  1. I just think dealing Xander AND Devers is really a death blow to a good portion of the fan base for a few years. IDK. I believe you need to have some consistency from year to year. You need to have a face of the franchise. If they are going to deal both of those guys, it's kinda pathetic. If that's the route they are going, they need multiple rings out of it.
  2. I agree. When it comes to roster crunch time, you cut a guy like Arroyo, before you get rid of a guy like Downs.
  3. Christian Koss born 1/27/98: 335 OBP, 802 OPS in AA Jeter Downs born 7/27/98: 329 OBP, 728 OPS in AAA I'm not sold that Koss has a much higher ceiling than Downs, if any. Koss is probably just an upgrade over a guy like Arauz next season when he's added to the 40.
  4. 10-15 minutes per week is probably too much if the best someone can come up with is trade Xander for Soto.
  5. Where would he play? Downs is at SS. Move Downs to 2B? Have Koss play 2B? Koss is supposedly much better at SS. He is Rule 5 eligible this offseason. May need to get a good look at him.
  6. I needed a good spectral laugh this morning.
  7. And yet this season: His Barrel % is up 2.5%. His Barrel/PA is ups 2.5. His xSLG is up .120. His K% is down 5%. His ERA is up 1 run. His xERA is in the bottom 25% of MLB pitchers. His Whiff% is in the bottom 10% of pitchers. He's getting Barreled in the top 5% of all pitchers. His curveball, fastball, sinker, cutter and slider all have less movement than last season per Statcast. This year he only has one net positive pitch per Run Value, his changeup and it's only thrown 4% of the time. 2022: 1st time through the order: 3.05 ERA, 688 OPS, wOBA 298, BB% 3.7% 2nd time through the order: 5.63 ERA, 835 OPS, wOBA 365, BB% 8.6% 3rd time through the order: 15.43 ERA, 1.083, wOBA 472, BB% 14.3%
  8. Just make Houck the closer and they'll blow less saves.
  9. SP: Whitlock 26.2 K%, 4.34 ERA, 3.36 xFIP Houck 18.8 K%, 4.32 ERA, 4.13 xFIP RP: Whitlock 31.4 K%, 0.93 ERA, 2.80 xFIP Houck 24.7 K%, 3.79 ERA, 3.75 xFIP Whitlock is a better pitcher than Houck. I want my best pitchers throwing the most innings. Starters throw the most innings. I want Whitlock to start.
  10. It's a difficult balancing act, but you just need to figure out who to pay and who to move on from. No, you can't keep everyone.
  11. A 40 man roster full of Jake Diekmans.
  12. And guys like Betts and Devers make money for the club off the field through advertising. As long as they aren't complete dogs by they time they are 32, the contracts are fine.
  13. And it's the day after Memorial Day and the Sox are 10.5 back. Season is basically over. I think hurting the starting rotation by pulling Whitlock is a bigger issue. I think just making Houck the closer fixes that issue.
  14. 2>3>4>1 I think Wacha is the most likely to be traded and JD is a valuable asset for sure. I think Kiké has value at the deadline to a contending team. Not sure they really want to deal Xander. I don't think they trade for a "closer." I bet they make a deal for a reliever who ends up closing, but it's someone we are underwhelmed with.
  15. Houck should be the closer. Whitlock could be a really good starting pitcher which has much more value.
  16. I can't say I trust 42 year old starters all that much. I know someone was on year earlier saying that his arm only had 35 years of mileage or whatever, but he looks all 42 years right now. He's either headed to the pen or they are just going to play out the string with him. I think I'd rather throw Winckowski/Seabold out there every 5th day.
  17. Maybe? We have no idea. If they fail to re-sign Devers, I think fans will be rightfully pissed off no matter who they bring back as a replacement.
  18. If they are re-signing Raffy and Xander and others, let me know.
  19. If the plan to bring Bloom in is long term development, you need to stick with the plan for a long term. You can't vacillate to DD part 2 in a few years just because Henry gets ants in his pants.
  20. Cora clearly pulled a quarter out of their ears at some point. I think the easy fix is put Houck in the closers role and no longer use him as a piggy back. I think they also need to dump 2-3 guys out of their bullpen rotation and add 3 new names. What they are using now just isn't working. That 2 year deal for Diekman looks horrible right now.
  21. Will Henry give Bloom a long enough leash? He didn't stick with Ben for a long time.
  22. Cora can't make a mediocre pitcher throw a better pitch. I don't see how the pen is his fault. He said even said in ST, Frank German looks like someone that could help BOS in 2022 most likely because the guys he has now are horrible. Bloom went the cheap route because he has to strike a financial balance between paying off DD contracts and re-signing guys and working within whatever budget constraints Henry has given him. If he's going cheap just for the sake of going cheap, it's malfeasance. I don't think that's the reason though. I think it's a strategy, but one that isn't really working very well right now.
  23. You need to sign "some" value guys, just not "only" value guys.
  24. SAL played yesterday (off day today for some reason) Mayer returned from wrist injury and went 1-3, 2b, 2 R Baze 2-3, 2B, 3B, 3 RBI Encarnacion 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 4 K
