The Cards lost the game AFTER the Denkinger call, not BECAUSE of it. They lost the series when they couldn't win game 6 or game 7, despite having a lead after Denkinger's call in game 6. That is quite different than an ump's blown call on what would have been the last play of a game.

This is the only instance where we know exactly how a call affected the outcome of a game. That's because the game was over if the proper call was made. So yes, this call should have been reversed. It would set no undue precedent.

The run that scored on Beltre's error was the difference today. Does UZR have a component which measures games lost by fielders?

And to be fair to Boras, he's not the one who forced the Sox to bid $51 million for Dice's rights when the next best offer was in the 30s. (But he did get a sweetheart contract out of them.)

One can compare and contrast any two players, Dipre. It's what we do every day. Is the fact that Arroyo's ERA+ is essentially the same as Beckett's troubling you? Anyway, you're not going to get me to say Arroyo is better than Beckett. On the contrary, I've said several times that of course I'd rather have Beckett. The point was that Arroyo doesn't "suck" and he should not have been traded for a player that does. By a GM you worship.

His bad year was the outlier, not his good ones. Fact is, he was a decent innings eater starter who was traded for a nobody. Bad trade any way you slice it. That trade was one of the things that shaped my opinion of Theo as a major league talent evaluator.

It's called hyperbole. Of course I'd rather have Beckett than Arroyo. But those who think Arroyo "sucks" should put his performance in the proper perspective. He was MUCH better than the guy he was traded for. That's not even debatable.

His numbers didn't change much after he changed leagues. He had a 112 ERA+ with the Sox, a 110 ERA+ with the Reds.

His 86 Quality Starts from 06 to 09 were probably more than any Red Sox pitcher.

Not to mention, gentlemen, that Arroyo's ERA+ in the American League is higher than it is in the NL. He had 112 with the Sox, 110 with the Reds. (Sorry to kill your whole non-argument, but thems the facts.) Of course, the issue isn't really Arroyo, it's the judgment of the GM who traded him for nothing.
