I agree on the power pitcher part. Thing is, power pitchers who are bullheaded and try to fight through sagging velocity will get massacred as they age. Schilling needs to take a page from Mike Mussina. Mussina was a guy who used to hit mid 90s with nasty location and stuff. He was a finesse/power pitcher who until last yr was going into serious decline. There was a stat about his velocity that when his FB ws over 90mph, his era was in the 2's and when it averaged being under 90mph his ERA was in the 6's. Mussina examined this at the end of 05 and decided, to hell with velocity, he would slow down his offspeed stuff. See, when you start averaging low 90s, your velocity isnt all that important. The thing of biggest importance is the change in velocity from the off speed stuff to the fastball. Jim Kaat always said that when the velocity of your fastball and your offspeed stuff meet, its time to hang em up.
Last night, Schilling's FB was anywhere from 87-94mph with the majority of them being 89-91. His splitty was 82-85. He couldnt really locate the curve and the change never came out. That is not a big enough difference. To go along with that, his location was absolutely pisspoort. If his location doesnt come back to some semblance of his previous self, he will be a bad pitcher this yr. If his location returns but he doesnt do anything to change his stuff, he will be a very inconsistent pitcher this yr, a la Mussina in 2004-2005. A guy who will be untouchable when the heat is 92-94 and very hittable when it isnt.
I'll tell you what, I enjoyed watching fat Curt get slammed as you guys enjoyed watching ARod buttf*** that popup. But this wasnt one bad start, get em next time. This was an aging power pitcher showing signs of his stuff slipping and an uncharacteristic lack of command in and out of the zone. He has a ton of work to do.
EDIT: And Schilling's next start will be on Sunday night baseball in Ranger stadium. We will get to see if he makes necessary adjustment.
