    As for Gedman, his problems started during the 86-87 offseason when he wasn't allowed to sign with the sox until May 1. He struggled to regain his form afterwards and then dealt with injuries off and on for the rest of his career. That offseason really put him behind the 8 ball (thanks owner collusion!).

    Actually, he's shown that he's a true Boras client ever since he left Georgia Tech.

    And what if he has zero interest in "just being a coach?" I just think you can plug him in there for 3 out of 5 games this year and then 1 out of 5 games next year while still enjoying his leadership qualities.

    I'm not sure that Billy Beane is all that worried about it. I'm actually surprised that he hasn't made a run at Dunn too.

    Except that having him around and helping to mentor his younger replacement for two years would be a great idea. Now we just need to actually find that other guy. Bard, Brown, and Kott aren't it. Right now, there isn't a better option than signing Tek.

    i feel like part of my childhood has been validated. while i've been to many great games at fenway (ortiz walk-offs, pedro martinez dominating the Guardians in his heyday), my most cherished memory is of rice's last game at fenway. if only i still had my "pitchers pay the price... when they face jim rice" trash can.

    Except that the A's couldn't even sell out playoff games when they originally had Giambi, Zito, Hudson, et al. The only reason he'd want to win now is to try to make the team a hotter commodity so that it could get out of Oakland sooner.

    Lowe isn't worth 16mil. He wasn't worth resigning in '05, he's not worth it now.

    You can cherry pick stats if you'd like. I just know from what I've seen. Shoulder surgery plus switching leagues plus a high WHIP isn't a player I'd be overly confident on. Also, "stupidly throwing a high amount of fastballs" is what most pitchers (cough cough Brad Penny) are used to throwing in the NL. (Remember, Schill had to develop a changeup when coming here.) He's pretty hard headed and would be reluctant to change. His off speed pitches aren't nearly as good as Beckett's.

    Well, that's the obvious problem. I like Drew, but I think our offense would do much better with Dunn's bat. Unfortunately, neither Bay nor Dunn is as solid in RF as Drew.

    Well, I live in LA and have seen a lot of evidence to prove otherwise. Don't get me wrong, I hope he puts up CY Young numbers. I just don't see it happening. His big problem is that he overthrows and gets himself tired rather quick. He's got decent velocity and movement, but gets knocked around quite a bit. Remember, Josh Beckett had a long adjustment period before he settled in to life in the AL.

    I'm imagining a much higher ERA. No way does he finish a full year under 5.00 in the AL East. The only thing he gives us is depth, but I think I'd rather take my chances with Clay in the back of the rotation.

    Anyone who isn't all that thrilled with Wake's production needs to understand that Penny doesn't offer anything more than Wake. I don't see much upside with Penny. He's cheap, but Wake's cheaper. I'd rather tie up more salary in a longer term deal with someone that you can expect to be more than a 5th/6th starter. Ugh.

    In all honesty, I'd be much more excited for Smoltz and Sheets than Penny. At this point I'd rather have Clay and Wake in the rotation than Brad Penny. Sure, he can grow an awesome beard, but that's about it. Another career ruined by Alissa Milano.

    Actually, I think this would be a great way to go. Even if you ignore Craig Hansen, this seems like a good way to both teach young players to play the style you want them to and scoop up talent that others would not be able to. Plus, since I still cherish the days when my parents bought us Pawsox season tickets, I always get excited when a top prospect is called up.

    I don't know why the Sox could expect much out of a 40+ year old pitcher who had season ending shoulder surgery the year before. There's too many "ifs" for him to be a good bet. Also, there's no way that Sheets would sign a one year deal. It's not going to happen.

    I'm still far from sold on Ben Sheets. His lengthy injury history is too tough for me to ignore. Sure, his pitching repertoire rivals Josh Beckett, but I just can't see Sheets ever being labeled a workhorse. Plus, he's never pitched in the AL or in a big market. At 29, you are what you are, and Sheets is more known for his injuries than anything else. I'd be more comfortable with the Sox making a run at Peavy. The Sox definitely need a catcher and without a solid option there, I don't see us making any sort of playoff run.
