I disagree completely. RJ was expected to be the ace just like Beckett was. The difference is, RJ was supposed to be the ace of right now and Beckett was supposed to be the ace of right now and the future.
The sox had no idea what they were getting out of Schilling and Beckett was their answer to stabilize the rotation. Schilling came back to form and reclaimed the ace spot when Beckett essentially handed it over like a little lamb. At the same time, RJ has pitched rather poorly to his standards this season, but he is turning it on at a major time of need. Beckett, a guy who is from the warm weather both in life and in baseball should be the guy who is surging as the heat increases, instead he is slumping and instead of looking like the future ace of the staff, he looks like an overpaid #5. If you want to talk about a disappointment, both are equally disappointing thus far, but Beckett is showing he is going to continue it while RJ looks like he is reversing it. As for the future, Beckett is the biggest disappointment of them all because he was supposed to be the cog that the future is built around and that is a major ??? right now.
