Victorino is 34 and has been plagued by injuries while with the Sox. Now, after back surgery, the likelihood of him putting up good numbers is diminished. I see him as the 4th outfielder now. If healthy.

Although when the team fails to be competitive early in the season fans stop watching games on tv and share and revenue from advertising may drop off. That is not a good business model.

This team should be built to win every year. What is the sense in playing a season with being an also-ran as the objective? The idea of competition and games is to win. The Sox have all of the resources to put a good, competitive team on the field each and every year. Not to do so is not a business model that should be respected or admired. I do not expect the Sox to win the World Series every year. But I do expect that they construct a team aimed at going to the WS each year. Finishing in last place is never good. It does not matter if it sandwiches a WS title.

Victorino can not be counted on for 5-6 WAR or any regular production at this point. He is one of the big "ifs" on this team. Until he is on the field running hard between the bases, running down and making diving catches, and hitting acceptably, he is just a warm body on the roster. I love watching him play when he is healthy. He is not there now.

Really? Can't that be done by unloading players that are redundant? This team could move any of three or so outfielders plus prospects to build the rotation. Even more if Lester is not signed. I bet the Sox make some kind of splash building the rotation. They would be crazy not to.

That is how I see it, too. Napoli's surgery aside, I think that he will return to form and provide near Gold Glove defense and his usual high OBP / 16-24 HR power. Don't mess with what is not broken just to make the new pieces fit.

The outfield is very crowded and with several players that are question marks. Nava is close to being a constant in that other than his early season slump in 2014, the Sox know exactly what they will get. And he is cheap. If after all the big moves to acquire starting pitching are done and Nava is still around, he will be very good reserve depth.

I believe the perception was that Headley would sign with the Yankees or go elsewhere on a pillow contract. His agents moves are a surprise to me. Still, if the Yankees do want him then he will be in pinstripes in 2015.

I missed the boat on Beltre too. His Texas contract has been a bargain even with the injuries. Oh well.

I'm not going to defend the front office. They don't need me by their side. I just think that baseball is a business. The men who run the business must adjust to market conditions in order to keep their product viable. I see the Sox recent moves as moves they believed were necessary. I may not agree with them but it's their team, not mine.

Good post. I have to wonder if Scherzer will eclipse the offer that he received from the Tigers and if so by how much? I don't really care. But I'd love to see Boras mess this up as he did with Drew. If Scherzer is forced to settle for less than the Detroit offer I will laugh so hard! Probably won't happen but it's fun for me to think about since I don't like Boras, Scherzer, or big dollar contracts. Carry on.

Betts has almost nothing to gain be playing in Pawtucket. Maybe he could hone his outfield skills a bit but that is it. He can flat out hit and get on base. The Sox need that combination very badly. He needs to be in MLB now. I too have been critical of the Sox promoting some prospects too early. In this case it is justified.

Betts needs every day at bats. For the Sox to do less with him now would be very, very stupid. He should lead off under most circumstances. His on-base skills and speed make him the best choice by far.

Lol. I have little doubt that Sandoval will perform well enough for the first two or so years of his deal to keep everyone silent. Who cares that the Sox spent so much on a player that gets it done now? It's later in the deal that I am concerned about. I don't see him becoming a better player and producing more. If anything he may just sustain a level of performance and production consistent with what he has done the past 4 or so years. Will that be enough to justify 5/100? Maybe given the prevailing baseball economics five years from now but I don't see it happening in the context of what had to be spent to get a functional 3rd baseman for the now. I really wonder how Hanley will do in Boston. Of course he has that near insane natural baseball ability. But will he use it to extend himself in learning a new position and help building another winning team? Hey. Maybe so. Maybe he can be the Ortiz successor at DH.

I bet that the Yankees will sign Scherzer or Lester or even both. I can't see the Yankees having total faith in three or four of their starters returning to form / being healthy. Spending a fortune on either or both would seem the Yankee thing to do. Dead money be damned. I can see it now. Certain members of this board will go wild with told you so posts! So get ready! The Yankees are laying in the bushes waiting to pounce.

I guess that this is true. However, I do not believe that he was given a sustained chance to prove otherwise. Certainly not the latitude that Bradley and XB were afforded. It's interesting that about 4 years ago many on this board were wondering when both Lavanway and Middlebrooks were being touted as the can't miss young power hitters in the Sox system and when they would be given a shot at a starting gig. Now both are likely gone having done almost nothing to demonstrate the faith we had in them. Of concern to me is that the Sox are now very thin at catcher. Butler is at best a AAA or maybe AAAA reserve catcher. Swilhart is about one solid year of AAA at bats before he is ready. What do the Sox do? Trade for Navaro or Jaso? Sign Ross to a one year deal????

It was my understanding that Youk was a third baseman that was converted to first. Not that it matters now. I think that he was Gold Glove caliber at both positions. I think that he was probably going to sustain injuries anywhere that he played. His aggressiveness probably made that inevitable.

Nava's platoon splits are probably seen as a legit reason not to view him as a everyday starter. His defense is adequate and even good in some cases like LF in Fenway. He plays that wall very well. I'm a Nava fan.

I'd be more concerned about Sandoval's transition to to the AL in that he will now have to learn about so many new pitchers. But good scouting and coaching should mitigate these difficulties. I hope he has the desire to learn.

Yeah this is how I see it, too. Youk was wildly popular in the Boston area and was seen as one of the boys on the Sox. Short stints in Chicago and in NY should do nothing to diminish his stature in this city. It's not like it was his choice to leave in the first place. Some may see him as a puke. I don't. I'd take 9 Youks any day of the week.
