  1. It should be mentioned on their plaques and be part of the discussion every time they're brought up. Honestly, that's punishment enough, we don't need an asterisk as long as half the fanbase has already asterisk'd them. Baseball fans have looooooooong memories.
  2. Well I was one for two. In keeping with the spirit of the exercise, I would like to claim RF Chih-Hsien Chiang. Fairly youngish former second baseman, converted to the OF. Limited experience on defense shows from time to time and his approach needs work, but you can see where effectiveness could come from with this guy, he's got a good swing and if he can refine his approach he could breakout. I don't ever think he'll be a starter here, but if he can put a couple good years together in the upper minors he'll have a big league future somewhere. I'd be willing to take a chance that the kid can improve with reps, and he's only 22 so he's got some time. In terms of darkhorse potential, Chiang is one of our bigger ones right now -- not by any means an established top prospect, but with more than enough tools and talent to become one with the right coaching and a bit of luck.
  3. Did I say "in all of baseball?" Honestly, what I actually say can be ridiculous enough, there's little need to compound that by putting words in my mouth.
  4. This game probably is not going to be played. Earl is going to put a lot of rain and wind in teh way of baseball tonight.
  5. Just as an aside, Ryan Lavanrway's way underrated both here and at SP. I know he's between positions a bit, but that's because his bat is carrying him faster than his glove can keep up -- move him formally to first base instead of repeating the mistake they made with Jon Still and you have a top 5 offensive prospect easily. His bat could probably play in the bigs in a year, whether he gets the chance will come down to whether the FO still thinks he's a catcher (he did a lot of DH'ing this year, not a great sign).
  6. This franchise has never been in a better position to trade for Hanley Ramirez. Just saying. He's never been more expensive for the Marlins, he's never had a worse year, and we've got a lot of guys who are in the "almost but not quite MLB ready" position that FLA likes. I'd like to do it without parting with Kalish, and I think that can be done if we can headline the trade with someone like Iglesias plus Ryan Lavarnway. It'd take more pieces than that of course, but you have to start with those two at least. And then, with Hanley in tow, sign another bat or reinvest in Beltre and we're good.
  7. "No interference from NYY" doesn't mean "no interference." The Cubs are going to be after a 1B and you know there'll be a team or two that do what it take to MAKE room for a guy like Pujols in particular. Put another way, when was the last time THIS front office really went out and spent the money it needed to bring in the best bats in free agency? if the answer is "never" (and it is) then what makes you think that'll change next year?
  8. He needs to correct his mechanical flaws and build up his core strength or it'll just happen again. That's one of the reasons that debuting young isn't a great idea -- young guys aren't as filled out and just don't have that solid core of well-toned muscle that can take major abuse Strasburg whiplashes his arm when he throws, you need a lot of residual strength to endure that and throw as hard as he does. If he comes back stronger it'll be like Jacko said, because he picked up the right habits in rehab that if he'd had 'em all along would never have needed surgery.
  9. By the same token, it's fine to criticizea player performance, but flying off the handle JimEd style is another thing as well.
  10. The sad thing is when the what have you done for me lately crwod throws away 3 good years because off 2 bad months and start saying the player sucks. That's completely bastardy.
  11. Not gonna defend Lackey, but Atchison has actually been about what I expected -- an average arm to round out the bottom of the bullpen. He's not a setup arm, but no one expected him to be one., and his 106 ERA+ suggests he carries his weight. Sometimes fans of a good team set their standards for what makes an adequate player way too high. As a bottom of the bullpen guy, we've had worse than Atchison, and honestly he's a guy who could be in the mix next year depending on how many resources Theo's prepared to spend on middle relief when his setup corps needs retooling.
  12. The right to be mad and express your emotions freely is not carte blanche freedom not to be criticized for the text of those emotions. We all have the right to say stupid crap at the height of emotion. We all have the right to laugh at people who say stupid crap at the height of emotion. These rights are not mutually exclusive.
  13. In other news, Al Gore is considered a potential Presidential candidate.
  14. Mmh. He's got the same mechanical issues that plagued Strasburg. And ayone who throws an 85 MPH slider is asking for ligament damage. Yes I do know that that includes Dan Bard.
  15. Beltre has options if he wants to play on a contender. There's surprisingly few established 3B out there and even many contenders are looking for a good one. I think the bidding war for Beltre will price him out of Boston. Wouldn't mind holding onto him but I don't see it as feasible. As for Ortiz, cut the cord. I know he probably has a couple years of life left in him, but play it safe with the guy and certainly don't sign a 34 year old to the kind of multiyear extension he's going to want. His knees are going to play out on him sometime in the next few years and it's not going to be fun. Martinez I try to keep, but if he won't stay for reasonable money, we have alternatives that don't look bad to me. Frankly I like Saltalamacchia, and I think he's still got a chance to come on strong, and if not, we do have guys like Exposito and Lavarnway coming up the pipe -- limping along with Salty and a Miguel Olivo type for a season or two in the meantime isn't the worst thing ever.
  16. Iglesias would allow Scutaro to start to get whatever done to his neck so he can be healthy next year, and the team might call him up to help make up for the at bats he missed this year with his injury. I could just as easily see the team airing out Yamaico Navarro too. Either way, Scutaro should see rather little time the rest of the year if we're in full next-year mode. Not only is he hurt, but we have 3 other guys we need to give a look at that position.
  17. Lavarnway too. I dunno if he's a catcher or not, but one thing he is is a hitter, and he's danged close -- all the closer if they take the tools of ignorance away from him and make him a 1B/DH. As a hitter alone he's ready sometime next year.
  18. I was cutting down my expectations because of the injury. I don't really think .300/.380/.450 is that ambitious for the kid, but if we get John Valentiin out of him instead of Dustin Pedroia, that'll be enough for me. I honestly don't see where the big hole in Lowrie's game is that has everyone worried. He makes good contact, has a solid eye, very nice gap power with a bit more when he really gets into one, and defensively he has more range, a better arm, and better hands than Scutaro. I don't buy that one wrist injury and the complications that stemmed from that one injury makes him some kind of medical basket case and if nothing else, you have to turn the kid loose at some point to figure out if that's true or not anyway.
  19. He was very talented, he just couldn't find a way to be consistent year in, year out. I do like the guy we got back though. Seems to do enough things right that his chances to crack the 'pen are fairly good and I like pitchers who throw strikes.
  20. Jed Lowrie had Pedroia-like upside before he got hurt. .280/.360/.420 is still far from beyond him and that plus MUCH better defense at short would represent a huge upgrade.
  21. Most of the guys I would have wanted to see called up 4 months ago are already here as injury replacements. It's been one long September since about mid June or so.
  22. I could stand to see Lowrie getting most of the reps at SS from here on out. We know what we have with Scutaro, it's time to see if Jed can do better in full-time play, and finding out if Jed can take several consecutive starts is one of the most productive things we can do with our time when and if we DO fall all the way out of contention. Scutaro is not bad, but if Jed can be a better shortstop, Scutaro's contract should not be the reason he is not allowed to do so.
  23. http://scoutingthesally.com/2010/07/game-report-chris-balcolm-miller-p-colorado-rockies/ Lookin' good.
