Prototypical roster has 4 bench players -- catcher, backup 1B, backup IF, backup OF. If Saltalamacchia can back up at 1B as well as catcher you can compress those roles and squeeze in another IF/OF.

Unless the Sox use a DH platoon with the aim of keeping Drew and Cameron healthy in the last years of their deals.

I don't think Lowrie's a constant injury risk. He's over the wrist, and while he's been out a ton this last time out he was sidelined with a sickness (mono), not an injury. And before that, it was just basically one big long wrist injury and its attendant complications -- that can happen to anyone. Wrists are tricky. He's coming into his prime years and it's time to see what he can do. He looks like he's healthy at the moment, he deserves benefit of the doubt. If I didn't think Hall and Lowrie could coexist on the roster I wouldn't have started this thread. Just as one factor -- Hall can play third base while Lowrie really has very little exposure there.

There's no reason to bring Buchholz out for the ninth. He's not rocking a shutout and he's at around 110 pitches. Time to bring in a low-echelon pen guy to get him an inning of work.

Bear one thing in mind -- Hall can hit righthanded, for power, and play all 3 outfield spots. Bringing him in if Cameron is either hurt or moved makes sense. It depends on a couple things, but there can definitely be a spot for Hall.

I don't know what you could have asked more of an IF/OF than Hall's provided this year. He's done everything but play catcher, been a gamer, gave his best effort, and was pretty effective. The power is nice, too. If his demands are reasonable, I very much look at Hall as a guy the Sox should re-sign. Could he regress, sure, but he's a guy who can play a lot of roles and I think he should be held onto as a quality 25th man.

I disagree that Martinez will be gone. I overestimated his age when I said what I said on page 1. I think a 3-4 year deal is justifiable and I think the Sox can get a discount.

After 2011, there would be room for all of Kalish, Crawford and Ellsbury in the lineup. This is a non-issue if you're willing to suck it up for one year.

Well, if you want to win, making short-sighted moves that help you one year and hurt you for the next several down the road isn't the best way to do it.

This is all predicated on the idea that we're all so freaking impatient that we can't just wait for their contracts to expire anyway.

The weak OF class may help us as much as hurt us though. Outfielders are hard enough to come by that if Theo decides to move Cameron and/or Drew along, he may have better than normal luck finding a buyer.
