I recently read Moneyball (I know, pretty late to the game there) and it was amazing to me how you can see the genesis of the curse breaking Sox teams as you're reading the books. You see the mentions of John Henry and his interest in stats, the talk of Theo Epstein loving Billy Beane, and of course the contract and then controversy for Beane himself. In many ways, you could read that book and see the relatively simple formula for the Sox to break the curse: Moneyball + Money = 2 World Series. (An oversimplification, I know, but I think still interesting.)

Who is everyone rooting for in the Twins vs. Tigers playoff?

Well, I'm just saying that who knows how valuable game calling is. It could be decently valuable, and then you'd be ignoring a large part of Varitek's value. Care to explain?

Well how do we know what the impact of a good game-caller is on pitchers? Anyone know of an attempt to measure it? What do you mean by "We"?

Who do you guys think should be the Sox starting catcher in the ALDS? I like Varitek for his game-calling, but Martinez obviously has the better bat (especially this year). Or maybe Martinez should play 1st, Youkilis should move to 3rd and Lowell sits. Thoughts?
