  1. Which is not a small problem if you're going to be pitching in Fenway. Anywho one problem with getting both Washburn and Harden is that it comes back to my original point about already having 4 quality SP's. I don't think either Washburn or Harden is going to be happy about going to the bullpen and I can't see this team going through with a six man rotation just to slake the ego of their #5 starter.
  2. Well, that and he's flat out mediocre in the NL East and Washburn is at least an American League pitcher.
  3. Washburn then. I don't want Brett Myers anywhere near the city of Boston ever again. I'm sure you understand.
  4. Well, assuming you weren't being sarcastic again Mr. I-Want-Rich-Harden, your choice of half decent innings eaters seems to be Jose Contreras, Brett Myers, or Jarrod Washburn. Actually, Washburn might be interesting. He would at least be a competent #5 I think. Since that's all we really need I'm not sure I should rule it out.
  5. They got there because anyone with a smiley on him is a type B free agent, denoted by (B), which BBCode turns into the sunglasses smiley ("B)") And quite honestly? Assuming most of the players with options get those options picked up the list of healthy effective sure thing starters from that selection begins and ends with John Lackey. Meaning if we go for a free agent, our choices are "healthy but ineffective" or "unhealthy but effective." Given the choice, I'd rather gamble that an unhealthy player has a good year than that a player that consistently sucks suddenly doesn't.
  6. OK, but then we have to get back to the point where I'm a tad nervous about Harden's performance in the NL Central. The guy gave up a lot of HR's for a 150 inning pitcher and a 1.34 WHIP is only OK. I know he got better as the season went on but a 4 ERA in that division makes me nervous and I'd love to have a reason why it's a fluke.
  7. I don't think a flier on Bedard limits other options very much. The worst he does is take up a spot on the 40-man, and that only if they can't put him on the 60 day DL.
  8. Felix Doubront is pretty close. If they really had to, they wouldn't be insane to call him up and give him a shot at midseason. But yeah, I agree with your overall point.
  9. When he has problems in two consecutive years you have to at least think about it. Also, a pitcher like Sabathia will never not be ridden hard. Finally, there is a pretty obvious physical reason to suggest Flabby Sabby's stamina is not what it could be and that the extra month on top of the regular season could pose problems for him anyway.
  10. Right, fair enough. Sorry I brought it up. not really trying to stir crap up here which is why I tried to delete the post in the first place.
  11. I disagree with your assessment of the team's offensive talent level. this was oen of the better offensive teams in the league last year and the personnel changes weren't that significant from last year to this. There was a whole lot of underperforming players on the team, but the level of talent is a lot higher than the reality we saw on the field.
  12. That's one of the odd things about changing managers. It's easy to talk about kicking a guy out if you start going into a litany of the guy's faults, but when you start talking about finding a replacement, they all seem to have at least as many warts in the long run. You can't just say "get rid of the guy" because we don't just rid of the manager. We REPLACE him. Meaning that you wind up replacing a sure thing with a wild card. We went through a few years like that in the early 2000's, where each bum was as bad as the last one. that only ended when we got Tito, so I'm reluctant to move on unless it's crystal clear he's totally unfit for duty.
  13. If you know what I edited, you know why. But while we're on the subject, both "better than Tito" managers in this game really made some bonehead decisions. for Gardenhire, taking Kubel out of the game in middle innings, forcing Gomez to take a significant at bat in the bottom of the ninth. For Leyland, obviously the Rodney thing. Also, I agree with example1. With the talent on that Tigers roster the division should never have been this close.
  14. I don't understand bringing Rodney out for a third inning either. It smacks of pushing your luck. Think about it. the guy's ERA is higher than 3. Even with issues like fatigue ignored entirely, if you push him 3 innings, statistically you've got a high chance of surrendering one run.
  15. Anything can happen in the playoffs. ANYTHING. New York probably takes Game 1, but beyond that it's a near total crapshoot.
  16. In other news, Joe Mauer just erased all doubt who the AL MVP is.
  17. What a beautiful baseball game.
  18. We've been in "could be it" territory since the bottom of the ninth at the latest.
  19. Just gave up a hit to carlos Gomez. Definitely getting tired.
  20. How the heck is this game still tied??????

  22. Got the second out. Pretty huge.
