    The offense needs to do something. I really think we need a bat. There's too many issues with keeping a consistent lineup and not producing runs.

    Pissed about the 2 early walks by Lester. He's been pitching a gem otherwise. I learned this early on in my little league career; every walk and error turns into a run.

    Ellsbury's lineup position is intriguing. Shouldn't Tito be putting him in front of guys who knock in RBIs because of his ability to get on base and get into scoring position?

    He's proven he can handle the majors. He just hasn't proven he can handle a full season in the Majors. We're not asking him to give us a full season in the Majors. We're asking him for 2 months, assuming he would be back up in August after a hypothetical Penny trade at the deadline. He gave us 2 months in 2007 and had a pretty good ride. And I think he's much more mentally/physically strong and focused than he was in 2007 and 2008 as well. In the past if he didn't have his best stuff, he got frustrated and blew. Last night he didn't have his best stuff and still seemed to have a pretty good outing. 9 of Penny's 18 starts have been quality starts. It's honestly unreasonable to expect 50% of Buchholz's starts for August and September to be quality starts after he absolutely dominated the hitters at the AAA level and after last night?

    Top tier pitching prospects aren't insurance... Brad Penny was originally signed as insurance. John Smoltz was originally signed as insurance. And I don't get where you get off saying Buchholz blew the chance at the division last year. I'm pretty sure it was the fact that we couldn't beat Tampa Bay and lost the season series to them. He would be starting every 5th day...he wouldn't "blow the division" for us this year.

    You're willing to mention Buchholz's 2008 but you completely ignore Penny's 2008. Penny was 6-9 with an ERA of 6.28 in 2008. He's been better this year but last year his ERA was 10.00 in his 4 starts in the 2nd half of the season. Penny's not as reliable of an option as you seem to think. And I don't see us getting much for Penny..a AAA player likely. I just think going into the stretch run a rotation of Beckett-Lester-Wakefield-Smoltz-Buchholz is much more reliable than Beckett-Lester-Wakefield-Penny-Smoltz with Masterson, Bowden and Matsuzaka ready to go if an injury happens. Not one other team has that depth, yet you're complaining about it.

    Has Penny really been solid today? I would consider Masterson, Bowden and a focused, healthy Dice-K much more solid than Penny. How is that bad insurance especially when it's Clay Buchholz who would be taking the rotation spot? I think you're overrating Penny and his ERA over 5, and WHIP over 1.50 tremendously.

    I'm pretty convinced at this point that Penny is going to be the odd man out. One start doesn't mean everything but it isn't as if this is his only sub-par start. I think Buchholz deserves a chance to provide a spark to the team and be the full-time starter. What more could he have done? Dominate the minor leagues, then give us a good start where he only allows 1 ER in 5.2 innings. What do you want, a no hitter? He's better than Brad Penny and all you have to do is watch them to know that. On another more positive note, aside from Penny's struggles..isn't it really amazing how every year Pedroia finds a way to improve? Look at his on base percentage, it's actually higher this year despite a batting average 21 points lower. His OBP this year is .380 as of this moment after his last walk, compared to .376 last year. I know it's minimal but his walks total is more impressive to me. He had 50 walks all of last season and he already has 42 this season in 72 less games played.

    I'm just curious if you think if the ownership is willing to swallow their pride and put their egos aside to dump Lugo?

    People probably don't realize it but this upcoming week for the front office could be the #1 factor that determines how far we go. There's a lot of decisions to make..and a lot of egos to keep in check..and a major financial decision. Lowell, Lowrie and Buchholz are all scratching to play on the roster. Obviously, you can't have 28 players on the roster. I think Lowell will be the easiest one..just send Bates down and move Youk back to 1st. But this is where it gets funky. The Red Sox have to make a decision with Jed Lowrie ready to come back. You don't put 3 shortstops on the roster. Green has to be either sent the minors or the team has to release Lugo and eat his $9-10 million salary for the next 2 seasons. Will Theo and the ownership swallow their pride and release Lugo, eating his salary? Because no team will trade for him at this point? Also, anybody see them dealing any of the SP and putting Clay in to the rotation for the year?

And then again in 2008 I believe. Not sure about last year but I'm 100% positive about 2007. I know it's a small chance it would happen but if he's been on the DL for blisters 7 or 8 times..you just never know.

    Yeah, it wasn't like he was blowing anybody away but you have to love his potential. Those were 3 AA all-stars he was going up against and he shut them down. I liked the curveball and he didn't really feature his changeup. Once he adds some more muscle, he should see a solid 2-3 increase in his fastball velocity. It worked for Lester. Can't wait for Kelly to be up with us in a few years.
