  1. Any rotation space that opens up now for any reason is going to be filled in-house with either aceves, Webster, or if they like his progress near the end of the season, de la Rosa. There is no chance that this team as built is going to go bring in a high cost big name mercenary.
  2. I agree. Selling on Doubront would be premature.
  3. ... especially not for a second freaking baseman. I think there are fewer good offensive 2B than SS right now. His position and strong D just magnifies his offensive suggess.
  4. I thought Ciriaco was already effectively gone, to be replaced by Iglesias. In order bring in Iglesias and Callaspo yo need to remove Ciriaco and someone else. Vic and WMB won't be out forever.
  5. I still say that the most we should really consider right now is looking at a short term gap filler or backup 3B with enough pop to prevent the position from becoming a black hole. I think Alberto Callaspo would make an interesting deadline target for that reason. I think he'd make good Middlebrooks insurance while being a guy Middlebrooks can definitely beat for the job when he's ready. I love what Carp's done for us, but I'd replace Carp with Callaspo and call that an upgrade to our team.
  6. I haven't watched Jair Jurrjens pitch in awhile, but unless he's lost a lot of velo in the last few years, that is not a junkballer. Before he started having injury problems he was a borderline 2-3 when healthy.
  7. Never thought I'd type that sentence. Credit where it's due, the man is back to his old self. Solid performance through his first 7 starts with a higher K rate, and a lower WHIP, than he ever managed over a season even in his prime. This is the guy Theo thought he was signing 3 years ago. I figured this was worth breaking out o the main pitching discussion to get some thoughts on how he's done so far. Don't make the mistake of counting on this to continue, but it's worth enjoying while it lasts.
  8. Right now the top guy on my lust list has been and remains one Billy Butler. I know that's not really reasonable right now but there it is. I do note that he would become available the deadline after Ortiz's current deal is up. But that's not what this thread is about.
  9. Huge game by our real third line.
  10. Drew has zero games experience outside the shortstop position in either the major or the minor leagues..
  11. Rubby is in AA still trying to refine his command. He ranks somewhere ahead of Daniel Bard. he's got huge potential, but he has a fair road to travel down before he can get there. And I still think he may wind up joining the rotation in a year and being kept in the minors until he's ready to start games.
  12. No, but he's a very young catcher, so if I had to guess, I'd speculate that he was probably on the raw side with those, and would need the mentorship of an experienced catcher to help him get there from here. I would also speculate that since these are issues that a hardworking catcher can learn, and Vazquez seems to be a hardworking kid, it will be a good bet that he eventually gets there.
  13. The Campbell line is our third line. It's time to recognize this. Also... where on earth did Torey Krug come from and why am I only now hearing of him?
  14. Christian Vazquez is showing some interesting ability in Portland. Only a .767 OPS but a .386 OBP and 48% CS. Like to see a bit more power, obviously, but a catcher who can work the count and has That Arm is eventually going to be in the big leagues.
  15. I'd hit Nava second. Only quibble I have with that order.
  16. Don't look now, but after a tough start to the season, de la Rosa seems to have his form back. Perfect over his last 5 outings (combined 18 innings) although his walk count is still quite high. He's clearly still a work in progress, but it looks like some progress has been verifiably made.
  17. Yes it did.
  18. Welcome back, Playoff Marchand.
  19. One thing sure, I wouldn't trade him straight up for Cody Ross at the moment.
  20. Absolutely. An experiment worth trying but definitely an experiment. Hard to call a player with multiple years experience at the position you're trying him at, an experiment. Other than Maybe Uehara, I don't see your point. Especially since besides Uehara you're trying to compare relief to everyday starters, which is dubious to begin with.
  21. The pity of it is there's nothing to do BUT keep bringing in these retreads, if we're being realistic. That die is cast. My idea, Kenley Jansen, is almost certanily LAD's closer of the future and unavailable for blood or money, so we'll keep leaking prospects and paying three people borderline closer money until we wise up, get lucky, or both.
  22. No they were not. Both players were mid to low cost proven closers who were brought in because they had a track record of success in the closer's role in other divisions. Exactly the kind of guy you want us to keep bringing in. In the aftermath when they fail it's easy to dismiss these guys as not really up to the task, but that's not fair to them and it's not a truthful reflection of the real situation. The real situation is that it's danged hard to close in the AL East. letting someone who'd proven he could get it done on a consistent basis, walk to Philly, has NOT helped us, a team that prides itself on its ability to win consistently, to win consistently.
  23. That's a pretty weak list.
  24. While that's technically true, a large part of that problem is that the list of "adequate replacements" is a lot smaller than Red Sox fans believe it is.
  25. I was fed up with it before it started. I was calling this happening while people were still cavalierly underestimating what they were letting go when they let Paps walk.
