts is no improvement defensively--for what that's worth.

    Carp is a nice bench player, who can play OF or 1B. That's his role. Plus he hits LHd. Not enough power at 1B for a regular role. And just an average defensive player, at best.

    Nap is showing he's a streak hitter, strikes out a lot, low average. He isn't a major force in the middle of the lineup, where their biggest weakness is. After Ortiz, you have a lot of guys with low OBP except for Nava, who isn't a power hitter. Bogaerts and Middlebrooks could be saviors here--especially against LHP. But it has taken them too long to bring them up. These guys have both been hot in AAA the past month or so. They could have helped earlier when the team was floundering against LHP. Soriano or Reynolds could have helped, but Cashman beat them to the punch. If they don't make the playoffs, these missed opportunities will be remembered.

    Lester is fine. One bad start showing there. Every pitcher has a stinker every 4 or 5 starts. I doubt he's the same pitcher of a few years back, but he's good enough. Being LHd helps.

    What's this about Dempster having a drinking problem? He belongs in the bullpen, anyways. Was Cubs closer for several years. He certainly didn't belong pitching against NY the 3rd game of that series. The braintrust on the Red Sox (if you want to call it that) has to stop thinking about the future, because the future is now. For example, they should have recognized their weakness against LHP much sooner, as was pretty obvious, and done something about it. Instead, they sat on their heels and let the Yankees get Soriano and Reynolds. Is Gomes better than Soriano? Not against LHP. In this situation, you think 2 months--not next year. And then there's the obvious platoon situation at SS, with Drew hitting around .200 against LHP. Bogaerts waiting in the wings... and waiting. When it comes to aggressiveness and timing, Cashman runs rings around Cherington, who probably needs five alarm clocks to wake up in the morning.

    Those SOB Rays are now 10-2 in one run games since the all-star break. The Red Sox are 2-4. These things are supposed to even out. My feeling is speed and defense are factors. The Red Sox are way down in defense.

    I got a tip on twitter a couple of days ago from a beat writer Bogaert's promotion was imminent. Maybe they waited a bit too long, as is their way, but I see he has been called up. My advice is to get on twitter if you want first hand information.

    Does the Red Sox braintrust really want to win this year? You have to wonder after throwing Dempster out there against the Yankees instead of holding him for SF--in the NL, where he has been more effective. And then making ARod the focus instead of winning the game. It's about winning.

    What a bunch of dopes starting Dempster in a game like this. Everybody knows he sucks. You just knew it was going to be an 11-10 game.

    here's a stat for ya: TB 9-2 in 1-run games since all-star break. 3-0 in 2-1 games. Red Sox 2-4, 0-1 in 2-1 games.

    The infield picture isn't clear next year beyond Pedroia. They've got Cecchini at 3B and that other kid Marrero? at SS. Bogaerts and Middlebrooks. Figure Bogaerts SS, Middlebrooks 3B or 1B.

    I hope so. Him in the lineup with Vic and Ells changes their speed/defense makeup. Too many plodders in that lineup right now.

    Bogaerts callup is imminent. Probably next week, which makes him eligible for playoffs. Middlebrooks working out at 1B, which means he may play 3B. Can't believe he won't play SS against LHP, though.

    Can't help but think that all this ARod hoopla is about the Yankees getting out of his $100 million contract. That's how powerful they are.

    None of that clubhouse stuff has anything to do with anything. The media doesn't know anything about the clubhouse. I remember Schilling talking about this a while back. It was never about chicken and beer, in my view. Chemistry isn't about the clubhouse--it's about players knowing their roles on the field and having talents which mesh together--complement each other. It's up to the management to get those players and tell them their roles. That's what made Auerbach of the Celtics great. He knew how to do that. It's a mystery why the Red Sox folded that September a couple of years ago. Though their fundamentals and their managing were sloppy at the time. Letting guys steal bases, for example. There was hubris. Lack of discipline. And their starting pitching fell apart--which was probably the major reason. Last year, it was obvious--they sold off three of their stars, and got nobody of immediate use in return. Then Ortiz got hurt. Plus their management was not all swimming in the same direction. That ended it.
