    That other kid what's his name? that got sent down. He looked better, too. Had a great ST. It's very tough for younger players to make this team. They prefer veterans.

    Bailey going down like that has really hurt. They were not ready for a fast replacement. When you throw in the management discord, you have to be concerned.

    Miggy's drive looked like it hit off the first fence, then bounced under it. Then they played it again, and it looked different--the second fence. The camera is far more deceiving than Beckett, who is throwing batting practice to Miggy and Fielder. Nauseating effort.

    Starting on the road is a bummer. That's two years in a row now--against two top teams. Who's making their schedule up--Hank Steinbrenner?

    Announcers interviewing Verlander in the dugout while a batter is up and the game is going on. Camera switches to Verlander. What game? What batter? Wouldn't have happened ten years ago.

    Beckett allowed himself to get distracted by the baserunner in the 1st, pitching to Miggy. Plus he didn't throw his curveball until the next batter, Fielder. Poor pitch selection the first 3 batters--throwing just fastballs. Fister is mixing it up much better.

    Bobby has some fried chicken shipped from his restaurant ready in the clubhouse if they win today. It's a secret. Nobody tell the Globe.

    Looks like about 70% think Bard should be closer. That's what the Globe poll showed, too, as I recall.

    The need right now is for Bard to close. It's a different situation from spring training. I'm sure Bard, being a team player , will be amenable to closing if asked--until Bailey returns. If Bard doesn't close, I think they will take a hit.

    Bailey, the closer, is down. My arithmetic says they are short a closer--or a starter. They are a pitcher short, and they will have to take a hit either way on how they do it--unless they go out and get an Oswalt, or trade for somebody who is better than what they have.

    Sweeney looks better than advertised. Too bad he didn't hit that pitch out. Maybe the local headlines would have been different. There's a negative bias against the Sox right now. They probably deserve it from last year, though two of the main culprits are safely elsewhere. They will have to play themselves out of it.

    No mention in the media that the Sox came back to tie that game yesterday against one of the best closers in baseball--Valverde. Rather the media seems intent on painting the Sox negative until further notice. The fact is Jim Leyland almost blew the game not letting Verlander finish a super effort.

    On this SS discussion, none of those hall of famers could hit a lick their first few years in the majors. They were strictly glove types. The Sox have won two world series lately with two SSs who were mainly glove types. It's a bit tiring to hear about Iglesias .5xx OPS at AAA. A partial season where he was injured part of the time. It's also tiring to hear that Lavarnway needs more seasoning as a catcher. He is now where Salty started last year defensively as a catcher. And a far better hitter. The fact is both these guys are in the minors because the FO wants them in the minors, and it looks like Henry is letting them call the personnel shots--for now. All the stuff you read in the papers is just posturing supporting one side or the other.

    Actually, the best reliever yesterday was Morales. Some people are wondering why he isn't being considered for closer. Maybe the answer is they need him as the specialist. But then why not get another left hander like Hill or Miller for that? Maybe also, they are concerned about his control. This Bobby V vs FO thing on personnel decisions could kill the Red Sox this year. The FO apparently is deciding who starts and who closes. They wouldn't if I were managing the team. The question is how long Bobby V lasts.

    Cafardo tonite says Bard should be the closer. http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2012/04/05/daniel_bard_would_have_been_better_choice_as_red_sox_closer/?page=2 He says Bard should have been the logical choice when Pap left, but Bard wanted to start. Now we know that Nick is tight with Bobby V --and may well be his mouthpiece at the Globe. He implies that Bobby wanted Bard as closer from the getgo. Seems that Bobby and the FO have some disagreements on personnel--and so far the FO is having their way. This does not bode well for the Red Sox.

    Yahoo sports tonite reads "Same old Sox". "Just like last September." These guys are worse than the Globe. The Sox looked just fine today. Heck, Valverde stunk up the place--not the Sox. So what's up with Yahoo sports? They are another one of those NY based media outlets. That explains it.

    There's still a lot of fluidity in the rotation. The closer and the 4th and 5th starters a month from now might be surprising. I think you also want to watch Buchholz. He has to pony up.
