  1. Ehh, no it isn't, really. Giving him a chance to try out with the team commits us to nothing and it would be very easy to simply say "you looked good, but we've got a good team right now and you don't fit in it." The only risk involved in a 15 minute bullpen is that Boyd might do well enough that someone gets intrigued. Other than that it literally costs the team absolutely nothing and gives a valued alum a bit of recognition he seems to feel he needs.
  2. Yep, that one. The guy who also hit 20+ HR's and plays CF. Strikeouts are an out.
  3. Yeah -- mostly because I'm totally bored. I long since gave up on the idea that my opinion had any bearing on the Sox themselves. My speculation is a danger to no one so why take it so personally? I am kinda intrigued about what Boyd might have left in the tank. It's not exactly like there was a ton of mileague on his arm when he got hurt. It probably all comes to nothing, but I just don't see what it hurts to give him a look. Dignity? Please, this is a professional sports team full of undereducated jocks hopped up on testosterone and worse, there's things that go on in that locker room that make the concept of dignity absolutely laughable. This is also Papelbon's team. Dignity? Really?
  4. When Fernandez actually plays poorly enough to deserve replacing (he certainly wasn't the problem the other night!!!!) Or the 2009-2010 season, whichever comes first. This team turns it around when Kessel, Wheeler, Savard and Krejci get back on the horse. Not before.
  5. Just rebutting an incorrect fact, dude. There's no need to get your knickers in a twist over this anyway, it's not like the Sox are even seriously considering this..
  6. Not to mention that if Tek does not come up to snuff, we have some depth options. Dusty Brown is probably better than Jose Molina right now. And the volatile Kottaras could turn out to be a dud, or a stud, depending on how his unusual batting style translates to the big leagues.
  7. Would still rather have Brandon Moss, poor post-trade showing or no. Or better yet, Murphy, since that doesn't suggest I'm regretting the Bay trade (which I absolutely don't). I always prefer to roll the dice on a mediocre young guy rather than a mediocre old guy given the choice. Honestly? I'd rather see Van Every as the emergency 6th OF rather than Wilkerson. At least JVE puts up consistently good minor league numbers. He's a "tweener," not enough power for the corners, not enough speed for CF, but if given half a chance I've always thought he could put a good year together off the bench.
  8. It hasn't been, he pitched in 2005 in an independent league and put up OK numbers.
  9. Afraid it'll work? Seriously, there is *nothing* to lose here.
  10. Except that Johnson was selected in the first round, has above average stuff, and is coming back from TJ -- all reasons why his numbers have a good shot to improve that Chase Wright can't claim. WHIP isn't everything.
  11. It would certainly give people something else to go to Fort Myers and see. For the record -- Boyd was pitching in indy ball as late as '05 so this isn't as preposterous as all that. Pitching in the CanAm league at age 45, he seems to have been flashing a bit of the old Oil Can and finished with a respecctable 3.83 ERA. HE was always a bit of a slop tosser so if he has his command, it could even work. Give him a minor league contract and see what happens. http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/B/Oil-Can-Boyd.shtml
  12. You realize that that matters almost as much as a bucket of dog****
  13. http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/articles/2009/02/15/not_a_good_shot_in_the_arm/?page=full (scroll down) On the one hand...:lol::lol::lol: On the other, why not give him a shot? I don't see there's anything to lose and the team might gain a bit for reaching out to Boyd and letting him show us what he has. He probably doesn't have a prayer, but you never know... you just never know.
  14. Actually I think "Myope" might work better.
  15. And so.... what? What exactly was the point of this exercise? And you just got through a season with a 40 year old nothing baller and replaced him with DL frequent flier and Bartolo Colon, Jr. OMG OMG THE YANKEES HAVE ACEVES WE'RE SKROODD! Seriously, if you want to try to pile and Aceves and Horne, we get to return the favor with Zink and Hansack. If you want to talk about ACTUAL prospects, it's about Buchholz, Bowden, Mastersn, KJohnson vs. Hughes, Kennedy and... who exactly? tell me that when you get rid of Chase Wright. Which marginal replacement parts, it's loaded. You have a whole staff of people in SWB who can throw a baseball in the general direction of home plate, congrats. With actual top prospects? Not so much. What you lack is this thing called a farm system. I hear they're working buying one though.
  16. You mean you've never seen a 5 page thread so full of fail that it should have been stopped 3 pages before it started?
  17. Johnson is a crappy prospect? That's news to me. The numbers aren't dominant but he's a lefty with an above average fastball with a very good chance of being MLB ready within the year. He's overshadowed by Bowden, Buck and the Master but he's a nice prospect in his own right. He'll likely be traded sometime this year for a needed part. If he pitched well in Pawtucket whoever winds up with him is probably going to catapult him straight into the majors and see how he does -- even if it's a team like Anaheim that has a solid rotation he probably goes to the pen. I wouldn't call a lefty with a good fastball and immediate major league utility a crappy prospect by any stretch. Heck, the Yankees would be pretty glad to have them with as much holes, age and question marks they have in their staff right now.
  18. The White Sox and Phillies are also good bets to be in in Huff. I doubt we'd get him. Worth a shot though.
  19. Also one more reason to like Masterson. He gets the idea right off The Master always did strike me as the smart type.
  20. Wouldn't that be an in-division trade? That makes it relatively unlikely. Otherwise it'd be a great idea.
  21. That's why he will, at best, sit on the bench and will probably be in the minors. That's the place for below average players. Next? Speaking of Natale, if he comes back and maintains his AAA form I wouldnt be surprised at all to see him get a look at some point in the season -- behind Carter but possibly ahead of Bailey. If he can defend 1B at all and put up good OBP numbers he's got a shot at making the roster the same way Youkilis did and working up from the bench and then letting his play determine what happens next. Oh, and just to muddy the water even further: Theo should look into Mark Teahen for that 5th OF/corner IF role. He'd literally be perfect and it wouldn't cost that much to get him from the Royals..
  22. We all knew we'd run inti one of these eventually. We're still not getting blown out. Give it time. Once we get Ryder back and some of our lost souls find their game again we'll be fine.
  23. If both Drew and Baldelli are hurt, in all likelihood we've called up someone like Jon Van Every to fill the breach. If we need an in-game replacement, we do have Youkilis and Lugo, both of whom have limited outfield experience.
