  1. A RHd hitter like Werth makes more sense than Crawford, who is too much like Ellsbury and Kalish--unless they trade one of the latter two. Aside from that, I hope they have a RHd DH in the works to platoon with Ortiz. Maybe Cameron or Ordonez.
  2. Looks like Tek would be a good sign now for a couple mil. Isn't his girlfriend one of those media blondes that cover the Red Sox? Did I say cover? My guess is Scutaro plays SS next year, and Lowrie plays 3B. The leftfielder will be Werth. Yeah, I think the Pats are cheap. Look at all those all-pro defensive backs they drafted and wouldn't pay. Now they have the 2nd worse pass defense in the NFL. I wish them well, but that 8-2 record might be a bit misleading. We'll see. After all, the Jets are overrated, too. Nobody's perfect in the NFL.
  3. Amazing how much bad stuff Theo has done. I guess you have to counter it with all the good stuff. I know I wouldn't sleep nights if I had given Lackey all that money. And Beckett needs a good kick in the ass. But Theo is a clever fellow, and he'll put the puzzle together in the next few weeks. That team he assembled last year would have won 100 games without all the injuries. I wish, though, he would learn from Belichick--don't sign or re-sign anybody over 34.That means breaking those umbilical cords and upsetting Henry. One more thing, Theo. It's about pitching pitching pitching. Ask Brian Sabean. The playoffs are about pitching.
  4. Beltran, no.Another one of those bad Mets FA signings. I wouldn't deal with Sandy Alderson either. He's too smart. You won't see any more dumb FA moves by the Mets with him running the show. I'd like to see the Red Sox keep Ellsbury and Kalish, and make them both regular outfielders. Lotta speed there. And Kalish has some pop. I would be happier if Theo had let Papi walk and signed VMart, who is a very versatile player. But Theo is very creative, and has Papi for only one year. He has a few cards to deal in the next couple of weeks.
  5. Paying Papi $12.5 mil to DH against RHP next year when he's worth about $6mil isn't being cheap. In fact, I wish they had used that money to sign VMart or Beltre. You want cheap? Try the Patriots.
  6. 2018? By that time, half the season ticket holders will be in retirement homes. A good argument for not hiring young GMs.
  7. Apparently, they saw VMart as a 1B/DH for the last two years of a 4 year deal, and weren't willing to go $12 mil per year--what Papi gets for one year. OK, but who's catching next year? Salty is unproven and may not be durable. Varitek is too old. Esposito is too young. So that means they have to trade for a catcher, which costs them young talent they could use in bigger deals. The GMs job is kind of like fantasy sports. He's even using somebody else's money. You could say overpaying Papi for one year is better than overpaying VMart for maybe 2 of his 4 years. But is Lackey worth $16.5mil and Vmart not worth $12 mil? Hell no, from what we've seen of Lackey. Free agency is a killer for GMs.
  8. Beltre's problem is his two best years--by far--have been contract years. And you wonder if he can do it back to back. With Bora$$, you commit to big bucks, long years. I would not be unhappy if Lowrie got the 3rd base job, though his durability is one big question.
  9. They sign Werth, they still haven't fixed the holes at 3B and catcher. My guess is they get a fix on the latter positions before they go after an outfielder.
  10. With respect to Beltre, it's still an open field. Only the Red Sox know what they will offer, and that will depend on the other options as they develop. They can go in a few directions, and those need some time. Beltre will be around for awhlie. Even if the As offer is real, I doubt he wants to play for that team. Not a winner, and not a hitters park. He is more likely to go with the Angels, but how much will they offer? He has to also realize that Fenway is tailor made for him. It will depend on if he prefers the West coast over a good situation for him in Boston. We'll see . It's still early. The options will play out until mid December. My hunch the 3rd baseman next year will be Lowrie. Whatever the Sox do, I hope they address the holes left if they don't re-sign Beltre or Vmart. It isn't just a RHd bat they need. It's a catcher and a 3rd baseman. Saying Salty is their catcher next year is a stretch. Lowrie has the talent, but his durability is questionable.
  11. missing the catcher Esposito.
  12. Sure. Kalish is going to be a heck of a player. He and Ellsbury would do fine in a future outfield. Why spend $100 million on Crawford? Looks like Kalish will be a similar type of player. I'd be careful about Upton. He will make $14 and 15M his last two years, and he missed the last part of last season with a bad shoulder. The Sox have some great young players. Epstein has been very successful keeping them. My guess is he knows that. (Ha. I see my previous post said something different. Scratch the previous post. Keep Kalish, Theo. )
  13. I hope their priorities are bringing back Beltre and VMart, and maybe tweaking the bullpen a bit. This club, without injuries, might have won 100 games last year.
  14. As I see it, the main problem in 2010 was injuries--an inordinate number of injuries. Even with injuries to Ellsbury and Cameron, and off-years by Beckett and maybe Lackey, the Red Sox were in playoff contention until the late season injuries to Pedroia and Youks--especially Pedroia, perhaps the lifeline of the team. If I were Epstein, I'd be thinking--let's bring back last year's team--healthy. We'll probably win 100 games. That means re-signing VMart and Beltre. They had something good going--why change it.
  15. I hope this doesn't happen. Youks has been away from 3B too long to go back. He's not getting any younger and has settled in well at 1B. Lowrie deserves a shot at 3B. The only question is if he can stay healthy.
  16. Epstein needs to understand why so many injuries in '10. He built a team that might have won 100 games with normal injuries. I suspect the change in bench coaches and ST conditioning may have been factors. Doesn't the bench coach oversee the ST program?
  17. The Rangers have the inside track on Lee--if they will match the Yankees in price.
  18. So the desperate Mets overpaid for Bay at 4/66, and now eveybody is supposed to match it? That's what keeps the salary spiral moving higher.
  19. Ellsbury will be harder to deal to a smaller market team because of Boras. The DBacks would like to unload Upton's contract, and wouldn't want another big one imminent. Maybe Kalish or some of the other younger talent would be preferred. I wonder if Epstein would trade Bard for Upton. The other card here is Reynolds. Maybe a Reynolds-Upton package would get Upton for less. But Reynolds has some real batting eye problems. You could see Reynolds-Youks at either 1B or 3B.
  20. Kalish may make Ellsbury tradeable--maybe for Upton. Though it's hard to see the DBacks taking a Boras client with a contract down the road. Maybe Kalish will be the bait.
  21. Nava, no power? I saw him hit a line shot out of PNC park in Scranton Tues nite, over the RF fence to the left of the 330 sign. That one is in the RF grandstand at Fenway. .849 OPS. 10 HRs in 270 at bats. He'll do in RF or LF. Drew type of hitter. Nava, by the way, is listed as 5' 10" 200 lbs. switch hitter. Yaz was listed as 5'11" 175 lbs. The weight looks like his early weight. Similar size. Nava's minor league stats are pretty impressive.
