  1. Ouch. How the heck do I keep forgetting Wakefield? And I like Wakefield! I think the fact that a Wakefield can exist is hilariously funny.
  2. Not like there's a ton of players from the 2002 Sox left either, or that the 2002 Sox were that much to write home about. We missed the playoffs that year. If we hadn't resigned Tek ALL of the players from 2002 would have been gone. That's.... kinda scary. Also kinda a testament to Duquette's failures of long term planning. 2002 was kind of the death knell year for him IIRC and in the 3-4 Duquette legacy years only Youkilis among all his prospects really made an impact with this team. So glad we actually have a GM who knows how to draft now.
  3. Just as long as we aren't bringing the 05-06 TEAM back. I much prefer the Matsuzaka Era so far.
  4. Wasn't there for that one but reading it now the "I am Clement" scene was masterfully done.
  5. Unfortunately the major sports teams are much too focused on the big shiny dollar and will pass up a thousand pennies to get it. Overcorporatizing the game is penny-wise and pound foolish. We will have a new park someday. Nothing lasts forever. When we do, I hope it isn't glitzed up to the gills and instead we get an elegantly simple ballpark where the whole focus is on the game itself. That's what New England fans are used to and what they will demand.
  6. Actually the Jays' rotation looks to be decent this year. At least everyone who should make it probably belongs in Major League Baseball. And with Marcum and MacGowan coming back at some point waiting for an opening that might not arrive probably isn't anyone's cup of tea. I feel bad for the guy though. He worked very hard for his comeback.
  7. Ibanez really let Gonzalez off the hook there. The 3-1 was well outside and he chased.
  8. WOuld be tragically funny if the Braves pen blows this in the bottom of the 9th. EDIT: Just for the record, several pitches right in the heart of the zone have gone for balls tonight. I guess the umps are in early season form too.
  9. I was for it at the time, but I think in the end we probably did well to steer clear of big signings of older players. This deal is not going to look so good on the other side of it IMHO. EDIT: Pinch hitter. Take your bows, DLowe. Nice start to the year for you.
  10. First game, cold, only a 4 run lead... I can go either way. It really depends on the manager.
  11. 97 thru 8. 4 run lead so not really a blowout. Close one. Think he finishes it? I think you have to let him try, but it's April -- the cold might be a factor.
  12. [McCarver]Derek Lowe is doing what a good sinkerballer does...[/McCarver] Seriously, 89 thru 7, Lowe might go the distance today.
  13. The Sox are a safe enough investment that I have a hard time believing that they couldn't score enough private funding not to be a huge burden on the Massachusetts taxpayer. That said, this certainly would be a tactless time to start building gaudy new ballparks that charge outrageous prices per seat. *ahem*.
  14. Pity there's no way to build a new park while also keeping Fenway operational. I had this fantasy scenario where they build a new ballpark that can seat more people more comfortably but at the same time they schedule a few home games as Fenway games and still play all their playoff games there.
  15. Doesn't follow, and even so you don't throw a guy who's barely played in the NHL in as your starter when you've got a quality alternative sitting there right in front of you. Or did we learn nothing at all from Hannu Toivonen? Also, Auld is not a bad goaltender in his own right and his Boston tenure represents a small sample size THat SOSHer overlooked the return of the bonus cushion. That gives us a lot more breathing space when we're dealking with contracts like Wheeler's and Rask's
  16. We'll see. We know already that even if Thomas is red hot someone else is going to start a few games. I don't honestly see what else the Bruins were supposed to have done here. Thomas is proven in their system and Rask is not. They're in the middle of a playoff run. The move has a certain sense to it. I don't think this will keep us from signing Kessel or Krejci. I've seen some of the math on HFBoards and with the bonus cushion they still have about $9M of cap room this year.
  17. That's a pretty ridiculous thing to think. With the bonus cushion coming back the Thomas-Rask tandem only costs the Bruins about a cap hit of 1.3M more than the Thomas-Fernandez combo. It's more likely to cost us Ward than Rask.
  18. Eventually the Red Sox are either going to have to leave Boston for the suburbs, or leave Boston for some other part of the world. Fenway's plot of land is just insufficient to do much more than they're doing.
  19. If you thought drunken drivers were a problem, imagine 20 million drunken pilots. Personal flight technology has been suppressed until we develop a way to control it properly. I really believe that. Meanwhile, how badly do the scalpers have to skin us before the Sox admit that supply can't keep up with demand and build a bigger ballpark?
  20. You are seriously trying too hard, Diony. Baiting has to have a natural flow to it or it just becomes funny, and not in the good way.
  21. Not vary. Zink's is faster and doesn't move as much. On the other hand, Kottaras has always had a reputation for very soft hands, so I don't think we'll have too many problems. I'm more worried about between Kottaras' weak arm and Wakefield's slow pitches, it'll be easier than ever to steal bases in Wakefield games.
  22. Drew and Baldelli are going to need some help. Both are in situations where they might be on the roster but unable to play. It's inevitable that both will be unavailable at the same time at least a couple times this year. Carter doesn't help there and Kotsay does. That said I really wish we had a Kotsay type that had options. I wonder if maybe Daeges might fit the bill later this year.
  23. Big Papi debuted at 21. A lot of people gain bulk after age 21 very naturally. In fact most people do and the struggle is to avoid doing so Also you'll notice his big head and wide face, which a lot of people actually use as anecdotal evidence of doping, is in fact present in his rookie card and therefore a nonfactor.
