  1. I believe the team is still in the family. Until proven otherwise, one Polahd is as good as another.
  2. I don't think Mauer's situation is that different from Adrian Gonzalez or Hanley Ramirez, to be truthful. What differences there are are dependent on the way the teams are built around each player. If any of these players express an earnest desire to re-sign with their team for a reasonable price, we probably aren't getting them. It's only their impending pay raises in a down economy that gives us any hope at all.
  3. Oh boy. Mauer is not going to cost "Bowden and a couple other prospects." We're gonna have to blow Minnesota away. The kid is a hometown hero and a cult favorite in Minnesota. In fact the only way the East Coast teams have a legit shot at him at all is if he becomes too rich for Polahd's blood.
  4. The Yankees are in a comparatively poor position to go after Mauer this offseason, especially if they don't win the world Series I think we have our best advantage in the chase for Mauer if we strike quickly.
  5. They do have a nice catcher prospect of their own, named Jesus Montero, who they seem to be setting up as the next Thurman Munson. I'm not sure they'll be in on Mauer to do anything but muddy the waters. But I might be underestimating their willingness to spend money or overestimating their devotion to Montero (who, should the Yankees sign Mauer, would make one heck of a trade piece, just throwing that out there) But there are also other well-financed teams out there that need catchers too. The Mets spring to mind quickly. If their owner isn't as badly off as the media was reporting, I could see him springing a lot of money for a franchise leader for his leaderless franchise. I think our best bet for Mauer really is trade. there's too many crapshoot elements for me to believe we can safely trust to FA.
  6. He seems like a poor man's Mike Napoli. If he could really be "had for nothing" and the scouts think he'd bounce back it seems like a no-brainer.
  7. We could probably make a move to get his tandem-mate, Chris Snyder. He's hit well in the past.
  8. A few weeks after the last postseason game IIRC. Don't know the exact day.
  9. Not happening, he wants to close. Agreed We control those guys next year.
  10. Even if we could get Felix and a cleanup hitter, unless that cleanup hitter is also a shortstop we still have other priorities to address. I'd rather not have another year of Alex Gonzalez if we don't have to, and there are some good alternatives out there -- if you're willing to spend the resources to get them.
  11. We should do nothing in the way of upgrading other positions until we solve the shortstop question. With average to above average players in every other position shortstop really does represent the most cost effective way to improve this team.
  12. Not really. When the gods were done with him, Ajax might well have been jealous of cockroaches. Aesop: Don't laugh at the people who can decide on a whim you don't need to exist anymore.
  13. You remind me of Ajax of Homeric lore, throwing his survival of the sea in the teeth of the gods just before the ledge he was standing on crumbled and sent him to a watery grave
  14. Maybe something along these lines? EDIT: Yeah better beat the rush.

  16. Like flies on rotten meat.
  17. Plenty of Yankee fans still here for that blessed occasion. This forum really can do without Gom.
  18. Nah, Papelbon is still what he always really was, it's just that some of the air is let out of our impression of him. Very talented pitcher and a franchise caliber closer who had a rough game at literally the worst possible time.
  19. The thing I hate is that we started this off with a brutal game (some might say two games) by the umpires. Losing on our own merits I can take. Having help is another matter
  20. Bit too early I think. Give us a chance to properly grieve first at least.
  21. The whole series was a choke. There's no reason you can give why we shouldn't have been competitive in this series.
