One migha said the same thing about Jon Lester in 07 though. Numbers don't lie, the command is there he's at ~8 strikeouts per 9 innings which is actually better than where Lester lived for the most part. WHIP is good less than a hit per inning is good, the man eats innings, whether he's a 1 or a 2 is ultimately a semantics game. The guy has the stuff to lead a rotation and if he stays heathy we'll be very glad of him
If you're looking for a comp for bello, I think I can feel confident in giving you Mike Mussina. That's a good guy to have in one of the high leverage slots in the rotation. bello misses bats a bit better than the Moose did too.
Kinda reminds me of 06. That one didn't end particularly well either. We went deep into the weeds for starters that year, Kyle Snyder, Kason Gabbard, Kevin Jarvis, Devern Hansack, Julian Tavarez, and those were the relatively successful ones.
I thought so too but I was looking for that guy on big league rosters and I didn't see him. We're actually in the middle of a major generational turnover in the league right now. There are a lot of teams going young with their starting pitching and there's a real deficit of veteran arms in the league right now. It's rather surprising. The only guy on a big contract that I think both can be had, and would be good, is Verlander, and that's assuming the Mets would eat a fair amount of that contract.
Again, I just don't think our chances this year are good enough to be worth a full on rental, even if there was a good one available. I'd rather get a guy with years after this one on his contract.
I think it's a nonstarter but I'd go ahead and at least try to talk the Cardinals out of Jordan Montgomery too. He's got a solid track record, has pitched in the AL East before, and has 1 year remaining before he becomes a UFA. Lugo would be better because of his extensive bullpen experience making him a very interesting swing guy but I'm just looking around at guys who fit my criteria and Montgomery definitely stands out too.
the only reason I think it's a nonstarter is because the Cardinals tend to rarely really feel like they're down and out and so are unlikely to sell a cost controlled SP, they seem to tend to think of themselves as buyers even when things aren't going well.
I have no objection to a non-rental SP. What i don't want is a guy who's done at the end of the year. That's not reflective of what we actually need.
That said, I wouldn't mind going for Seth Lugo from the Padres, who has a cost controlled year after this one, if I thought the Padres were ready to sell. Lugo feels like more or less exactly what we need in terms of quality reliable depth, and he'd be there to supplement Crawford and Bello to try to make a good run next year too.
Good luck with that in this market. I don't think you're going to get a good one without paying an insane price.
This is not The Year. The Year is probably 2025 at this point. 2024 is the earliest reasonable year for major buy in from the FO. This is absolutely not the time to go balls deep, get it chopped off, and have an empty ammo bin for when the real battle starts.
We're in 4th freaking place. We can squabble over a WC spot if we really want to, maybe we get it maybe we don't. This just doesn't seem like a good year to spend our fuel on a stern chase and a forlorn hope. We'll need those pieces for better opportunities down the road a ways.
Playoffs in 2023 is fool's gold. We need to keep our powder dry for better chances in future seasons.
If all you want is .725-.750 with good D, Duran might get you there. But there may be an opportunity to sell high here and it should probably be looked at.
Don't trust him. Guy is BABIP personified. Strikes out in 1/4 of his PAs. Low contact guys aren't gonna hit .319 very often. It's like that one (1) good year that JBJ somehow managed to have. Dude's a fluke, if you can get someone to buy the hype you do.
Oh and JBJ made better contact than Duran does.
If we get another big lead at some point I mighht give him a chance to show which guy is the real Faria, the guy who couldn't find the zone with GPS, or the guy who started attacking the strike zone and missing bats.
And he managed not to blow the whole 11 run lead.
I'll be honest, the stuff isn't bad. If he didn't wait until he'd already let in 3 runs to attack the zone, he might even be good.
