  1. CBS Sports says "Red Sox slip past O's despite Davis 47th homer" (see headlines on right). http://www.cbssports.com/ It should have said, "Red Sox rally to beat Os". What you get instead is the NY spin. Ha. I should add one CBS writer (Snyder) has the Red Sox as no.1 in MLB power rankings today. You get all types at CBS. Well deserved recognition out of NY.
  2. Koji is a legitimate CY candidate. It's time the media recognized that. The network types have been paying scant attention to the Red Sox, who have spent most of the year in first place.
  3. As of August 28, 2011, Red Sox were 82-51, 1st place, 2 games up on Yankees. A bit ahead of this years' pace(79-55). They won 8 of their final 29 games, finishing out of the playoffs. We still don't really know why that happened--except the pitching went sour. Nobody expects it to happen again. This is a different team. But it's a reminder of what can happen. The division races can be changed in September by teams turning hot or cold.
  4. Koji is a serious contender for the Cy. Those guys at MLB TV need to wake up.
  5. Interesting 60% voted not to sign Ells. I can see why. Bora$ is one reason. I don't see why JBJ can't play CF. Trouble is, this FO may have a different mindset. They may re-sign both Ells and Drew for big bucks--both Bora$ clients. Drew is hitting .300 after the all-star break. That would effectively block Bogaerts at SS. Maybe they see Bogaerts at 3B and Middlebrooks at 1B. In LF, you figure JBJ, but what about Gomes/Nava?
  6. Neither one of those guys is worth $20 mil. And I doubt they will get it--except maybe from the Dodgers. LOL. They are better off putting Bradley at center, and Nava/Gomes in left. What they could use is some consistent power behind Ortiz in the middle of the order. Like a Manny in his prime. The middle part of their order sucks. Nava isn't a no.5. Napoli is inconsistent. Middlebrooks is a work in progress. Salty? no.
  7. Schilling's major role in winning championships is all that's important. Nothing else matters.
  8. Beating the Dodgers 2 out of 3 in LA will give them a boost. This team won't fold. The pitching is good. Peavy is one of your playoff starters, for sure.
  9. http://www.nytimes.com/pages/todayspaper/index.html On the subject of TVs influence on sports, there is a front page article in the NY Times this morning on ESPN's control of college football scheduling--to make up their TV scheduling of games. It's been evident to me for quite a while that the TV networks have a big hand in MLB, NFL and NBA scheduling as well. Seems logical since the bulk of team and league revenues these days comes from TV. The downside is that there is an obvious emphasis on the biggest markets--NY and LA. The teams from those markets seem to get showcased for high profile TV games more than the other teams. The reason is those cities comprise about 25% of the sports TV market, and command higher advertising rates due to their market size. The impact of the TV media on sports is not a subject that gets discussed on ESPN and the other sports channels, or on the internet, for obvious reasons. The sports journalists and pundits are a part of the media.- and often the TV media.
  10. I think Lester benefits from a good defensive catcher like Ross, who frames pitches much better than Salty--who keeps his glove in the middle of the plate. Doubront's last start, I watched Salty frame a pitch right down the middle. Doubront threw it right into his glove--and the batter hit it for a HR. In a word, that's Salty's problem, aside from being very slow behind the plate due to his size. It's a shame-- he's an above average hitter for a catcher.
  11. I think you have to be careful about getting ahead of the game. We haven't yet seen what they will do with the rotation when Buchholz returns. You have to be especially concerned about Dempster. He's one of the moneys, and we have no idea what their thinking is on him. Logically, he should go to the bullpen, where he might be a good backup for Uehara, since he has closed for the Cubs in the past. But that's logically. I would add that Tazawa has not looked great lately in the setup role--throwing a lot of hangers and not focusing enough on his heat. Dempster could fill in there as well.
  12. Nice at bat. Went with the pitch. Smart instincts.
  13. I was just saying that to my wife, watching Farrell talking out Lester for no good damn reason. Damn managers, if they weren't managing, most of them would be sweeping floors.
  14. Yeah--they need to lose some games. They are getting arrogant like the Yankees. So are their fans.
  15. Uehara MVP. The guy throws about 5 different pitches for strikes. Amazing. Farrell almost blows it taking out Lester. The ump refused to give him strike 3 against Crawford--three straight pitches around the strike zone. Why take him out with a shutout? 101 pitches? Lester was pissed when the Dodgers got those two runs. Isn't it time Tazawa got a rest? He isn't the same pitcher he was earlier. I won't talk about Ells. There are enough brainfarts to go around lately.
  16. Bogaerts should be playing against both. And Papi should be playing 1B. But this team is so cautious personnel wise you'll be lucky if you see Bogaerts in one game. They missed the boat, by the way on Hanley, whom they could have had for almost nothing from the Marlins. They just didn't want to pay his contract--or take a chance on him. You can't be too cautious.
  17. The Yankees are just licking their chops.
  18. When Salty is batting 5th, you know you're in trouble. Weak middle of the lineup.
  19. You have to search far and wide to find any reference to what the differences are between steroids and HGH. In terms of the effect on players. We know what happens with power. But what about pitching? I heard Clemens took them because he could come back quicker from injury or soreness from his last start. And which was it they were taking? Probably steroids earlier when there was no testing--and they weren't aware of the side effects--all those muscle and hip problems. After urine testing started, there was probably a shift to HGH, which can't be detected in urine--you need a blood test, and even there the stuff is out of your system within the hour. That's why it's really tough to catch cheating. And prove it. Guys have to make a mistake. Or they leave a paperwork trail, which is happening now with Braun, ARod and the rest.
  20. Since the late 90s, I would say that, for anyone who hit over 50 HRs, the burden of proof is on them to show they didn't use steroids or HGH.
  21. Iglesias, by the way, is hitting .302 in 19 games for the Tigers, OPS .708. Not bad. 50/50 he's the AL all-star SS next year.
  22. Watching this game on MLB TV, Drew is in the lineup because he is 11 for 33 lifetime against Zito. He did get one good stroke first time up--hitting one out just foul. Then flied out. Middlebrooks then hit one out for a HR to left--he looks good. There is hope yet for him. Next inning, Salty frames a pitch right down the middle. Doubront throws it right in his glove--and the batter hit one out for a HR! Salty frames meatballs. Next catcher please. He's a good part of the pitching problem. Doesn't frame the corners. Watch Posey. He sits on the outside corner. The result is Zito is getting outside strikes. At least a couple so far. Get your effin' glove off the middle of the plate, Salty!
  23. I think both ARod and Griffey juiced in Seattle to get their first big FA contracts. Griffey had those 50 HR seasons, then was a different player in Cincy--plagued with leg miseries which are common steroid side effects--as are the hip problems ARod has had recently. In those days, PEDs weren't tested for. Even today, HGH is very hard to detect in the blood--it's gone quickly. And it's not detected in the urine--Papi can pee every day for the testers--it don't mean a thing.
  24. Maybe the race is getting to Farrell. He did some nonsensical things last night. Not platooning at SS is more nonsense. You keep piling up bad decisions, you don't make the playoffs. Maybe Farrell needs a few days off.
  25. Check out the records since the all-star break--not just August. That would include the TB winning streak. TB: 17-11 Red Sox: 16-15 Balt: 14-14 NYY: 15-15 TB has picked up 4 games in the lost column vs Red Sox. 10 of their 17 wins have been by one run.
