    Our pen is full of guys with massive stuff or solid deception (in the case of Shreve). Hale is just a stop gap, but the pipeline is full of guys capable of dominating the back end. It's crazy that the pen has taken off without two of our best relievers from last season. Warren should be back soon and if Kahnle gets the rest he needs to return to the stuff he had last year, we will have a lights out pen for the long haul. The team is really coming together, even with Stanton being middling and Sanchez really only being a clutch player right now with little to no production on the season

    After the ASB, we have 41 games out of 66 against utterly awful teams. That doesn’t include teams like Minnesota and Seattle who we do play but I anticipate they’ll end up at .500 or better at seasons end. Breaks down like this 66 games total 10 vs TB 4 vs KC 8 vs BAL 6 vs CWS 4 vs TEX 2 vs MIA 4 vs DET 3 vs OAK I expect all of the above teams to be at or near the bottoms of their divisions. If the Yanks can be close come the ASB, then we win the division just due to the utter lack of competition faced afterwards. The gauntlet we are running now is just ridiculous and we are staying strong. In May, we have 17 games against teams likely to be in contention for the playoffs.

    22 consecutive shutout innings vs the defending champs. Let see if Tanaka can keep it going. Great to see Stanton break out. We can’t hit Keuchel, but Stanton can! Go for the series win today vs McCullers

    Hanley was a horrible decision in the OF. He was a poor infielder who never played OF before. Martinez is an OFer. He's changed since he hurt his arm

    German has been good in a relief role yet he is a starter by trade. His stuff is absolutely electric. He should get first crack and I think he may run with it.

    It’s been hurting him for awhile. He feels intermittent soreness and has since college. Yesterday the pain was worse and his velocity was down. There’s something in there. If it’s a chronic problem that doesn’t require anything more than rest, fine, but I’ll plan for the worst and hope for the best

    JD has been the worst defensive regular OFer in baseball over the past 2 seasons. He’s got a great arm, that isn’t the problem. His range sucks, he takes bad routes and anything over his head he is afraid of hitting the wall.

    Well, next man up. German likely slots into the rotation. He was dynamite last night. He deserves the shot. We call up a minor league reliever and go from there. Of the big name kids, Abreu is still in extended working out an injury, Adams has not earned a promotion, Sheffield is inexplicably in AA for some reason and Acevedo is on the shelf with blisters. We could bring up Sheffield if we had to as he is our best pitching prospect and is currently just mowing down AA hitters.

    I just read the transcript from him. Long term recurrent discomfort since college, moreso today and his velo was down. I am clearly concerned that this is UCL, maybe a partial tear that’s been there for a bit. Not good

    That’s not the concern my friend. Keeping Kimbrel if HRam vests his option will be tough. If you go over the final threshold, your first pick goes back 10 spots, even more money is pulled from your INTL slot pool and you lose two picks from the draft. The penalties are absolute season killers from a building perspective. If you do that with your awful system, you’ll end up with some real barren years

    Austin should be back from suspension, relegating walker to the bench. My hope is Walker goes on the DL with a phantom injury when Drury comes back and we give him the ST time he missed. Let him get back to being himself on a rehab assignment. The guy who is wearing his jersey right now isn’t right

    Holt doesn’t do anything well. His versatility kept him around, but Lin is just as versatile and at least provides high level defense when he’s on the field. I haven’t understood the hard on for Holt for awhile. I agree

    You need OF defense this year more than ever. Your infield defense is ugly. Having a rover in CF who makes every play and even the ones 90% of big league OFers don’t make is great. In terms of JBJ’s future utility, the time to deal him is this off season. He’s now 28 yrs old and his best asset is his defense. Hence, his speed and quickness out there adds to his insane instincts. Once he starts to lose a step (see football for when guys lose their speed), his defense will drop a bit and his one off the charts asset won’t be enough to offset his middling offensive potential. It isn’t like JBJ is a burner who could afford to lose a step. Once he loses a step, he’ll be an average CFer or be moved to RF. I think while his highlight reel is filling up in 2018, you hope he hits enough to be relevant and you move him for Pom’s replacement by 2019

    Most title teams had a legit closer. Thing is, there are very few legit closers who last more than a year or two. The guys who have proven to stay elite (like Kimbrel) are very valuable. Guys, we had the best closer of all time. We outperformed our pythag every year with him as closer. In the playoffs, more people have walked on the moon than scored against Mo and he was in the postseason all but two seasons of his career. Kimbrel is an elite closer. He has been for awhile. Long standing, elite closers are imperative for teams to have long standing success. In the playoffs, you need to have a lead to hand to a closer for them to impact the games. For Boston the last two years, they got beaten to a pulp and having vintage circa 2001 Mo wouldn’t have helped your team.

    We faced a pitched at Florida Southern named John Barnett. The kid had enormous stuff (drafted in subsequent year) but no idea where he was throwing it. We faced him and he had command of everything. We were 1 hit and our 1 hit was an infield single. We would eventually eliminate them from the CWS that year, but man was Barnett good that night. Our coach sat us down after and said, “Boys, you were handled tonight. Nothing you can do, a guy with great stuff was just on. Too your cap and get em next time.” I remember that to this day. Today, Morton just handled us. 98 on the black, changeup working and video game breaking ball commanded to both sides of the plate. The only mistake he made was a double to Torres and Hinch pulled him, nearly coughing up the game. If I were Hinch, I’d have had Morton hand the ball directly to Giles. I didn’t know Morton was this good, but he was Cy Young level tonight against a damn good lineup. Tip your cap and hope you don’t get handled by Verlander tomorrow!
