  1. Slav, you don’t do that with a guy who holds the power, has never had a higher value, and has a contract you can not afford. Spending the money on his production isn’t worth it, so keeping him to maybe get a better return costs you money. And if he gets hurt, then you’re left paying a contract that is small market crippling
  2. In this case, he really has to agree to go on the DL. He can’t be DL’d without an injury and if the sox phantom DL him, he’ll be less than pleased. If he thinks he’s healthy and the sox try to DL him to keep his option from vesting, he’ll raise hell. If the sox sign JD and platoon Hanley and Moreland, that’s at least sensical and allows for good defense when Moreland is in there and a good bat vs lefties when Hanley plays. It also allows the sox to avoid the option without any blame
  3. I know all the talk is about Harper and Machado for next year, but I think if we get the type of production Andujar and Torres can provide, I think we might be major players in the rotation. I’d like to see what a Yankees and Dodgers negotiation can get to for Kershaw
  4. Without Kimbrel last year, you were a WC club. All those years during the Yankee dynasty when the Yanks outperformed their pythag, they had one common theme, an elite closer. Kimbrel is the best in the game. If he repeats 2017, then there’s no way he walks. And if he does, you’re screwed. You’ve got literally no internal replacement capable of locking down the late innings. Price isn’t opting out. He’s got a deal that right now still pays him elite market rate. His elbow issue and his 2016 season will dog him. I guess he could opt out if he goes 20-5 with a 3.20ERA, but otherwise I think you’re stuck with him. And the interesting thing is, if Price does do that, then you’re going to want him to opt in! Porcello can be dumped, but at what cost? It’s the same conundrum as Price. If Porcello returns to 2106 glory or even to his tigers days, you won’t want to move him. If he continues to be a homer prone innings eater, you’ll have to eat some cash to move him. Eating cash counts towards your lux tax
  5. I’m just kidding around. Relax slasher. For a fan of a team that won the East last year, you’re really projecting a concerned persona.
  6. He also goes oppo and CF frequently and his line drives to LF might take out cars down below. In Fenway, he would be a monster
  7. Or he’d get hurt and becomes entirely untradeable. There is a reason Jeter came out and said that Stanton will be traded at the outset. The ownership group deemed his contract too much of a liability to keep and too big of a risk to drag out.
  8. I thought option years get added back into the contract as a whole and the AAV is dropped down?
  9. Every contender needs a buffer for the deadline. You might deal JBJ just to have one
  10. Travis and Beeks gets you nothing. I have said before, dealing JBJ straight up will get you a guy like Corbin. Throw in Chavis or Groome, you might get something more.
  11. I wouldn't use the term not very good. I would use the term very green. Your closest pitcher on that list is Shawaryn and he just had half a season at A+ which wasn't entirely dominant. The rest are low A or lower.
  12. He did not get a good deal. He got the best deal he could get. The previous ownership gave GS a no trade. Once you do that, you lose all leverage.
  13. Moreland gives the sox a payroll hit of $207 mil for 2018. If you sign Martinez for $25 mil per year, youre looking at a hit of $232 mil and that doesn't take into account deadline additions. The upper limit penalty is over $239 mil. In other words, unless Nunez wants to get a limited salary (this is his big payday, he doesn't) then he isn't going to be a sox in 2018
  14. MADSTORK, there is absolutely no way the sox will be big players in the 2019 FA frenzy aside from trying to sign their own players. Lets look at committed salaries for 2019 David Price $31 mil Rick Porcello $21.125 mil Pablo Sandoval $18.6 mil Dustin Pedroia $13.75 mil Chris Sale $8.2 mil (for AAV purposes) Mitch Moreland $6.5 mil That's $100 mil tied up right there in those 6 players Lets look at your FA's Craig Kimbrel Drew Pomeranz Joe Kelly 2019 is the final year of: Chris Sale Xander Bogaerts Arb figures for 2019 figure to be massive (assuming reasonable 2018s) Bogaerts figures to be around $12 mil Betts figures to be around $14 mil Bradley figures to be around $10 mil That takes you up to $140 mil or thereabouts. That doesn't even begin to touch the other pen guys who will be arb eligible. It doesn't take into account your catchers. It also doesn't take into account an addition from this year (a la JD Martinez). It also doesn't take into account either re-signing or replacing Pomeranz and Kimbrel, which aint gonna be easy. You figure if the sox just keep the band together, they will be hitting right up against the upper limit of the lux tax penalties and that's just keeping the 2018 band together never mind saving for re-signing Sale and Betts. Long story short, planning for next year's FA market is a fools errand. Enjoy 2018
