  1. It doesn't take "HOF" Gammons to see that Iglesias doesn't have to hit over .250 if he can play defensive all-star SS. Especially on a good hitting team. All this stuff about not hitting in a partial AAA season is overblown. He's only 21. I'd rather see him on the Red Sox bench than in Pawtucket. Reddick hit better in Boston.
  2. Doubt it. It looked like a sound business decision to me. Especially after they got Punto. Their thinking has evolved the last couple of months. They had Marco at SS and Aviles in RF when they picked up Marco's option and dealt Lowrie. That clearly has changed, though I'd still deal Lowrie for what they got. Lowrie seems to one of those guys who can't avoid injury--not uncommon in sports.
  3. Not much lost on Oswalt, who wisely stayed in the NL. He was declining as a Phillie, and had back problems off and on there. Why spend a lot of money gambling? Take the cheap route, as they are doing. They might just wait on Floyd, to see what they've got. Boras is stuck with Jackson right now, and he will have to back off his position. I doubt he will suffer much financially.
  4. The numbers just point out how senseless it was to sign Crawford. Sure, they didn't know Papi would have a comeback year and Ellsbury would turn into Kemp. But Henry cooked his own goose this year by giving Papi arbitration. No sense in crimping on the pitching to save $$, which was the weak spot last year. The pickings will be much better next year, but a one year contract right now wouldn't hurt.
  5. $5M is what Floyd will cost in salary. Looks like that is a bargaining figure.
  6. There isn't a lot of substance to all these rumors, so you just have to wait and see what happens. I wouldn't exclude anybody. Look how the media missed the boat on Pujols and Fielder. Maybe they'll get somebody who isn't on the public radar.
  7. Cherington just said in an interview they view Aviles as a starting SS, as he was in KC before he got hurt. The rumor about them looking for a regular SS is one you have to doubt. I think, though, they have to be concerned about Youks durability at 3B. If Youks goes down, Aviles plays 3B, Iglesias SS. Or maybe Middlebrooks gets called up.
  8. The weakest part of the interview. It's not consistent with what they've been doing. And they do have some incentive to avoid the luxury tax this year, in terms of future tax penalties.
  9. I believe there is a benefit for them to stay under the luxury tax this year, in terms of the tax penalty next year if they go over the luxury tax. I recall Speier of WEEI spelled this out in an article.
  10. I don't know at this point. He wasn't the same prime time pitcher in Philly as he was in Houston. Maybe his back was beginning to bother him even then. He was a no.3-4 starter there. He might be good if his back issues are behind him. You wonder at his age. He's a helluva good competitor--the type you want in a pennant race.
  11. Well, Boras just made an absolute killing with Fielder, thanks to the Detroit owner who is a win-now 83 years young and remembers Prince's dad. You have to wonder why the media missed the boat on the connect here with Cecil and the Detroit market. The Tigers were never mentioned. Same deal with Pujols. The Angels had an extra $100 mil to spend thanks to their new TV contract, and that went under the radar at the Baseball Meetings. So now Boras has Jackson left, a guy he has been overselling while keeping a straight face. He might just pack it in and do a one-year deal with Boston--just for good PR. Or wait for some other team to get suckered long term. I would be surprised if the Sox go up to $10 mil for Jackson. He would have to fit under the cap somehow. I think they're pretty serious about that (for complicated reasons related to next year), though they may still have some flexibility in the numbers which involve Lackey's option and the Papi deal.
  12. Last year, the media went ga-ga over the Red Sox after they signed two big stars. Now they are going ga-ga over this year's big spending teams. It don't mean a thing. The Sox have about the same team this year as last year, except for Pap. And he had an unexpectedly good year last year. They seem to have replaced him adequately. What matters is injuries. That will be the difference between all the top teams. I see those teams as Texas, LAA, NYY,Detroit and Boston. TB is on the fence for me. I think they played over their heads last year.
  13. I don't know if Miami is looking to move Hanley. It wouldn't fit in their marketing picture in Miami. Maybe they might move him for Miggy, but not to Boston. Besides, I doubt the Red Sox are looking for a regular SS. Cafardo says they will go with Punto/Aviles this year, and Nick seems to have a mole in the organization. They dumped salary with Scutaro, and are probably looking to get another pitcher with the savings. They will not go over the cap this year because of the new, tougher cap rules. Why they weren't thinking like this when they offered Ortiz arbitration is a question a lot of people are asking. It doesn't look like they had a strategy for this year at the outset, and have been changing on the fly.
  14. I think he goes back to Japan at the end of his contract. And I doubt he will be much effective before then.
  15. The view I've seen around about Youks is he wasn't able to hold up at 3B, with the abdominal problems he developed. At 33, I doubt he can play a full season at 3B--though it looks right now they are banking on it. My guess is we see Aviles at 3B some, and maybe Iglesias some at SS the 2nd half. It could also be a lesson for the Tigers, who may have thoughts about switching Cabrera back to 3B. I don't think that will happen. Miggy is in worse shape at this point weight-wise than Youks, though he is a good deal younger at 28.
  16. The Tigers and the Jays are getting better. The Angels are better. The Wild card climb is looking tougher in Boston.
  17. Yeah--I was going to mention that in my post. Hanley R. maybe? But wait, maybe Miggy gets traded to Miami for Hanley...
  18. OK. Fielder's dad came up with the Tigers. Maybe they're trying to attract black fans in Detroit the way the Marlins are trying to attract Latin fans in Miami. That makes sense to me. Especially after trading Grandy and having him come up big in NY.But as Billy Martin used to say to Steinbrenner: "George, where am I going to play all those guys?" Maybe Miggy gets traded back to Miami? That might make sense.
