Fact: A good defense improves a pitching staff's performance. So for a pitching staff to be as effective as it can be, good defense is required.

While it's true that D up the middle is the most important aspect, you'd be retarded to say that strong defense at every position (including 3B and LF) does not have a direct impact on the amount of runs allowed by a baseball team, specially if you consider the type of pitching stff owned by the Red Sox.