  15. With two wild cards up for grabs, they shouldn't. You still have an avenue to the postseason!
  16. As an aside, I hope you guys get JD Martinez. I hope it is a humongous contract as well. But I also would love to see a return of NYY-BOS rivalry. It really started to reach high levels last year, but with the lull in competitiveness since 2009 or so with one team being good and other other not so much really cooled down the rivalry. With the sox holding off NYY by 2 games last year, the Yankees nearly making the WS and the Yankees loaded for bear after returning Tanaka and Sabathia and getting Stanton, the sox need to make their move. A sox team from 2017 plus JD Martinez would be a really solid club. I look forward to the fun
  17. DD goes and gets his man. He's the kind of guy who is willing to overpay for prime talent and he does it early. I am certain that Dave is the highest bidder right now. I doubt he gets outbid. With the statements out there, I wouldn't be surprised if the only reason for holding out is to find a job with OF potential. I know Dave has given up talent to get talent. I know he has paid heavily to get talent. But has he traded someone off so the talent would sign with him? That is what I am speculating after reading these "quotes from people familiar with JD's thinking" ie Scott Boras and JD Martinez or his wife
  18. Maybe you deal with the DBacks and get the guy the Yankees had been kicking the tires on in Corbin? I am sure there will be plenty of teams willing to offer useful pitching for JBJ. JBJ alone won't net you an ace, but a serviceable back end guy should well be in reach
  19. Forcing Hanley back into a 1b role might not be in your best interest either. But it might end up being the job going forward. That being said, JD has made inklings over the past few weeks that he wants to play the OF. Right now, the sox don't have an opening. This doesn't change that
  20. I disagree. I think Jeter got as good a deal as he was going to get. Knowing the deals offered from the only other team on his wish list to offer, the NYY offer was far and away the best. If Stanton played, suffered a concussion and missed seasons due to post concussion syndrome, then the Marlins would be eating a contract that will in all likelihood, exceed their entire team salary on an annual basis going forward
  21. Exactly. Nick, you are right on the money here. Hanley's contract ends if he doesn't reach 497 PAs in 2018. Now the union will take the sox to court if they hold Hanley out in the final weeks of September to keep the option from vesting. The best way for the sox to avoid that fiasco is to bring in a platoon mate for Hanley, then they wont have to worry about it. And if Hanley beats the competition and lights the world on fire, then the option vesting isn't a big deal. But the sox have to prepare a platoon partner from the getgo or risk paying $22 mil in 2019 for a DH with declining skills
  22. I am reading that Cash is interested in Corbin still. I hope this is old news and now gone since CC signed. Corbin is a fine back end option, but he is in his final year of control and is essentially a Montgomery clone. We already have Montgomery and we have him for 5 more seasons and at least 2 more years at the minimum. This really doesn't make any sense
  23. Hanley’s option is for $22 mil. You’d save $9 mil
  24. We can roll with this team and be the favorites to win the division. Cashman gets to sit back and wait for anything else. If the Pirates return to NY and want Acevedo and Frazier for Cole then done. If the Pirates want to roll with Cole, then more power to him. If another arm comes available, we can roll there. Otherwise, keep the cabinet stocked and maybe sign a veteran 3b on a non guaranteed contract to compete with Andujar
  25. Also, if JBJ needs to go to convince JD to sign (he didn’t like the RS since their OF was full) then why secure Moreland before dealing JBJ?
