I don't think that hurts us. We do have some space on the 40-man. it just means that the Mets don't get their PTBNL until the offseason and we don't get to add one additional 40-man roster player for September callups. Offhand I can't think of too many players not on the 40-man roster that I'd call up for September anyway..
The Wagner deal was for PTBNL's, I thought that meant he was still with us until it was time for the PTBNL to be cashed in. That means that Carter's role in the deal is officially more rumor than fact. Until Carter's actually named as the PTBNL my understanding is he's on the roster (this leading to situations like a player being his own PTBNL)
Woodward and Traber were DFA not released, cleared waivers and accepted assignment to Pawtucket.
Flyball pitcher. He's not really up to his career average level of performance this year. He leaves it up, as hard as he throws, in that thin atmosphere, hitters are going to dial long distance on him.
Penny wasn't that far removed from a decent stretch of pitching. Personally I wouldn't have minded gambling but I understand why you don't deal a starting pitcher when you are as shallow as we were at the deadline with Wake and Daisuke down.
Well, we couldn't trade him at the deadline because Wake was out and our depth wasn't proving itself at that point. It's not a conincidence that we waited until Wake gave us a strong outing and Tazawa started looking decent before cutting ties with Penny. We needed warm bodies.
Man, that pitch was right in his old wheelhouse. Slider, inner quadrant at the thighs. His inability to pull it out from that part of the plate was a big part of his slump.
